rightwinger26
I decided to start the aircraft tonight. Not bad, I think the cowling is a bit large, but this small, what can you really expect. I'm defiantly not going to paint it tonight, don't even have the right colors mixed for the airbrush. Thanks for looking! Bill
rightwinger26
Just a quick update, the forward superstructure is about three quarters done. The radar array is done, as well as the ladders, I have some railings to install, a little but of scratch work on the mast, and some touch up painting. Tanks for looking Bill
Boomstick
Looks very nice. Clean and sharp.
rightwinger26
So the forward superstructure is complete, all I have left to do is touch up paint. And here is a picture of the Spee's aft gun director. This is one of the things I love about ship modeling. It's a lot of fun during the build to research and learn about the individual ship. For me it differs from aircraft modeling, which I love, for the simple fact that there were thousands of certain aircraft made, but only one ship of its certain kind. There may be numerous ships in a class, but each hull number is unique. Hope anyone that looks enjoys! Bill
rightwinger26
So, I had the AR-196 just about finished, I was actually putting micro-sol on the decals, and while flipping it over to do the bottom of the wings, it slipped out of my hand, and from pure reaction I threw out my other hand to catch it. I ended up breaking both floats off, and smashed all the PE into a tangled mess. After a beer to steady my nerves and some careful work, I straightened out the PE as best I could, and got it all put back together. The PE is still a little tweeted out of shape, but not horrible, and will still look better than no aircraft at all. I through touching it today, tomorrow I'll give it a shot of flat coat and attach it to the catapult. Bill
rightwinger26
Aircraft on board! Next up is going to be tackling the whale boats, barges and captain gig. Thanks for looking! Bill
Sebastijan
great progress! I have a few ships in the pipeline for 2014, but I have never worked with the railings before. Do you have any tips about installing them? I reckon they should be painted first but how to attach them without any glue marks being visible?
rightwinger26
great progress! I have a few ships in the pipeline for 2014, but I have never worked with the railings before. Do you have any tips about installing them? I reckon they should be painted first but how to attach them without any glue marks being visible? Thanks for the nice words, sorry it took so long to reply, I've been out of town. I was a bit intimidated the first few times I worked with PE railings, but it's really quite simple. I do paint them first with my airbrush, they will get marked up due to tweezers and bending, but don't worry about that at first. After I measure and bend the railing to its approximate shape, I tack the first long section in place with watered down white glue (Elmer's). Once I have it where it needs to be, I use the Elmer's mixture to run a bead of glue along the bottom of the rail and left it wick under, it usually takes about 45 minutes for each application to dry. I then do the same for each bent section, working from one end of the piece to the other. The mixture I use is 50% white glue, 50% water! and I mix it in a beer cap with a toothpick. The nice part is the white glue dries clear and flat, so if you have already applied a flat coat, it won't make a difference unlike like CA which dries gloss. rightwinger26
Just a brief update, I know it's been a while. All of the armament is done, the brass barrels make a huge difference. In a little bit I'll be painting them, then attaching the final bits before it's time to add the riggin, so it's close to being done, stay tuned! Bill
rightwinger26
The main and secondary armaments are painted and installed. I can see now in close up pictures there are a few spots I didn't get good coverage with the gray on the barrels, not really evident looking at it in person, but that's ok, there are a lot of small spots on some of the PE I need to touch up. All I have left to do is install the life boats, the stbd crane, and the propellers, and everything from the box will be done, then it's on to the rigging. Thanks for looking! rightwinger26
First off, bad beagle! Next up, the 12 20mm Oerlikons are put together, at least the bottom halfs, four pieces each, I'll start painting them tomorrow. The rest of the guns are two pieces each, the mount and the barrel, since they are black, I'll paint those separate then install them. Almost to the finish line! Thanks for looking, Bill Edited January 15, 2014 by rightwinger26
rightwinger26
Here's the latest update, the 20mm Orelikons are done. They are Master Models, fine little kits, 8 pieces per gun, so a little tedious, but worth it compared to the kits guns. All for now, hopefully the next shots will be in the display case, thanks for looking., Bill
