Bigasshammm
SO I have been finishing up some projects and not starting any others but I wanted to do something quick and fairly easy. Have this old Hasegawa P-51d kit I'll throw together. Will be oob with Superscale decals as long as the decals don't disintegrate on me. (I'll test one first) Instructions for the kit are completely in Japanese but it's self explanatory with the pictures. Did a little work on the cockpit today but not enough to take a picture. Will probably have the fuselage halves buttoned up tomorrow. Box and sprues... Edited August 16, 2011 by Bigasshammm
Bigasshammm
Where I'm at now... I'll probably get the fuse buttoned up today. Soon as the kids go down for nap it's The Final Countdown and modeling time. Nothing better on a rainy day. I'm also in for some Tuskegee Airmen decals on eBay so I'll be doing one of those for this. Will make a nice compliment to the 72nd B-17F I also started building that will have markings from my grandfather's BG the 483rd.
HOLMES
Bigasshammm , This is going to be a good build...Good start. Edited August 16, 2011 by HOLMES
Bigasshammm
She's basically ready for paint. Might spray some silver today not sure yet. Probably prime it first to check. Fit of this little thing was superb. No filler and very minimal sanding just to remove the glue line.

Is this Mustang going to be flying escort for the B-17 you're working on in the background? :)
Bigasshammm
Nice work so far. Is this Mustang going to be flying escort for the B-17 you're working on in the background? :) Yea that's why I decided to do a Tuskegee bird. The 17 has decals for a 483rd BG ship and my grandfather was in the 483rd. Different squadron but that's ok for now. (I have another 48th 17 I'll be building as the ship he flew in to Memmingen Germany) I've read that the red tails flew cover for the 483rd on a few occasions so I figured why not. I also know that the majority of the cover for my grandfather's flights were done by P-38s so I'll have to decipher which fgs and do one or two of those in the future. Sprayed it with MM SS Buffing Metalizer today. Will give it a day or two then I have some other compounds to start buffing her. Once I get the decal sheet and choose an aircraft I'll be able to decide what needs masked and repainted later.
Bigasshammm
Paint to plastic. This week I'll be buffing and buffing and buffing and buffing and buffing and buffing... You get the idea!
JasonW
Not really related to the Mustang build, but which kit is the B-17?
Bigasshammm
Academy B-17 F Hells Angels boxing but I'm using aeromaster decals. There's a small thread for it in the fortress gb.
Dirkpitt289
Both the Fort and the little helper are looking good
Bigasshammm
Some initial buffing. I'll probably hit it in places 1-2 more times. Most of this sheen will go away with Future but it's either that or leave a fingerprint on it every time you handle it.
Dave Hill
AAAAAAHHHHHH...My eyes!!!!! B)...man that's a beautiful finish...sad you'll have to tone it down! Dave
Bigasshammm
I like the way this stuff makes it look but it's so unrealistic to use. Once done and you start buffing you can never handle the aircraft unless you wore cotton gloves all the time. At my house that's just not possible. I should probably drop the bucket and just buy some alclad and try that out. I would never do a 1/48th aircraft in this stuff. I got two coats of Future on her and she's super shiny but you lose the subtle differences between panels. Not sure why that is exactly. But now she can be handled and masked for the several other coats of paint that will need applied once the decals get here. They're in the mail so it shouldn't be too much longer. Flash makes it really bright! B) Edited August 12, 2011 by Bigasshammm
Dave Hill
From here the finish still looks awesome... I've heard the MM Metalizers can be a PITA so I'm going to be using Alclad for the first time...I've been practicing with it and the results I got were better than I expected...can't wait to shoot my 'stang with it!! Dave Yeah what I've done, on the only two nmf planes I've done since getting back into modeling (F-86 and now this), is use MM stainless steel buffing metalizer. Then on top of that I use this unk aluminum powder type stuff. (the name is painted over so I can't tell what it says) Comes in a bottle similar to MM paintes. Dip a qtip into it then apply it to model and buff away. Really brings out a nice metal look but leaves fingerprints like you wouldn't believe. The Future protects it all but it dulls the look a bit. It will look fine once painted the rest of the colors and weathered a little.
mclents
.... I use this unk aluminum powder type stuff. (the name is painted over so I can't tell what it says) Comes in a bottle similar to MM paintes..... Could it be SNJ polishing powder. Messy stuff for me. I don't use anything but Alclad. Just like my reliable MM paints, they just don't give me problems...... McLents
Bigasshammm
I have yet to try alclad but that day is coming soon. I've got a couple nmf 1/48s to build and could never use this stuff.
Bigasshammm
So I'm going to do this as Little Freddie from the Tuskegee Airmen. Bout to spray the red right now. Still have to buy a little jar of yellow. Anyway I have a couple questions. I've seen pics (of models) with both the yellow band just aft of the prop spinner and I've seen without. Anyone know on the real thing what it was? Also the front anti-glare panel was OD green and not black correct? That will be the next thing I paint so if I don't hear anything it'll be green. K edit:: I hate cleaning red out of my airbrush. Edited August 16, 2011 by Bigasshammm

marvin20
Looking very nice indeed! Can't wait to see more pictures of it!
Bigasshammm
She's painted. Wife stole or hid the camera so I have to find it to take pics. Still have to paint the propellers, landing gear and wheels, and canopy parts but shouldn't take long. Hopefully I'll be able to add some decals either late tonight or tomorrow. Bigasshammm
Decals, final construction, and final detail painting complete. Just applied final Future coat. Later on will secure rear canopy and apply some subtle pastel weathering. Wife still has the camera in her purse so I can't take pics yet. Maybe get them up tonight or tomorrow night for sure as tomorrow is zoo day! I did the best with the decals as I had no placement guides for anything. Used the pictures I've been using for the paint reference as a decal reference as well. Turned out good I think.

Bigasshammm
Fine Crappy teaser phone pics...
Bigasshammm
She's done. Uploading the pics now and they'll be in the finished thread soon. Disclaimer:: I had no markings or paint instructions so I used pictures I found on the web. There was a die-cast model of Little Freddie on a site that had numerous pictures so I used that extensively. If it is wrong then I am wrong. I also had no idea on the stencils so I again tried to use the same pictures and then wung it a little. Hope you like. Edited August 18, 2011 by Bigasshammm
