remove before flight tags

Recommended Posts

does anyone know a good way of making remove before flight tags and the tntake covers you see on many of the jet aircraft. Are there any other things that stationary planes have to make them that bit more interesting?

As far as intake covers I think it looks much better with the intakes uncovered but if you need to make some they aint' that hard to make. I made a form for this F-5E from a spare kit's intakes then Vac-u-formed the covers. They look pretty convincing to me at least.

Hope that helps.

Eduard also do a superb set of Photo Etched RBF tags.

Agreed, I used Eduard RBF flags for the first time last month and they are now my favorite. I expected them to be too thick and they were just right. No folding or gluing, just remove from etch tree and run small wire (phone wire) strand and you are done. This set has a variety of flag text styles so be prepared. I think it has 5 of each style so if you need 6, you will need 2 sets of have one odd ball flag (the oddball is close but slightly different)

Before the Eduard set, I was using decals and putting the decal over a sheet of aluminum foil which is a lot of work.

RBF-Tag's, the story...

Hi guy's, I've just saw this post and have some info which might be of any interrest to all of You.

RBF-Tag's (also called "streamers") come in various sizes. In the past they were made out of thick cotton cloth. Normally they would have the stenceling on both sides in white. Through time not much has changed, however currently there are quite some different variations in use. As mentioned, streamers basically come in two sizes. Furthermore some realy small streamers are being used within the Apache-community (approx. 1,5cm wide & 30cm long).

The Apache has an escape emergency system which enables to crew to blow out the side windows of the helicopter. The ejection-handle for this system (found in both cockpit's on the L/H-side of the instrument panel) are normaly secured with a safety-pin, equiped with these small streamers. Furthermore there is a "common ejection handle", which can be found underneath a cover-panel on the nose of the chopper (right in front of the windscreen). When this handle is secured by means of a safety-pin, the streamer is normaly visible: sticking out from underneath the cover.

Today streamers come in various models. As mentioned there is some difference in size (40cm or 58,5cm long; both 7,5cm wide). Furthermore they are currently made out of some kind of nylon material. They can be either bright red in colour or "dayglow" orange. The bright red ones are often printed with white stencils, while the dayglow orange ones often are printed with black stencils. These streamers are often only printed on one side !!!

A very easy way to make these streamers is to print them out on some very thin paper (just ask for it in a dedicated "office-suply" store, they can help You out). All You need to do is to create a design on Your computer. If You're realy lazy You can also make a scan of the streamer-paper which is enclosed in the Tamiya F-15C (1/32)...!!! Once printed You only need to cut them out. The back of the paper will still be white, however. Here's how to overcome the problem. Cut out some house-hold aluminium strips which have the same dimentions as Your paper print. Paint one side in a matching red colour. One dry, put some varnish on the unpainted side & place Your paper design on it. Leave it all to dry & voila: Problem solved. An additional advantage is that You can "shape" Your streamer in any way You like. (You can leave them hanging from a pylon for instance and "drape" them over a fuel-tank.)

As for intake-covers: house-hold aluminium folie is Your friend once again !!! Just experiment a little with the stuff & You'll be amazed what You can come up with...

Hope to have been of some assistance.

Additional:

In regard to the question if there are any other things to "spruce up" stationary aircraft:

Some suggestion can already been seen on the posted pictures such as the missile seeker-head covers on the sidewinders.

Something else with might be added are "restraint braces". These braces are often placed over hydraulic/pneumatic pistons in order to prevent them from being operated inadvertedly while

line-maintenance is being carried out.

Example: Sometimes You will see an F-15 with it's speed-brake deployed for inspection. In order to prevent it from being closed inadvertedly (or to prevent it from closing under it's weight once pressure is lost after shut-down), You will sometimes see a "restraint brace" places over the piston. Basically this brace is a metal pipe cut in two (lenghtwise). After being placed the two pieces are kept in place by a couple of clamps.

These braces are also used on landinggear actuators etc. As with all things: Check Your refferences...!!!

Also there are formed red plstic covers for such things as the angle of attack indicators (look at the front sides of the F-15), tail mounted pitot tubes as on the F-102 and 106 as well as some flush mounted intakes like on the C-130. There were a couple different types of covers and screens for the F-106 if they were doing engine tests. I have a couple of red remove before flights from when I was in the Air force and they were printed on one side only.
