jetplane
Here's my 1/144 scale Airfix old Challenger on her final tragic mission STS-51L
K2Pete
This is just gorgeous! I really love the varied colours on the ET and the SRB's, the accurate looking windows on the orbiter, and the overall finish is just a pleasure to look at! Are the cockpit windows your own decals, or what? And the white tiles on the orbiter's side, is it just paint, or are they decals too? Well Done! Pete
crowe-t
George, Excellent work on this build. That paint looks great and I agree with Pete that the windows look very accurate. Mike. Edited September 20, 2011 by crowe-t
MarkD
This model inspired my own 1/72 scale STS-51L. :) One tiny detail is the hatch tile pattern changed a tiny bit for this mission. http://www.axmpaperspacescalemodels.com/images/challast.gif Compare that to how Challenger looked on it's first mission http://www.axmpaperspacescalemodels.com/images/chal1.gif What did you use to get the lighter tones on the main color of the tank? For example http://www.axmpaperspacescalemodels.com/images/stack2a.gif Edited September 20, 2011 by MarkD
jetplane
Thanks a lot guys, To answer the questions regarding this build, here's the details: The decals are custom made and printed a very long time ago by a modeler-friend, white tiles and grey areas are painted not decals. For the ET colors, I used Tamiya acrylics shades mixed with red, desert yellow, beige, white and yellow. Everyone knows its difficult to paint the ET in correct colors and get tone-mixture right, I can't say how to mix, but its trial and testing before you can get it correctly. Try getting photo references and match the color-tones. Hope it helps... George

MarkD
You need to remove the LH2 gaseous press line. That was removed after STS-7.
