  1. 1. Would you participate in a Night Fighter GB?

Recommended Posts

I suppose I could build an F7F for it. It's been in my stash for too long now.

I actually though about posting a F7F. Any good kit of it these days?

I'm in with at least one P-61.

Cheers, Terry

(certifiable P61 NUT!!)

P-61s are cool. Which kit do you plan on building?

Absolutely, but I won't start any time soon.

Aaron

Looking at the GB calendar, I don't think it will start anytime soon.

I have the Italeri 1/48 kit, which is a re-issue of the AMT kit. It looks very nice in the box. But no idea about accuracy or anything.

Older kit, not so great detail, needs some tlc, but looks like a Tigercat to me.

So this would include all weather interceptors like the F-89 Scorpion and F-94 Starfire?

It does get a little murky as you get to the 1960s. It seems like at least in the US the F4 Phantom was the first multi-role fighter and by the early 60s it had replaced most of the dedicated all weather interceptors in the USN and USAF.

I've got lots of nightfighters and 1950s all weather interceptors in the stash so I'd join in.

This would not include all weather interceptors, unless the subject modeled had specific modifications for flying at night.

I would like to but probably not. I have too many other GB's I've committed to and one that I'm working on that I've lost interest in for now. Need a kick start.

It was a change in name more than mission, as the late WW2 nightfighters like P-61, F7F-1N and F82 became "all weather interceptors" in the 1950s. Their jet powered replacements never used the term nightfighter but were fully capable of being used without modification in that role and were used operationally as night fighters. In Korea all weather jet interceptors like the F-94 and F3D claimed night victories along side the older piston engine F-82, F7F and F4U nightfighters.

It gets a little messy in the 1950s as even a high performance fighter like the F-106 is in theory a nightfighter, being fully capable in low visibility conditions at a time most fighters were designed for daylight / clear weather conditions. Personally I have a hard time calling an F-106 a nightfighter, but have an easy time including the awkward looking F-89.

How about a timeframe of 1914 to 1960 and this list of aircraft allowed. Not a complete list obviously, but covers most of the night fighter aircraft.

I think that's a good list to get us started, but I would hope you would allow for additions. For example, I was hoping to use the nightfighter conversion set I have for my PV-1 Ventura. It's not on the list, but it certainly served in WWII.

That would definitely work and would be great to see. As I mentioned that list definitely isn't complete, just a source to start from.

Looks like a good list to start with.

I've got a lot to choose from in the stash P-38, P-61, P-70, F7F, F-82, F-86, F-89, F-94 just from a quick look. Glad I have until September to make a decision.
