1/72 C-130J-30 [COMPLETE]

Recommended Posts

First time poster, but not first time modeller. I've been lurking around a bit to find out tips and what-not on some of the things I don't know... but, in any case.

I've been working on this kit for a short bit over the Christmas and New Years break. I think I'm doing ok. This is my first time using a resin conversion kit as well as a photoetch detail panel. In the past I've just been doing vanilla kits but this time I wanted to do an Aussie RAAF C-130J-30. There's no C-130J-30 kits so the resin is a must. And, I figured why the heck not for the photoetch :P

Anyway, progress photos! Please be nice :)

When I just started and mustered the courage to cut the resin parts ;)

Got everything puttied and sanded - also drilled in holes for the windows.

Resin cockpit seats aren't the best, but I got lazy. Also, the cockpit really doesn't look anything like the inside of the C-130J... lower console is ... i don't know what the hell it is. It's like some hybrid of C-130's. Oh well.

Flaps down! So much effort getting all those things glued on... heh.

Thanks guys.

Here's two more pics just to test what it looks like with the wings on:

I'm really liking the look with the flaps down - it's so much better.

Oh. In my haste to post progress pictures, I probably should have mentioned what and where I got the parts;

Obviously the base model kit is by Italeri.

The resin conversion kit (Lockheed C-130J-30 Hercules Conversion) is by Hamilton Hobbies.

The photoetch detail panels are by Flightpath.

Great job on the Herc. I have not seen a build with the conversion set yet.

This boxing is of an old H model kit with added sprues to make it a J.

A few fixes needed:

Both of the small front windows must be covered & one of the side kick windows also.

On the paratroop door air deflectors you must sand off the JATO Lugs and scribe a panel for the ALQ.

These are a few of the major mistakes with this kit. I hope this info helps.

Cheers & Semper Fi,

Jason

Very nice progress on that J-30. Just in case you didn't know...the side hatch on the right side was done away with on those planes...the center round window up front(both sides) has a big escape hatch with it for ground evacuation. Your wing flaps look really good...I have the same set in 48th scale and they weigh a ton in the bag. Good job so far on the handsome, sleek, high performance C-130J...

Thanks for all the tips. Yea, I know there's a lot of problems with this model kit which is unfortunate. I guess it's a good thing it comes with a picture booklet - I've been using it for reference every now and then. The issue with the side hatch being done away with is easily fixed by installing the door upside down ;)

As blasphemous as this may sound though, I'm not going to do a lot of scribing on this - I've never really done it before and unfortunately don't have the patience to do it (for whatever reason I try to rush and it ruins things). Of course I'll re-scribe lines I've sanded away - to the best of my crappy ability anyway!

All resin parts are from the same conversion kit, apart from the extension plugs, it comes with floor extensions, sponson extensions, pilot seats, engine nacelles, spinners and propellers, flare housings, and nose ECM sensors.... I think that's everything.

USMC Herc: You can also get 1/48 photoetch detail kits from Flightpath - they do all scales, which is pretty good.

As for markings, it's going to be Aussie 37 SQN RAAF - by Flying High Decals ;)

Nice progress Vylen, I have Ryan's conversion to do a 37SQN bird. Mine will be in the Anniversary scheme using Flying High decals. How have you found the fit of the conversion parts. I have an older set which looks a little rougher than yours.

The front extension plug fits, but isn't quite level with the original fuselage. The propeller blades aren't entirely uniform... but that's ok. Everything else seems fine.

As for progress. I got the interior all fixed up and the two halves are now one whole. I need to putty up where they joined especially the fuselage underside. For whatever reason, i think interior walkway thing (half asleep right now, heh) prevented me from putting the two halves perfectly.. oh well. No big deal since it's only the underside... no one's meant to see the underside ;)

Always find it amusing having to scour stuff to use as a counter-balance.

And suddenly... the body is ready for painting :)

Given the size of the thing, this is going to be... hard... heh. Especially since I'm a hand painter! Oh well. Good thing humbrol paints are slow to dry, makes it a little bit easier.

I only had normal masking tape (read: cheapo stuff) to try get a straight edge for the underside paint. Unfortunately, it resulted in a not-so-straight edge as the paint seeped under it. But, it could be looking worse. Should be (hopefully) easy to touch up the lines.

And here's some of the cleaned up edges and part of the underside...

Apologies as I'm not that brilliant of a painter, but I still think it looks good... right? :P

All that's left to do it paint the air intake things on the engines... paint and glue the door on then apply the decals... might take the next couple days since I'm back at work tomorrow - argh.

I don't - I had to get the conversion kit through a reseller (Southern Sky Models in this instance). The thing about the conversion kit is that it's not commonly produced and can take some time to get if none are in stock - it took me two months to receive it after ordering.

Sorry I can't be of any further help.

And... it's complete :)

Decals were nuts.. and I messed up the Kangaroos on the wings - should've been centered to the NO STEP outlines but that's what happened when I put the Kangaroos on first... whoops. Just try not think about it too much :P
