I remembered to share, some WIP of the Eduard Emil. There are so many guys out there building one, I felt myself compelled to built my copy too

After a long battle everything stays together in place and also without glue

Well, after the first week, there's a shape of Emil appearing! :)

bf109E1_27.JPG

But still so many cables and wires, pipes, labels! Heck! So many tasks still to do around the DB-601

bf109E1_28.JPG

Apart from the usual wiring and labels, the only thing I added so far was a Magic Sculpt cushion. Saw so many formats, just liked this one:

Sure enhaces the pit a little bit. Now it's time to wire all that engine mount!

Happy weekend to you all, guys! Cheers!

Nice work so far Nuno! Can you show some photos of the inside of your cowling (to see how much you had to sand)? Also, not sure that the engine had the top and mounts in silver, I beleive it is all black there  Cushion looks very nice indeed!

Cheers,

Doug

Hi Doug! Thanks for your words!

I saw restored birds, and several of them in fact, with all black engines. On the other hand, period time pictures show the cover and mounts in bare metal. So I decided to go that way :) Adds a little more interest (in my own opinion, that is)

The cowl is, in some places, as thin as paper! :crying2: I'll try to take tomorrow some photos from the inside. I still have to polish that damn thing! For now it's only sanded. But I was tired

Hey Nuno,

Looking good! I really like that pit weathering - your off to a great start!

I really hope you explain how you managed to get those cowlings to fit without removing the engine bearers or modifying the guns any!

Regards,

Frank

Guys! Thank you all for the kind words! As we had around here a great sunny weekend I spent two days by the see, only returned yesterday.

Tonight I took a shot while giving the final polish to the inside of the cowling:

bf109E1_32.JPG

Right side is almost done, still the left side to polish. Isn't it thin or not? :coolio: What scares me is that I still have to drill twelve holes in the front ARC of the cowling!!! :) :)

BTW any of you guys have photographs of this cowling upside down? How is it on the inside? I only located so far a photograph of the gun cover, but no one about the cowling

Time to wire things now! :)

Thank you folks! Really thanks for you support.

Time for a very brief update. Not to be confused with the Yellow Submarine legend ... but almost

Still need to polish that damn propeller! Why but really why the hack do I use extreme zoom in the photos! Have to repair every damn part I shot :coolio:

Hey Nuno,

looks great so far! I love the holes you added to the front of the cowling! Very very nice.

I can't wait to see the finished bird , that is very cool how you got the engine cover to fit over the engine - I salute you on that one.

Looking forward to more!

Regards,

Frank

Thank you guys!

As I received several feedback regarding the Supercharger intake, I decided to post how I upgraded the part - Probably the weakest of all Eduard kit.

So, I rescribed it:

bf109E1_36_.jpg

Ten damn vanes in such a small area :) Well it's over now! Still need to frame those vanes with styrene, but the fact is that with a good scribber and a steady hand you too can easilly improve this highly visible part. Trust me! :)

Very nice work. Is this one gonna be in the markings of the "Abbeyville boys"?, Or as the Allied bomber kids called them the "yellow nosed b@st*rds.

Thank you Angels49!

I will make the first option of this decal sheet:

EC121-cover_1.gif

Book strike in the Balcans has a complete page dedicated to this aircraft. Lynn also supplied me an excellent photograph.

Turning to the kit again, if I may pass the warning to all you guys out there, wherever you thin the cowl or not, you really need to put the engine in the kit. Or at least "chopped portions" of the engine, if thinning the inside of the cowl is not a good mood

bf109E1_37_.JPG

I say this because now that things are beginning to get painted, the engine is stunningly visible through the two frontal vents. Especially in a highly contrasting yellow cowl.

It is visible in the photograph that the machine guns are still not installed. I am truly anxious to place them. Ordered two Air Master MG17 in the beginning of March but still nothing arrived here.

I am getting tired of wires

Many thanks to you all guys!

Continuing the saga, basic engine is done now. I ordered a couple of Air Master barrels in the beginning of this month but so far I am still waiting (really hate websites that show products they don’t have… Better move along and forget for now the barrels ... I'm really upset with this!)

So I used the kit MG-17’s from the kit. The rest are wires, strip and books in my lap to assist me:

bf109E1_38_.JPG

bf109E1_39_.JPG

Gun covers still to be added. These two will surely the last two parts to add to the model.

Shakespeare once wrote "To be or not to be, that is the question" Somehow I place myself the same interrogation “To weather or not to weather the engineâ€

Damn, the engine in this photograph bellow is really dirty. Shall I put my model like this or not? Please give me feedback guys!

While gathering opinions, it is now time to do the worst nightmare of this kit: The gun cover – The real one is a single part. The kit has it moulded in three parts, two of them are thick walls. And, to allow the engine and guns to be visible, I put the three parts as thin as paper.

Time now to blend them to create a credible very single part. Wish me luck!

Hey Nuno!

The wiring looks awesome! I wish you the best in getting those covers on - I know that won't be easy.

The lettering on the engine is very cool - as far as weathering, I like to weather, but I would suggest you build it the way you want it to look! One thing to consider.. You are doing a yellow nosed version - that means this beast will have seen much action (and a few engine changes for sure). So even if you weather it the engine might not look all that bad - but certainly the bay would be filthy dirty.

But whatever you decide I'm sure it will look great! Again - the wiring looks very sharp and adds a lot of realisim!

I love it!

Frank

Hey Frank! Thank you! Thank you too for the cowling mistery solution!

May I place another question how is the Hub face that contacts with the fuselage? How does it looks?

Hope this is understandable, but if you open the cowl and look forward you see the propeller. Question is: How does the hub looks when you observe it from this angle? Is it plain (Eduard kit part is) or not?

The cowl front has holes everywhere, the hub where it contacts the propeller too. So I fear that the aft part of the hub is not plain too. It is highly visible with the cowling removed.

Do you guys have any image to share?

THANKS!

Time to do a small update

Gun cover: Three parts blended in to a single component. Ain't easy, but worth it.

bf109E1_46_.JPG

Wheel wells canvas sculpted with lead foil. Zippers still to be added.

bf109E1_44_.JPG

Zippers under work:

bf109E1_42_.JPG

Fixing some issues across the airframe. This was one of them:

bf109E1_43_.JPG

Underwing basic paint

Top fuselage/wings: RLM 02 and RLM 65 in place. Gun cover removed:

Gun cover added:

Basic coat of RLM 71 in place

Back to the bench. Time to undertone and highlight all colors. Blending still to be done.

Have a great weekend guys!
