  3. That absolutely helps, one of those tips that I copy/paste into my growing "how too" files! Thank you so much. My first resin kit I bought, was a AH-6J CMK 1:48 conversion. When the kit arrived and I opened it up, my heart sank, I had no clue what I was even looking at. There are tiny antenna and pitot tubes I think, but I was not sure what were parts and what was scrap. That terrified me, so I gently put it back in the box and began trying to find out all the information I can. I haven't built a kit in thirty years, and choosing to convert to kits with resin/PE as my welcome back

  5. Hmmmm, never heard of a retired Marine, didn't know they allowed that! My old roommate would be turning red at the mere thought of being anything other than just "a Marine". As I was army, we had a lot of good banter back and forth. It's really cool what you are doing, I saw the picture you posted of "a few more", I don't think there is any left! I also have the KH version in my stash, but I have to say, my eyes lit up when I saw the Academy pictures. So like the rotor head I am becoming, I looked at the first reviews. I was just doing a search to see if anyone had reviewed this kit, and just to be sure, you're building the Academy AH-1Z Sharkmouth 1:35 kit? I read a review from Korea that you might want to take a peek at, it is the most thorough review I have ever seen, with detailed pictures of the actual airframe the kit is modeled from.   12. Now that is cool! My next question is this. If someone wanted to replicate this airframe as pictured, do you have other photos, with nose-art and other markings? May have to hook up with Floyd on this thread, since he was an AH-1 driver, maybe some resin chunkers in our future, if they don't already exist that is.   14. I had forgotten about the forcing the round off the bolt face using the rod, that was even creamier to me than firing the "ghost" round. That guy was LUCKY, imagine having to go to your CSM and explain why their is a helo with a missing tail boom, because you "accidentally" blew it off with the 19. Sounds like he was a few meters away from becoming LEGEND! TFYS!

  16. I think "that guy" covered it pretty well, but my post was more about the round than the mechanism that fired it. I know that there are differences between the rounds, like the Mk19 can't fire the M203 and visa versa, never asked why, didn't really care at the time, I just knew that I enjoyed the 19 way more than the 203. Back then, we only had access to the most common type of 203, which was underbarrel M16 varient, not something I would have ever wanted to lug around with me. I was more than happy to carry my M4 with M68 aimpoint on the 14.5 inch fluted H-bar. This was before the Army decide
  17. I for one, can't remember the velocity, but I do remember this much. With a point target accuracy of 800 meters (if my memory serves) and an area target of 1800 meters (my memory is hazy, and I am sure I will be corrected if wrong) and an overall range of 2000 plus meters, the velocity has to be pretty quick. The size of the round is probably deceptive, since you can see it, you think it's moving slower than it actually is. Similar to when gunning the 25mm Bushmaster, even through the sights, I was able to see the rounds following the firing solutions path to their target, rising up then falli
  18. Forgot to add, 5 meter kill, 15 meter wound! We all know that one wounded man equals three out of the fight, we are talking about wounded carrying the wounded carrying the wounded, it's wounded to the power of..... WOUNDED! I almost feel bad for those guys in the 6-10 meters, but living is better than dying I guess. If you are going to be sub 5, might as well be inches, no way you want to hear or feel what that round is about to do to you.
  19. This is exactly what I was thinking. There are very few weapons systems that allows you to see the round from muzzle to hit, all the way thru to arc (no pun intended), a good gunner, meaning one that fired the weapon constantly and knows the trajectory of the rounds, would have no trouble putting them home, after a few, three, shots at most. It is different certainly in the air, as the target may remain stable, but you are moving your azz off. Again, a good gunner would still learn to lead targets, or in this case, fire short and allow the lateral movement to carry the rounds where he wanted.

  21. This is the same method used to differentiate the AH-6j's models, along with different kit numbers as well. Just need to be careful and know what you are buying. If the price seems exceptionally good, it probably doesn't include figures. I impulse bought once already, and it bit me in the rear, finding out my F-15E was really only a demonstration kit and not the real McCoy, was a kick in the gut. Anthony

I forgot to mention this, if you want to see weathering on black aircraft, you should do a search on this site, and then others like britmodeler or armarama I think it is, then search for Blackhawk helicopters, specific terms like SOAR, DAP, MH-60 and AH-6J, all these birds are black, with lots of weathering techniques offered. If the build lot doesn't explain it good enough, as the builder what they did, I am sure that they will be more than happy to share their methods.   23. WOW, would you look at that! Now that is what I'm talking about! I would guess that the little stubby barrel would slow the already seemingly slow 40mm to near "catch it in the air" speeds. I recall very well the "ka-chunk" sound of the Mk19's, which really surprised me, I thought it would be much louder. This little baby probably has bit more report from the shortened barrel, but being in a help, any increase in sound is likely drown out by the engines anyway.
