Laurent
Hi guys. Is there a thorough MiG-21 wiki lying somewhere on the web ? If not, I think there's a need for one. It would be helpful to distinguish MiG-21 subversions: various types of MiG-21 SMTs (big spine type 50, "bis spine" type 50, type 50bis), various subversions of MFs (MiG-21-75 and before), who had FLs, who hade PFSs, etc. English-written books aren't really helpful and Russian, Polish, Czech forums aren't... in English. I don't have the know-how to set up such a web page if there's a need to set up one but I could learn... if nothing detailed enough already exists of course. The rigorous knowledge of guys like Pollie, Booga, Piotrek S and others should be centralized somewhere. Laurent
Wege
Yefrem Gordon's book on MiG... (or is it Yefrim...?)
wh1skea
Why limit such a wiki to the MiG-21? Why not include all MiGs?
mingwin
it's a very interresting idea, sadly i'm not the one who'll be able to bring that much to it... as i'm neither an expert in fishbeds...nor in html/webmastering... but i'll definitely spend a lot of time consulting it once it's done! :P Yefrem Gordon's book on MiG... (or is it Yefrim...?) YEFIM (no R) Why limit such a wiki to the MiG-21? Why not include all MiGs? ...because you haven't read the other mig-21 topics... you'd understand that the fishbeds is a wide enough subject!!! (not that it wouldn't be very interresting, or useful! ...but if it have to start somewhere... could be with fishbeds)
Laurent
Yefrem Gordon's book on MiG... (or is it Yefrim...?) Yefim Gordon compiles infos he gathers from articles and from the internet. He obviously cannot be a specialist on every Russian (and Chinese) aircrafts even though publishers and many reviewers present him as so. Many knowledgable are irritated by this situation. The guys who really know the MiG-21 are the ones who developped and maintained the aircraft. I just think that it would be nice to have something that supplements Gordon's FRA book (which is a great book as long as you don't hold everything written in it to be true). In English. Wege
Thanks for that Laurent and Mingwin - I know I was/am rather intrigued reading it. (in English.. my rusky is nyet!)
Booga
His books are good, but would be so much better if only he would stop releasing one new volume every other week and took some more time to proofread them and crosscheck his references. Maybe then he would stop seeing MiG-29s in China etc Edited March 2, 2011 by Booga
Linden Hill
Three words guaranteed to send most Russian aviation photographers/historians into an instant apoplectic rage: Arkhiv Yefim Gordon That having been said, the best book (well, two-volume magazine) he ever lent his name to (along with Vladimir Klimov) was the Krilya Rodiny MiG-21 special (1994). It's a real Soviet-era throwback in terms of paper quality and binding (i.e. awful), but it's the one MiG-21 reference I always return to. It consists mostly of just line drawing profiles of every MiG-21 variant they were able to catalog; 17 different R, M, MF, S, SM, ST versions alone. He regurgitated some of the drawings in the Aerofax and Midland Counties books, but not nearly all of them. I've still yet to figure out how you'd tell the difference between a 'Ye-7MT' and a '21M'.
