G_Marcat_Italy
There is in the my box of unfinished models a nice Phantom F-4C/D from Monogram, 1/48th scale. I had started it but then loosed the interest into go forward after a while. What to do with it? Today the idea: to complete it as a SINGLE SEAT, SINGLE ENGINE PHANTOM. This is a my preliminary drawing, I do these drawings to understand what is possible to do and to obtain. Here is an image of the donor kit: as first work done cut away the keel in the under tail: Edited March 14, 2010 by G_Marcat_Italy
Sebastijan
interesting project!
G_Marcat_Italy
This morning done a little of work. Removed from the tail a portion to shorten the Phantom and to made the empennage a bit litlle. Then taken the saw and disassembled the Phantom into subassemblies: And now the hard part: to rebuild all.
GreyGhost
Cool, sort of like the original Phantom concept ... But, where does the tailhook go ? Gregg
G_Marcat_Italy
But, where does the tailhook go ? Gregg I'm looking to find a solution for this problem. I would to use the original tailhook grafted on the underbelly adding a fairing before of it, but think it look unreal. Alternatively I could to look in the spare parts bank in search of a more simple tailhook. Will do a test to solve the problem.
GreyGhost
Maybe something like the Demon had ? This is going to be a fun build to watch ... Gregg
G_Marcat_Italy
Reassembled the shortened tail: Rough Assembly: Tail assembly a bit more difined: But I don't like the result: appear too much like the F-102's tail... The front fuselage reassembled, newly glued. Added a plastic wall that will be shaped because I plan of to graft on the nosecone of the F-4E.

stubbyhouse
Ya I don't like the look of the vert tail either , maybe move the toe back more to the rear increasing the angle and make the top more flat again . Just an ideal . Never thought of this bird this way single engine and single seat interesting to say the least . stubby

But the problem is about the risk of to overdone: cutting here, lowering there at the end I risk is of to have a 1/48 jet with a 1/72 tail.

I think you'll need a certain height for the vertical tail, unless you want to play with ventral fins, for directional stability. Giles

G_Marcat_Italy
The Mini-Phantom is taking shape: There is a lot more to be done, but at least is possible to see the shape. Edited March 17, 2010 by G_Marcat_Italy

SteveV22FE
Good point....isn't a single engine Phantom called a Demon?
G_Marcat_Italy
Today done a lot: added a fairing to cover the rear cockpit, added the under nose IR dome, modified the two air intakes and applied to the fuselage. Others modifications on the tail zone. Edited March 22, 2010 by G_Marcat_Italy
Joe Hegedus
Exactly what I was thinking; single-seat/single engine Phantom = Demon. There's a reason that McDonnell added that second engine...
G_Marcat_Italy
Today given to the F-4SE a layer of primer. There is also too much to be done ... a lot of imperfections everywhere. Seen that glued an air intake a millimeter forward than the other intake. As usual.
GreyGhost
Nice work, G ! :) Have you thought about what squadron you want to do ? Gregg
