lmn052
Is there away to remove the chrome off chrome parts? thanks Ian
dnl42
Coke will remove the chrome. BUT, you also need to remove a clear coat, which the Coke was no match for. Had to use Simple Green for that. If there's a next time, I'll use it right away.
admiralcag
You can use Simple Green, but it can take a while. If you are impatient, like me, use Purple Power/Castrol Super Clean. White vinegar can also strip chrome if there is no clear coat. Vern
Grey Ghost 531
spray oven cleaner works pretty fast. Put the parts in a zip lock and spray the inside. Let it sit for a half hour, rinse, scrub with a tooth brush.
lmn052
Thanks for the help everyone ian
skyhawk174
If the chrome parts are from a standard kit you could try household bleach. Works like a charm and not as bad as oven cleaner. Have some of that Castrol Super Clean but have not used it as yet since the bleach works for me.
320 Driver
FWIW a $7 gallon of purple power seems to work better than anything for chrome. Dipped some models in it, and though the old paint didn't come off easily the chrome went bye-bye
caudleryan
If you have a Dollar General near you, they have something called Totally Awesome! Found with the cleaning chemicals. I use this stuff all the time and it's pretty good at stripping chrome as well as the clearcoat. I have only been able to find it at dollar general, though. Also works well stripping paint. viper730
anything with ammonia should work. I soaked a silver plated p-47 in some knock off windex glass cleaner and within a few hours it was good to go. I got my bottle for $1 at a dollar tree store it was a maybe a 28oz bottle so apx. $5 a gallon
route62us
Do you need to remove the chrome? If I am going for a different color, I just clean up the part, prime and spray the new color.
dnl42
The clearcoat below the chrome plating is usually excessively thick, softening detail.
route62us
All the above suggestions are good choices. Depending on the manufacture of the kit, not all products mentioned will strip the underlying clear. you may have to experiment there.
Emvar
Bleach works......
