I posted this in "Real Aviation" but thought I'd add it here too. sundowner posted this photo a few days ago and it didn't get much notice, but I've found myself more and more curious about it. Does NSAWC have many of these, and what is their role? Are they strictly for support or are they used as adversaries? It's certainly an attractive scheme for an SH-60. Thanks for any information, and if there are any more photos of these helicopters floating around I'd love to see them.

They play the role of red air helicopters (e.g. Hind et al) during CSAR events. Also used in conjunction with the SWTI (Seahawk Weapons and Tactics Instructor) Course - their equivalent of TOPGUN - and, if I'm not mistaken, the Mountain Flying Course.

If I recall correctly, they also have an all black one and a desert cammo one (much like the F-18s). BUT.....I have been known to be wrong.

Still a nice looking bird though. Thanks for sharing the pic.

Cheers

That look kinda like FS34079 to anyone else, or is it just me?
The green one? I don't think so, not dark enough to be -79. I find it closer to 34102 or 34095 perhaps.

Ok, you guys are REALLY starting to scare me. I mean, who memorizes FS numbers. LOL

WELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL....all of them, forget it. But a few key ones do stick out to be readily recognized...36440, for example, is the gull gray for USN planes I've been using for 20 yrs now. 34079 is easily identified as dark green used on every single SEA and Euro I scheme ever done. And the modern Tomcat/USN folks often have the three colors of the TPS memorized. Beyond that I have no clue. Except 20400 Tan. :crying:

The other colors I quoted simply b/c I was able to walk 4 feet from my computer and pick up the bottles to check. :D

I figured it was something like that. You guys just amaze me sometimes with what knowledge you have gathered over the years. Maybe one day I can learn.....................ok, probably not, but it sounded good.

Hmm...if one is in a bind, I suspect it could be neatly "fudged" with spare decals including the old Topgun badge (identical to the NSAWC except the lightning, I think...)

The NSAWC logo you see there, and still used on both our Vipers and Hornets, is just a combination of the TOPGUN patch and the lightning flash from STRIKE U (the two main predecessors of NSAWC).

You could certainly use that for some of these helicopters.

Not too long ago (I'm not sure when - I'll try to remember to ask around to find out) the NSAWC helos replaced the TOPGUN patch with the SWTI logo. They still have the lightning thingie though, if memory serves. Like I said, it wasn't TOO long ago, so you could use the fighter weapons school emblem and still be accurate for everything except very recent times.

Yeah, I thought it might get a bit more traffic over here. Nice photo. There's one other of that helicopter on the first page of this thread. And I'd really like to see the rest of your photos when you track them down.
