space shuttle stack accurate flight deck question
Hotdog replied to Homer's topic in Real Space Modeling
That's looking really really good! PM sent. -
Not yet, I have not worked on them in a long time. I was developing them for the Airfix shuttle so they wouldn't fit the Revell shuttle anyway. One day I'll get back around to it, and maybe do a Revell set also, but I don't expect it anytime soon. I do have the markings, if you're interested in those.

Space Shuttle Launch Pad 39A with Challenger STS-6 (1:144)

Those thermal curtains are turning out great, Manfred! Your hard work on that is paying off! -
For the best decals, get the Space Model Systems decals from the CultTVMan website. They are far better and more complete than either of the kit offerings.

I am currently building this kit. I'll be posting some pics soon of the build-up. Overall it's a very nice kit, better than the other offerings at 1/200 scale. The orbiter is very nicely detailed and has a good shape to it. I like that the windows are glued on from the outside, so you can save that step until after painting. The orbiter parts of the kit are molded in both white and black plastic, which is nice for the novice modeler who doesn't plan on doing much painting. For the rest of us, it requires that we prime the orbiter in a neutral gray first, and cover it wi

Good work! There are photo-etch HUD sets already available for jet fighter model builders, perhaps you could source them. https://www.ebay.ie/itm/Model-Technologies-1-72-Martin-Baker-Ejection-Handles-w-F-15-Hud-Set-MT0015/121539716869?hash=item1c4c54e705:g:hm8AAOSwg8taITzg -
Space Shuttle Launch Pad 39A with Challenger STS-6 (1:144)

I can tell you that Shapeways Frosted Extreme Detail is so smooth that you will probably not want to do anything to it. However, it's very expensive. Frosted Ultra Detail will leave some frosting texture on one side of the print, which is very annoying. White Strong & Flexible is rough, but can be smoothed with Smooth-On compound and filler primers. -

I've only seen those gray covers when the shuttle is being moved and processed. Once on the pad and ready for launch, it has these white paper covers that peel off during ascent. -

Looking fantastic so far! Love the new tile work! Don't forget the tiles in the window frames. I may have omitted them in my original tile drawing. -

Hi Manfred, The photo is from George's Rocket pages which is an old website from the late 90s/early 2000s. Apparently the seams of the ASTC segments were still being covered with the silver foil insulation at the time he published his page. It's likely the early missions like STS-6 looked like this. -

Hi Manfred, Here is a useful document about the SRB thermal curtains. There is a nice diagram showing the 24 segments. https://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/19940012651.pdf Some other graphics you may find useful, from George's Rockets: -
Glad to see you getting back to this one!

Here's a link to the photos, since Photobucket kicked the bucket: https://imgur.com/a/S9Xze

Glad you like them and that they arrived safely! You are first to try out the set of markings for the orbiters. Looking forward to seeing how they turn out.

The kit engines turn out pretty good, just use some wire to add more accurate tubing to the nozzles.

I plan to (someday!) get another Tamiya shuttle kit and redo the windows. My idea for that involves filling in the entire window area with either styrene or putty, smoothing it all out, and then drilling and sanding out each window frame to shape. Then I'd use pieces of clear styrene sheet for the window glass. As for the engines, you might ask niart17 if he will scale down his 3D-printed 1/72 SSME's to 1/100 scale.

Question about Gold Foil (Survival Blanket)
Hotdog replied to crackerjazz's topic in Real Space Modeling
Here are some notes I had saved from one of the LM modeler experts (I can't remember where I got this): https://www.candylandcrafts.com/Extra_Thin_Confectioners_Foils.htm Gold matches 0.5 mil Kapton Orange matches 2 mil Kapton Burgundy matches 5 mil Kapton Silver matches the nickel foils. Black matches the Pyromark (though it will need a flat coat to knock down the shine). -
space shuttle stack accurate flight deck question
Hotdog replied to Homer's topic in Real Space Modeling
Yes, the tile sheet I made for the belly of the Monogram orbiter was a success. The next step is to draw out the tiles for the rest of the surfaces to fit the model (I have them all drawn out, I just need to make them fit). Lighting up the ceiling panels will be interesting. You'll need to paint the inside plastic of the kit Flat Black to keep the bright LED lights from shining through to the exterior. You may need to give it 2-3 coats! As always, test it out before gluing anything in. If LED's are too bright, you can put some super glue on the bulbs to dim them. -

This is pretty amazing work, Homer! I have long wanted to make a 3D-printed beanie cap, but I lack the 3D CAD skills to produce one. Looking forward to seeing your progress on this! Any particular reason you chose the tile pattern for Columbia? It was unique in that it accommodated for the ejection seat panels above the crew seats. I think more modelers would prefer the more standard patterns used on Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour. Also, since Columbia had tiles that covered the entirety of the nose, the rest of your beanie cap would need to be covered in tiles as well. Here's a -
Which kit? Revell or Monogram? I have belly decals for the Monogram, and most of the markings. Better than what you would get from what is commercially available. I can also scale up my 1:144 decals, but to use at your own risk (since they might not fit exactly).

F Photobucket they can go to H-E-double-hockey sticks! Am I supposed to go back through all of my threads and re-link my posted images to a Flickr or some other account now? I sure as heck ain't giving them $400. I hope they crash and burn over this. I was sick of them anyway, their site had become so script-heavy and ad-intrusive.
