Dave2
I have 3 images of Coast Guard HH-3 Pelicans my brother took. I've seen both of these as recent as yesterday when I flew into the Janesville FBO for fuel. They are to big to upload but they are really nice. they are 604K, 409K and 384K. I don't know how to resize jpgs. I can e-mail them or maybe someone can tell me how to post images that are large files. Anyway, the two Pelicans were there yesterday and I'm gonna fly back there on Friday to Janesville and take more picks if you want. Cobrahistorian
Dave, Those are really nice shots! I always thought it looked a little odd with the "nipple-nose" but the H-3 really is an incredible helicopter. Should have some more done tonight. I'm thinking that once I get the barbette detailed up, I may see about casting it in resin. It'll be my first casting attempt, so who knows how it'll go. Still, I'll need two additional ones for my HH-3A, so I may just go ahead and do it. I need to see if I can find the TMs (or whatever the Navy and Air Force call their technical manuals) for the sighting system. That's gonna be a pain in the @$$ to build. Cobrahistorian
Quick update. Been working on the cabin windows and other fuselage details tonight. I added the rescue winch and started shaping the intermediate gearbox. Also primed her tonight. I used Modern Desert Sand and she's looking pretty good. That'll give me a nice base to work the SEA Camo from. Edited March 26, 2008 by Cobrahistorian
arkhunter2002
That's looking GREAT Jon! Keep it up. How many rivets did you say there are??? ;) Take care, Austin
zipplex
"I need to see if I can find the TMs (or whatever the Navy and Air Force call their technical manuals) for the sighting system" Good luck on that one Jon she's looking very nice Simon
Cobrahistorian
How many rivets did you say there are??? 47,322. Thanks for the kudos guys. This has been the most fun I've had building in quite a while. The TOW Huey was fun, but it was basically just adding stuff to an existing kit. Actually chopping up not one, but TWO kits and making something out of them has been oddly satisfying. I just ordered the short sponsons for my HH-3A yesterday. Guess what's next! Gonna be nice having two Vietnam combat HH-3s on the shelf. Jon

empeter
Not to mention early UH-1N slicks and gunships. Some interesting pics and background on Black Mariah as well. Great looking model Edited March 28, 2008 by empeter
torchf4
;) Like I said before in another post. Where you find time to do all the stuff you do and still have time to fly and run a musuem I'll never know! You tot of doing a CH-3 conversion master for Chris so the rest of us lesser mortals can finally get our hands on a decent 1/48 model?????

I don't think I could replicate this if I tried, to be honest! I've been working on a couple things for mass production. This one's pure fun and stress relief. Honestly, I'm blessed with a wife who understands the need to relieve stress, and model building is one of my prime outlets for that. With the projects I've got lined up, I'm really getting the creative ideas rolling and I've reached a point where I literally can't build something straight out of the box anymore. In the queue, I've got the following, all in 48th: AH-1G UH-1A AH-1S(MOD) HH-3A UH-1F/P AH-1W/NTS with turned exhausts NUH-1B/TOW (need to finish this one and build a second) ACH-47A Those are the ones on hand right now. I'm also looking for an H-19, 21, 25 and 34 so I can build some of the test birds that tried out various armament configurations. I'm really looking forward to building this H-34: Two .30s, two .50s, two 20mm, and a dozen rockets. Can't beat that with a stick!
marine4 ever
uuugghhh! a 34 with weapons! that's just awesome. and now i'm off to the alameda naval station to visit the USS hornet museum with Rampage55. this is the best part of my vacation. rampage55 took me flying(with leasons) yesterday and now i'm gonna see big carriers. i have 2 8G cards a 4g card and i'm not afraid to use em!!!!! semper fi Dan p.s. jon i need an update fix!!!!!!! Cobrahistorian
Dan, I'll get you a fix over the weekend. Been a weird week here. Right now I'm looking at smoothing the contours on the aft end of the hull. That is the biggest pain in the rear right now. Otherwise, I've gotta do some sanding and some touch up work and she'll be ready for paint. I really need to see about casting a second TAT-102 barbette in resin. Of course, all of the fiddly bit details are going to be added as well. Conduits for the refueling probe, antennas, searchlights, etc. Need to drill a hole in the nose for the landing light. There's still tons to do! I will say, though, that the "Green Hornets" book is going to be one hell of a reference for the rest of this build! Oh, and as far as the Armed 34 goes? The configuration I posted above is just the "medium" loadout. The Heavy consists of 40 2.75" rockets, 20 per side, 4 .50 cals, 2 .30 cals and 2 20mm guns. That's some firepower! Jon The "Green Hornets" history is an amazing book. It is an incredible insight into the history of the unit and the aircraft it has flown. But hey....I may be just a slight bit biased........ Oh, and it is official. You are my hero with this build. Cheers Matt
Cobrahistorian
Hey Matt! Yeah, well, I needed something to go next to my Green Hornets patch in the display case and I don't have the Pave Low conversion stuff just yet. So I figured an HH-3 would fit nicely! By the way, I saw a couple familiar faces in the Green Hornets book. Izzat you in the group shot in A-stan? Well, this Green Hornet thing has gotten me doing lots of research and I'm having quite a lot of fun with it. So, I pulled one of my HH-53 kits out too.... MAN this thing is a beast! Cobrahistorian
No pics yet, but I did quite a bit of work on the H-3 tonight and did some on the H-53. I cut and shaped the cabin door and added the window. It is coming along well and will be shown in the open position, so I'm leaving it off for now. I also worked on the contours of the end of the keel too. Not too bad. The big challenge was adding all of the windows and then filling in around them. I've done all of the windows on the left side and two of the three on the right. It is a royal pain getting each window faired in smoothly, but it is looking good. The last one is going to be the most difficult, since there is a lot of area to fill in. Other'n that, she's just about ready for paint. I do need to get some resin casting supplies. The TAT-102B barbette is done and I'm going to cast 3 more in resin as soon as I figure out how to. I also started on my HH-53C tonight. I've been going back and forth whether or not I should build it as an HH-53C or an RH-53D. I'm leaning towards the C model now, but that could change. I just needed a break from the H-3 for a bit and wanted something fun. I'll see about pics tomorrow. Jon
David Walker
You've really made some amazing progress on this one Jon. Also primed her tonight. I used Modern Desert Sand and she's looking pretty good. Could you tell me who makes that Desert Sand? It looks very close to a color I need for a different project.
