Moose135
It's that time of year again, the opening session of the UN General Assembly in New York. Once again we are seeing an influx of exotic aviation visitors in the skies of the city. While there are still more to come (I just heard I missed a Romanian 707 that arrived about an hour ago :) ) here are some of the highlights so far... We usually have the Turkish A319 spend the week at Republic Airport. I heard they came into NYC late Friday night, so I headed to FRG on Saturday morning. The A319 wasn't there (apparently it's staying at Stewart this year) but we did have a pair of French Air Force Falcon 7Xs on the ramp: The rest of Saturday was a little slow, with several arrivals (including the Iran Air 747SP) showing up at or after sunset. We did see the Vietnam Airlines 777 departing (most flights drop off their VIPs, then head elsewhere to park for the week) Sunday was a little bit busier, caught the Turkmenistan 767 arriving once again. We also had this Comlux A319 make a repeat appearance. Haven't heard which delegation it was carrying. This French Air Force A319 came in around mid-day. We had two Qatar Amiri Flight arrivals, an A330 and an A340:
Moose135
We had another gaggle in on Monday afternoon, led off by this Gainjet 757 carrying the Cameroon delegation. Global Jet Luxembourg Airbus A318 The French were back again, with both the A319 and Falcon 7X coming back into JFK, this time in much better light. The highlight of the week so far, this Slovakian Tu-154 left a long, smoky trail on approach. Well, I better head out before I miss anything else! I'll post more in the coming days (POTUS is scheduled in on Wednesday).

Steve N
Cool stuff! The Iranian 747 must be getting rather long in the tooth..it's gotta be from before the 1979 revolution. SN

Moose135
Thanks, guys! We have been fortunate to have just about perfect weather so far, and it should stick around through the end of the week. Job search got in the way this morning, and I missed that 707 and a USAF C-17, but got some interesting catches this afternoon. German Air Force A310 - the last Luftwaffe aircraft I photographed were West German Tornados out the back of my KC-135 more than 20 years ago! jester292
While waiting to depart LGA this evening, the Columbian 737 parked at the ramp (or maybe it was a Boeing Business Jet). We had great photo opportunities as the sun set (because we were departing 13) with the city backdrop, but I didn't have a camera. It arrived about 7:10pm eastern time. Orion Field
It must be quite a show watching those planes land!
Moose135
Today was one of those days...I got out to the JFK area around 12:45, but nothing had come in yet. They were landing Rwy 31R, which is also the preferred approach for Air Force 1 of late (due to construction and other things at the airport) I settled into our favorite spotting location, waiting for AF1 and watching for anything else that was inbound. After about 30 minutes, JFK switched to the dreaded 13L/22L split - the light is all wrong for 22L at that time, and there isn't a "low profile" location for 13L. Since I didn't know if anything else was inbound, and not wanting to miss AF1, I stayed at the 31R location, finished my lunch and caught up on some reading. About 3pm, I was able to get online and check a local forum with arrival information, and realized I missed several arrivals that came in on 13L. Around 3:30, I hear AF1 call in to tower requesting clearance to land on for 13L, the complete opposite end of where I was waiting... I did manage to get one shot after she landed: Before they switched off of 31R, I managed to get shots of three aircraft, a Lufthansa 747 and two JetBlue E-190s. I'm working on a collection of shots of all of JetBlue's aircraft - I'm missing 6 of 154 active in their fleet. One of the E-190s was one that I'm missing. The photo is blurry...FML :) Edited September 22, 2010 by Moose135
Moose135
Headed out to JFK this afternoon to catch some of the VIP departures. Unfortunately, family matters held me up, and I was tormented by text messages telling me what arrivals I was missing...since a number of interesting catches had already arrived, several of of headed over to Howard Beach on the other side of the airport to get them on their way out. About 15 minutes after we got there, the fog rolled in - at one point visibility was reported at under 1/8 mile They had about 7 straight arrivals go missed approach, including the Air France A380: Of course, the Iran 747SP and Russian IL-96 departed while the fog was in - I heard both depart, but all I saw was gray. At that point, I decided to head home, but passing the airport the fog started lifting, and I ducked into one of our usual spots to check the conditions, and wait for Air Force 1 to depart. It was still a little hazy when they went out, but at least we could see them! I think this might be the best shot I got all afternoon:

Moose135
Thanks, Aaron - it wasn't really that bad most of the day, only an hour or two this afternoon, just at absolutely the wrong time!

Moose135
A few more from Saturday. Wasn't sure if I was going to hit JFK, as today was the annual Kids Day Open House at La Guardia Airport. I started getting text messages about JFK arrivals, so I headed there for a bit before running over to LGA. We've seen this guy already, but here he is departing. One of the "Big Fish" I missed earlier in the week. This is about the only time of year we get 707s into JFK anymore - they used to be a dime a dozen around here. After the Romanian 707 departed, we headed up to LGA. We weren't really expecting any UN activity, although last year the Iraqi President departed in a Miami Air 737BBJ. The LGA Open House was a little slow, as almost all the military aircraft canceled at the last minute - they were scheduled to get 2 F/A-18s, 2 C-130s, and a KC-135. They ended up with a Navy T-6A Texan II. Without much fanfare, this guy taxied in and parked in the transient/GA area, right next to where the open house was being held. It is the Colombian Air Force Boeing 737BBJ Presidental Transport, picking up their President and the rest of the delegation visiting the UN this week. It took a while, but eventually the aircraft was fueled and loaded, then the motorcade arrived and they boarded. We weren't sure we were going to watch the departure - the open house officially ended at 4pm, but the airliners used for tours all had big crowds waiting to walk through, so the Port Authority wasn't too aggressive about moving us to the buses and off the ramp. It was almost 4:30 by the time the BBJ left - we were on just about the last bus off the ramp, but we were able to get our shots. I missed a few things I would have liked to shoot, but in all it wasn't a bad week. Except for some fog on Friday, the weather couldn't have been better, and we got a good mix of visitors in this year. I have a photo shoot on Sunday that will keep me away from JFK (and I hope I can post some photos - they should be interesting!) and I'll post some shots of the LGA open house on Sunday night. Thanks for all the kind comments!

GreyGhost
That Romanian 707 is a Beauty ... It's always strange how much we take seeing things for granted and then really miss them when they are nearly gone ... Thanks again, Kind Sir ... Gregg
