SCOUT712
During my research about Crusader squadrons which flew the E version, I came about that Microscale decal sheet I was happy to see another color on the tail than the usual red and yellow. However I am yet to find a color picture confirming blue, since there are also decal sheets and webpages, which propose these markings in red Clicky. Maybe there is somebody put there who could confirm the color of these specific tail markings. Since they seem to be carried only during one or two cruises. southwestforests
The only color photos I know of which are of the real deal show red ... but ... ... NOTE the following one with 0844 / 111's serial number painted differently at base of fin than as done in decal set. Which raises the question of potential color changes during maintenance or a repaint. https://theaviationgeekclub.com/talk-to-me-im-scared-us-navy-f-8-crusader-pilot-recalls-when-the-lso-couldnt-talk-to-him-during-a-night-carrier-landing/ Photo caption, Quote A trio of VF-13 Crusaders, painted with the broad red stripe on the tail. The design changed approximately 1966 to a thinner stripe.
Tailspin Turtle
It is likely that it was red, not blue, because the standard trim color for the 1XX numbered squadron in the air group was red.
phantom
I did a VF-13 with AJ tail codes around 10 years ago. All markings are red. Stars on the red were white.
Mr.Happy
Michael, If this helps? The Steve Ginter book (Navel Fighters Number Four Part Four Vought F-8 Crusader Navy Fighter Squadrons) indicates that the E model Crusaders of VF-13 had Red Squadron markings. Super Decals are good but sometimes they weren’t always the best on research on colors. This is not to say they are bad but I alway take their inspirations with a grain of salt and do some followup research. I know that there was a nice Aeromaster Decals sheet # 48-568 Colorful Crusaders Part VII with a VF-13 F-8E with the Red squadron trim. Again I hope this helps, Mr. Happy
