  1. Spectacular work. I just re-read Martin Caidin's "The Flying Forts." In it, Caidin chronicles how he became involved with resurrecting three B-17s that had been left to rot for years in the Arizona desert. They had become the home of birds and snakes, the tires had rotted and the wheels had sunk into the ground up to the axles, the fabric surfaces were history, they were in terrible shape. They were repaired and made flyable specifically for filming “The War Lover.” Caidin flew as co-pilot on one of the planes in the first mass flight of B-17s since WWII, he lamented that there might never aga
  2. A man after my own heart. Who wants to build the 1 millionth '109?
  3. I bought a 25 pound sack of the smallest gauge bird shot, they fit in the tiniest nooks and crannies and weigh more than BBs... ...It was a very good purchase, I have a lifetimes worth of nose weight.
  4. I've been hoping to convince someone to create some flightline vehicles in the major scales with their printer. I could give it a shot myself, but I have little confidence in my abilities. Like these pick ups in this China Lake photo. I couldn't find a military version of the Metro step van, but maybe you get where I'm going with this...
  5. I've had a few rough weeks, I fell and got dinged up a bit... ...In the meantime, I stumbled on some goodies. A nice Iwata top loader air brush... And some hard to find Testors paints.
  6. ...At least to me. Looky here what Santa (in the guise of the United States Postal Service) brung me😊! Even the decals are in decent shape! Maybe I can send in the "Young Astronaut" application in for "Space Cowboy" type geezers...
  7. I got one, nice to have something to aspire to...
  8. I scanned eBay, the 1990 something B/N is still kinda scarce...
  9. It looks like I'll have to scan them, I can't get a clear enough photo...
  10. I will work on that soon, I've had a few trying days...
  11. Yeah, I noticed that. I was just thinking of discussing that with the management...
  12. Let's see here... Looks like I'll need to work on this...
  13. Wow! Tough audience. Over 60 looks, no one chimed in. I guess I need to show some progress. I hacked apart the right wing (please excuse the political implications.) And hacked loose some of the clear parts. I taped the fuselage for a test fit. the wings turned out nearly perfect without tape. A slightly different view. You might notice the Sharpie marker ink, I've learned that out lining the parts prior to cutting exposes the plastic that should be removed. Rather than spending a week scrubbing the thing on a sheet of sandpaper, I took a rotar
  14. Looks like a good start. I have ancient Italeri A model, "Nam, baby!" It'll be a minute before I can get to work on it, due to current commitments. 'OPERATION "DELIBERATE GUARD", "SOUTHERN WATCH", "ENDURING FREEDOM" AND, "IRAQI FREEDOM" VETERAN.' ...I'm a Carter era vet, the only thing going on out there was "Operation Eagle Claw," I'm glad I missed that one. The only thing else going on back then was keeping close tabs on Ivan...
  15. My career had its ups n downs. I made a bit of AF history by being a member of the very last USAF crew chief class for piston powered aircraft. After I separated from active duty, I got my A&P license and worked 5 years for Zantop Airlines on Lockheed Electras and the "Greasy 8." After being laid off, I had my sad sack period where I lost my car, my house, and had to move in with the parents. Then their house burnt down and I lost everything else I owned except what I happened to have on, including approximately 200 model kits I'd collected over the years, plastic burns really well. My dad
  16. I retired from the Robins ALC C-17 modification center on December 31 2020 after about six years in the C-5 engine shop and another 15 years on the C-17. I wound up having significant health issues due to an automobile accident when I turned 18, nearly 50 years ago, and lost a lot of my mobility. At one time I had the run of the base and got to see a lot of cool stuff, soon after I got to work there, I heard the familiar sound of a J 79 engine compressor changing pitch. It turned out former F-4G drone controllers from Eglin would fly in to overnight at the Robins transit ramp, every former F-4
  17. I'm a newbie here. I've had a few friends who posted here and thought I'd give it a try. I made a commitment to start this project in a B-17 group build at Brit Modeler, it seems to me that most model manufacturers, and even builders believe that there were only two types of B-17s, the "G" model and the Memphis Belle. I recently stumbled on and snagged the ancient Rare Planes kit and figured I'd dial it back to the beginning. I've heard from some who have picked up one of these, but the clear parts were missing or yellowed. But min
