RCAF uniform color

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am building a diorama of a RCAF T-33 at Cold Lake in 1954. I want to position some flight line crew getting the jet ready and need some information on what uniform they would be wearing and what the color would be in that time period. I plan to have a person plugging in the GPU cable under the aircraft and pilots arriving at the aircraft. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom

The pilots would have been wearing steel-grey flying suits. I have some black and white pictures; PM me with your e-mail address and I'll send them to you. I recall my father's flying gear from the late 50s and early 60s - it was a light to medium (steel) grey.

The groundcrew probably would have been wearing dirty white coveralls.

On the T-33, the external power cable plugs in right at the rear of the right wing, slightly above the line of the wing (not underneath the aircraft). I also have a pic of that location that I can send you.

"White" coveralls would be the dominant kit (crisp, new issue white for a VIP visit), ground crews could also be seen in the blue-grey service or battle dress, with or without tunic/blouse, long or short sleeve shirt, t-shirt or no shirt. There is the possiblity of summer tans as well, though I don't remember seeing them here.
