arnobiz
Hello, I will build this kit straight from the box (i.e. no aftermarket but maybe some scratch-building) for this GB: The kit has been reviewed here and I will build it in these markings: This will be my first (i.e. practice) build of this kit, I have a second one which I will build in the box art markings if I have time. Looking forward to this GB, Arnaud
White Wolf
Nice choice, I have the DXM decals for that bird. Looking forward to seeing the build and picking up some tips!
phantom
Very colourful!
arnobiz
Work has started quite normally with the cockpit. Contrary to the instructions I did not assemble the back wall with the tub but rather with the rear fuselage to ensure perfect alignment: Dry fit showed quite a gap between the front IP and the coaming: In order to correct this I glued the front landing gear bay to one of the front fuselage halves so that I could easily test fit the cockpit. I glued bits of plasticard (In white) to the bottom of the tub to ensure easy positionning and added a small shim at the front end to lift the front cockpit relative to the fuselage: Then I added bits of plasticard (White) on the top edge of the front IP until there was no more gap: Cockpit painting can now start :) All comments welcome, Arnaud Edited January 6, 2014 by arnobiz
Brutus
Coming on nicely. Once the canopy is closed, there isn't much to see of the office. Should be an interesting scheme, lotsa masking while on the painting stage.
arnobiz
Thanks! The kit intakes are not very convincing having a square vertical wall at the junction with the fan: First, paint the fan Next, cut a bit of thin (0.25mm) plastic sheet to size. Note the small extensions I glued at the ends to improve the bond Dry fit to check Done! This is the only bit of significant scratch-building I'll do for this build :) Cheers, Arnaud
arnobiz
Hello, Small step to report today: Flaps dropped using a Tamiya 0.1mm etched saw. Before: After: Not much but this will add a bit of life to the model (It will be in-flight by the way). Arnaud
jochemp
Cool looking markings mate, keep up the good work.
arnobiz
Thanks! Cockpit & pilots finished, the rear part is not glued but I needed it it place to make sure the seat was correctly located. The pilots visor will receive a coat of Future to make them shiny and the HUD is still missing. Cheers, Arnaud
arnobiz
The kit intakes are pretty good. The Aires kit is certainly better and much easier but it costs more than the kit itself... After assembly and careful fitting I applied a couple of black coats followed by masking and painting in various metallic shades (Vallejo Model Air). All comments welcome, Arnaud Edited January 12, 2014 by arnobiz
arnobiz
Hello, The fuselage is now assembled (The rear part that is, wings included) and the metallic parts around the exhausts painted with various mixes of Vallejo metallic shades. The pigments are quite coarse, I would not use them for an NMF. Cockpit is also finished: And finally I spent some time trying to find the right mixes to get the camo blues. I found that the right mixes are 70925/70883 1:1 (light blue) and 70925/71111 1:1 (dark blue). Cheers, Arnaud
arnobiz
The grey camo (Vallejo 46 & 50) has been sprayed and the masking done over the last 2 weeks (No I did not enjoy it!). Next, the medium blue (tomorrow) :) Arnaud
SERNAK
Hi Arnaud, The kit seems to come along nicely, with no significant surprises!!! I am experiencing a similar problem to yours, I mean with the aircraft's colors. At least, you have a range of colors to help you develop the right shade of dark blue. I only have a couple of b/w photos of the paint scheme I want to apply to my model (which by the way, I don't have it yet. Just a small detail!!! :D ) and my only guess is that it might be the FS-35109 (it's a two-tone blue scheme. Light and dark blue - you can see the photos on the topic, "reference photos") Good luck with the rest of your build!!!!!
arnobiz
Good luck Sernak, mixing colours really is not that difficult. I had always been afraid of doing it but this is my first time and I should have tried earlier! Here is how the medium blue turned out. The 1:1 mix was actually a tad too dark, I slightly increased the proportion of light grey from 70925/70883 1:1 to 2:3 and a final light coat of 1:2. Dark blue is next! arnobiz
Getting there :) This is my first 4- colour camo and I certainly learned quite a bit in the process!
Neo
Nice job!!
arnobiz
Thanks Neo. The zillion decals are finally all on, it took the best of a week. I thought I was go straight on to a second F-15DJ but I'll need a pause! :) Some panels to paint, then on with the washes and done! Arnaud
arnobiz
Youhouuu, finished! This is the most complicated paint job I've ever done by far and I learned quite a bit in the process. I still need to make a proper base for it and I might add tanks but for the moment that's it! I'm a bit disapointed that the Hasegawa scheme is a bit off compared to the real one but I can live with that, next time I'll be more careful. Also the stencil positionning plan is not 100% correct. I hope you like it, Arnaud Edited March 8, 2014 by arnobiz
