ghatherly
Hi, This is a project I was working on when the Recce bug hit late last year. I thought I would post a few pictures of where I was at. It is intended to be a MSIP jet and Chuck McGille's Mig Killer in current form on duty at Kadena Air Base. I do things backwards some times and I started with the Exhaust, which took three tries before I came up with a combo of Flight Path PE, Tamiya, Eduard, and scratch parts that I thought looked right. What I tried to do is use the best of each kit to get the most realistic exhaust I can build. The other pics are of the Cockpit which is a combo of Blackbox, Eduard, Aries, and scratch parts. I need to add Academy to the list of parts used. Canopy frame, I will ad the hooks at the end. Cockpit Thanks for viewing, Gary Edited July 7, 2013 by ghatherly
Ollie 17
All I can say that is really beautiful. Keep up the good work.
chuck540z3
Yeah, looks OK I guess. <_< Just KIDDING Gary! Those nozzles are pure art! BTW, The F-4 slats arrived yesterday in perfect condition. Thanks Bud. Edited March 31, 2012 by chuck540z3
geedubelyer
Very nice work Gary. It's good to see someone else combining the Flighpath and Eduard etches with the kit parts for the jet nozzles. Kudos for having the patience to get them done. I like the work under the canopy decking too. Are the ribs etched parts or did you drill each one out? Whatever you did it looks very effective. I do have a question though if I may? I noticed that you appear to have placed the interior rear view mirrors, grab handles and compass on the windshield framework but I was under the impression that those bits attached to to the canopy frame? Might it be worth checking that before you get too much further along? Anyhoo, I'm eager to see more of this build. A big "Charlie" Eagle is on my wish list eventually :) Cheers,
ghatherly
Thanks for the kind words Guys. You are correct, the mirrors, warning lights, etc are attached to the canopy frame. My picture taking skills are terrible, and the camera I have doesn't quite know where to focus. If you look at the canopy picture and the cockpit picture, you will see I have installed the canopy hoop frame to the base frame as you suggest. I have not installed any of the clear plastic yet. If you look at the canopy frame bottom shot you can see the blurry hoop frame. I will try to take some better pictures later today. The frame is milled out and the braces are made from 1.5 mm plastic channel stock, and every hole is drilled out. All but three of the braces are different lengths and angles. Thanks for the help though, that is why I am posting to make sure I don't miss anything. Gary Edited March 31, 2012 by ghatherly
Marcel111
WOW, the exhausts look breathtaking! Nice to see an F-15C build. Will be following closely. Marcel
rom
hi! impressive work!! bye
ghatherly
Broke down and bought a new camera with image stabilization, So I redid a few of the photos. First the engines: And the seat and cockpit: One thing the camera has shown me is that I need to replace the grab handles on the hoop frame. They look way to thick in the photos. Does anyone have any ideas how to get a good shot of the burner cans?
geedubelyer
Hi Gary, thanks for the explanation on the mirrors and compass. I confess I missed the canopy sat on top of the fuselage so my bad. That is some cracking work on the underside of the canopy decking mate. It looks superb Does anyone have any ideas how to get a good shot of the burner cans? I know in the past that the reason my cameras have failed to snap anything is that I've been in too close or there is n't enough light for the darn things to focus with. Would it help to take the photos from further away and then crop the images down? If it were me, I'd take the photos from a couple of feet away, use flash on the camera and then crop the images down with software to just leave the burner cans in the frame. By moving out you increase the depth of field which might get the interior of the burner can in focus plus using flash will illuminate the insides without burning out everything else. If the flash turns out to be too harsh/bright you can soften the effect by simply holding a piece of tissue paper over the flash. HTH I'm enjoying this so far, keep up the good work. ;) Cheers,

I am going to try to do some work on this bird when I get Recce'd out and need a break. The F-4Recce has to get done as I am doing it as part of the USAFE group build so this one will be spotty until I get that one done. I am to the point with the eagle of adding the rivet and surface details, and that takes some time. Most of the detail is hard to see when painted, just like the real jet, but it is there and these model jets in 1/32 scale just don't look right to me without it. ghatherly
Hi, I have been working on the Eagle and thought I would post an update for anyone interested. The bird has future applied and is ready for decals. The seat, pit, bay 5, Wheel wells, and Landing gear are done. I ended up gutting the rear wheel wells and starting from scratch with the walls and the retract cylinder. I might have it done in a month or two, then back to the Geasel to wrap it up. Thanks all for your interest and stopping by. Gary Edited June 14, 2013 by ghatherly
avn
I really like your built; may I ask how do you mix your dark grey with blue color? Or what brand and code of paint create a bluish color. Thanks
ghatherly
Hi, Thanks for checking out my work. The base is X acrylics 36251, and the blue you refer to is Testors MM 36176. The X acrylics is a gloss and the MM comes out as a flat coat. One thing I like, is that I can apply the MM blue in a spray pattern to simulate the the actual one used when the jet is painted. The picture shown also has two thin coats of future applied with a misting of Windex.. Next time I go to the studio ( garage) I will get the bottle part numbers for you. ghatherly
IT is 99% done. Needs a few scratches on the IFR door and the the wing pylons and stores installed. This is my best to date, but please fire away as I need to get better. Thanks for stopping by, Gary Edited June 28, 2013 by ghatherly

JesniF-16
Amazing attention to detail :thumbsup:/> I would like to replicate what you've done on the MLG bays on my current Mudhen build... Great work! /Jesse
ghatherly
Thanks to all for stopping by and checking out my work, and thanks to Tomcat21 and JesniF-16 for your supportive kind remarks. I hope to have the pylons and missiles done this weeks.
Marcel111
Good to see this almost done! And I'm still in awe of those exhausts Cheers, Marcel
ghatherly
Hi Marcel, Thank you for the kind words. Getting such a nice compliment from you leaves me speechless!. As you know those exhausts are kits by themselves. Watching what you, Chuck, and many others have done is what motivated me to get back into the hobby after 30 years. I have learned a lot, and I hope a can ad a little something in return. Gary
ghatherly
I finally finished the missiles, tanks, and pylons last night, just need to hang them. I played around with my camera setting and ended up wit some better details shots of the engines, landing gear and the skin rivet detail. One item that looks very simple, but took a while to figure out and build is the main wheels and tires. What I ended up doing was cutting the outer wheel off of the Tamiya part and narrowing it up, then attaching a modified revell outer wheel and tire. I am happy with how they turned out, but they were a heck of a lot of work!!. The rails are Flight path PE that come with the engines, and the tanks are the correct shape from the Revell F-4 Kit. Here is a shot up into the front wheel well showing the steering linkage Thanks for looking, Gary Edited July 5, 2013 by ghatherly
chuck540z3
Great work Gary- and I thought MY pics were close-up! Those engine details are still killer.
ghatherly
It is finally done!! To think that a Jet designed 40 years ago, built 35 years ago, newly upgraded with new systems and engines is still the standard the World aspires to equal. It is feared more now than when it was new( Other than by the Raptor which is ours), and with 104 kills to 0 losses, flying three of its many Mig kills ( one a '29) into the ground, pretty much says it all!!! Thanks for stopping by, Gary Edited July 12, 2013 by ghatherly
JesniF-16
Great job Gary :thumbsup:/> You should be very proud! I love those nozzles... I gather that the "rings" are the natural color of the FP PE metal after annealing it :hmmm:/> ? /Jesse
