1/48 Hasegawa A-4 E,F,M boxings

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a 1/48 Hasegawa A-4E/F boxing. I want to build an E/F with the hump back.

It looks like I can get the M boxing for a pretty good price. Can I make E/F from the M boxing? My initial research tells me this is not possible without major surgery. The forward fuselage seems different between E/F vs M boxings. Can you confirm?

If not, which Hase boxings are ok? For instance, will this have all the necessary parts (hump back)?

I am not sure how many different sprue types and boxings are out there between E, F and M. Any help would be much appreciated.

Any of the Hasegawa A-4E/F kits, other than perhaps the Lady Jessie boxing, one of the Adversary boxings, and the Blue Angels boxing, will get you to a normal, standard A-4E or A-4F. The ProModeler boxing will as well.

The Adversary, Blue Angel (Hasegawa's own, with a photo on the box art) and Lady Jessie boxings, I believe, only include the larger "M" intakes used on the Super Fox upgrades. I know there have been at least 2 releases of Adversary boxings; the one that has the VFA-27 airplane going from right to left on landing approach on the box art photo is the one with the larger intakes IIRC. The one with the Top Gun jet taxiing (side number 56 I believe) has the normal A-4E/F intakes as the kit markings are for airplanes that never got the larger ones. This is from memory, sorry if I'm mistaken.

Joe's memory has it right, I can confirm two boxings at least: the Hasegawa "A-4F Skyhawk Adversary" (kit 9660) only has the larger intakes, while the "A-4E/F Skyhawk T0p Gun" (kit 7358) has the normal intakes.

The latest A-4E USS Midway boxing can be built with humpback as E or F with the standard intakes as well.

(I have the A-4F 9660 kit for sale at $30 if you're interested)

Thank you everybody, all the info was very useful. I am not ready to pull the trigger on the purchase yet (building for someone, so need to understand what markings they want) but I may start looking for a kit for purchase in the next week or so.

Thank you.

So the Pro Modeler boxed Hasegawa Blue Angel kit has the bigger(Super Fox) intakes? I did not know that.Thanks.

No, the ProModeler box is the standard A-4E/F kit with the standard intakes. The Blue Angel box that Hasegawa did itself has the SF intakes. It also includes a white metal boarding ladder housing for the left wingroot gun position. The ProModeler release does not include a boarding ladder housing as used by the Blue Angels, just the guns or the wingroot fairings without gun ports.

Interestingly, the Hasegawa TA-4J kits all include the boarding ladder housing in plastic IIRC, but none of the other Skyhawk kits do.

While we are on the subject, if I may, are there any in-flight photos of an A-4E/F with the airbrakes fully or partially deployed? I am looking for a shot where the slats are retracted but the airbrakes are partially (and perhaps minimally) out. I am looking for a pose that is just regular in-flight (maneuvering ok) but not a landing or take-off instance (i.e., gears fully retracted).
