Videoaviation's 1/32 Resin MJ-1 Early Bomb Loader

Recommended Posts

Most all of the resin parts for Videoaviation's 1/32 MJ-1 (Early - circa Viet Nam) have been cut out, cleaned up and primed with Tamiya Fine White Primer.

Castings are especially nice, although the engine grille work is a tad mushy in spots. Fit is particulary good, with all the pieces in the below mocked-up photo held together strictly by friction fit.

Do note one unexpected oddity - she is a confirmed tail-sitter by virtue of the heavy cab castings. A base or a scale weight Mk. 84 will be needed to prevent future wheelie shows.

Here are a few MJ-1 pics from Vietnam in case you need to see how they looked in the field:

note the body panels were basically sheet metal so any dings or bumps would show up as you can see in the pics.

Looking good, Kevin. Of course you know that since you posted as an "In-Progress", you'll have to finish it ... eventually.

How will you display it - "loaded", empty, part of diorama, etc?

P.S. Nice links, Finn, thanks. Looks like Cam Rahn Bay?

Thanks Gene, and all.

That was part of my motivation in posting......to make sure I follow through to completion. As soon as I get done with the 1:1 body shop, this contraption can then follow suit to paint and decaling. And yes, I definitely want to add a big, beautiful iron bomb up front; I'm thinking a Mk 117.

Those are great photos, Finn, thanks. I think the exposed gun pods are as cool as the Jammer! But regarding the latter, note all the yellow overspray on the tires, pretty common in other photos too. This is one of those true-to-life details that we (or me) often hesitate to duplicate.

I also recall a 1/32 resin MJ-1 from years ago, but thought it was from Verlinden (?). In any event, mine came with only three front lifting forks, so it was set aside only to wind up...who knows where?

More great photos, Jari, thanks!

Lots of variations on fire extinguishers and their locations, including none at all. I have one photo somewhere with a nicely polished brass extinguisher mounted to the right of the dash. I also note the silver painted headlight on your photos above, versus the normal yellow. I've also seen the steering wheels in all yellow, all silver and some in between.

Anyone know how the the gear shift lever works? Seems more of a pull up/push down selector; I'll be looking for a neutral or 'park' position on mine.

Here's a widely shown photo and kinda how I envision the load for my project

The MJ-1 had a standard transmission and yes you pulled up and pushed down to engage a gear. It's been 30 yrs since i last drove the MJ-1 and if i remember correctly it had 3 fwd gears and reverse, each gear the lever was positioned down or up depending on which gear. When picking a weapon off a trailer you'd be in neutral to allow the MJ to move slightly when it took the weight of the weapon but parked you'd leave it in gear so it won't move, even with the park break on. Check some of the early linked pics where the driver is off the MJ-1 to see the position of the gear shift and go with that.

edit: the first 30sec or so of this video that shows an MJ-1 in operation:

If you don't want the standard yellow or green, how about snow camo:

http://media.nara.gov/stillpix/330-cfd/1983/DF-ST-83-00319.jpeg

caption says it's from 1982, plus lack of front brakes, no extended fuel tank or engine cover makes this an MJ-1.

Too cool!

Concur on the MJ-1 call. Is that a Harrier they are bombing-up? In any event, the bird looks like it is carrying the same pattern snow camouflage.

Thanks!!

As Kevin indicated, Videoaviation makes them; looks like the 1/32 is €27. They also have it in 1/72, but not 1/48 <_</>

G'day David,

I knew who the manufacturer was, I didn't know who sold them. I googled Videoaviation after reading Kev's post and went to Videoaviation's website and ordered directly from there, but thanks for the link,

cheers,

Pappy
