  1. I know the GB is closed but I finally finished this High Planes 1/72 N from the 507th FG on Ie Shima, 1945. You can see more on the in progress thread.
  2. I know this group build is over but I wanted to show that I got this one done. I finally finished her after much blood letting and a string of profanity that is probably still drifting over the Wasatch Mountains. So, what do I think? Well, this kit has good shape and building it took be back to the days of Airfix and Frog kits. I bought two of the High Planes kits. If I do another, I will graft the wings on to a Tamiya fuselage. I think that would be easier in the long run. Hopefully, my pleading to Mr. Song from Trumpeter will get them to shrink down their excellent P-47N kit.

    F8F-1 Bearcat

This is a warbird, so may not be 100% correct, but it appears to be a round shaped crankcase to me. I am not sure what version of R2800 the F8F-1 used. Possibly the the R2800-30W or -34W versions. HTH Clicky

    1/72 T-34 Kits

All be darned, that is a four-holer. They sure got a lot of mileage out of the orginal T-34 design.

    1/72 T-34 Kits

Hasegawa made a 1/72 T-34 with reciprocating engine. You can probably find one on eBay. They are not uncommon.
  6. Great photos. I've always liked the 44th FS P-40F's. To my knowledge they have never been covered in decal form. What is especially interesting about these P-40F's is the 1941 serial numbers. That means they were ordered in fiscal year 1941 and were probably manufactured in early 1942. Apparently the Merlin engine Warhawk came to the AAF pretty early. I think the boys on the 'canal were happy to get any airplanes in 1942-43. It must have been something of a problem to support Merlin and Alison engine P-40's, as well as P-39's and P-38's.
  7. Google Image is your friend...I searched using "P-47D Miss Mary Lou" Clicky Clicky From the information I have, it had blue spinner, cowl flaps, wing tips, fuselage stripe and vertical and horizontal tail stripes. There are also two photos of this aircraft in "Air Force Colors Vol 3" by Dana Bell. Superscale did this bird in 1/72 on sheet 72-775. I think Hasegawa also had these markings in one of their 1/48 releases. One of the photos listed above shows this aircraft carrying rocket tubes, which are rarely seen on P-47's.

    Iwo Jima based P-51D's

Jennings, I am just happy to have an Iwo Mustangs sheet in gentleman's scale. I humbly beg you to give us more Iwo Mustangs in 1/72. Who owns all the Aeromaster rights now? Is it Squadron? Would they release some of the 1/48 Iwo stuff in 1/72? I want more. How about "Nip Knocker?" Try googling that one and see what you get.

    Iwo Jima based P-51D's

I have completed another Iwo Mustang. This one is from the 46th FS, 21st FG. I found a very nice starboard view photo of it. Most of these Iwo Mustangs had names on both sides. Sometimes they matched, sometimes they didn't. Many of them were assigned two pilots. One pilot named the port side, one named the starboard side. I'm not sure if this Mustang had different names, so it got "Tiny Gay Baba" on both sides. A photo of the original aircraft. Note that it does not have the two "Uncle Dog" antennas on the aft fuselage. This photo was probably taken before they were fitted to all a
  10. Since you asked...I personally don't like to have a mirror or polished natural metal finish on military aircraft, unless it was a Thunderbird F-100 or presidential airplane. I would use the standard aluminum finish with the duralumin for alternating panels. I'm sure you have checked the reference photos for your aircraft. Here are a few I found. Clicky Scroll down through this site (Japanese, I think) and you will see some nice B&W photos of Penrod & Sam. Note the finish is not real bright and shiny. Here's a couple from the LittleFriends site in color. Very nice. Clicky Cl
  11. Jennings, The way I understand you is the Aeroclub set 103 that Mark S mentions are not the same as the Curtis Electric props as used on some of the the C-121A's? The Aeroclub site is down since the owners death so I don't know what they look like. I have wondered if it would be possible to cobble something together using the Academy B-29/B-50 props (the Academy B-29 kit I have includes both the Curtis Electric and Hamilton Standard props). Of course you would have to change the hub to three blade. cheers
  12. I stumbled across this kit on the web. LF Models 1/72 Vultee BT-13 Vibrator Resin Kit. Don't know anything about it, but it is currently available on evil bay. Clicky
  13. Greetings, I've always liked the look of the early C-121A Constellations that had the props without spinners. You rarely see Constellations without spinners. Several of these C-121A's were used as VIP transports, etc. The props appear different than standard Connie props as well. See photos below. What could be used for these props? Any thoughts are appreciated. I'm thinking 1/72 scale but I think it would apply also to 1/144. Clicky Here is a civil Connie with the more often seen props with spinners. Clicky
  14. I have a Hasegawa 1/72 B-17F that I started in 1977. I am still working on it. It's getting nearly ready for paint. Of course, I took about 22 years off from modeling. I just recently got some nice Zotz decals from an ARC member. I'm going to finish her this year. Since this is the jet forum, I also have an Italeri 1/72 B-58 Hustler that I started in 1985, that has paint on it but is not finished. It's one of those "Oh the humanity" metallic finish jobs that just didn't come out right. I keep looking at her and swearing I'll make it right.
  15. Greetings, I need some 110 gallon drop tanks for a 1/48 scale Iwo Jima Mustang. Apparently, the old Mongogram 1/48 scale F-80 kit has some tanks that are the cat's meow. Here is the type of tank I'm looking for. I'll pay postage, etc. :) Clicky
  16. I feel your pain, brother. I used to have the old Rareplane P-35 in the stash, but sold it off a few years ago. I would sure like to see a modern injected molded P-35A in 1/72 scale. I recently stumbled across an ad for the Choroszy (Poland) P-35/S-2 racer. It's not a P-35A and I'm not sure what it would take to make it into one, but at least it's a start. At minimum you would need to add the machine gun fairings on the nose. Here's the link to their web site. Clicky One of the dealers on evil bay advertises this kit from time to time. It's kind of pricey as I recall.
  17. L/F Eagle Strike 1/72 sheet 72-011. It has a 51st Fighter Group P-51C "Gladys" on it. I will either buy the whole sheet or just that bird. I really only want those markings. PM me with your terms. I can do PayPal or "analog" payment methods and I'm in the Salt Lake City, Utah, USA corner of the world.
  18. Holy resurecting thread, Batman! Would it be possible to make a decal for the 32nd Bomb Squadron emblem on the nose of this B-17B? The emblem is pretty well illustrated in Dana Bell's book.
  19. Update Oct. 14: My AT-38B is done, I just haven't been able to take a photo and get it uploaded. I'll try and post it in the next day or so. I have been working on this Sword 1/72 T-38 kit for a while. I think it is still good for this group build. I have some really nice decals from Two Bobs for the Lead In Fighter Training AT-38B's from Holloman AFB. These have a special meaning for me as I flew them. So, off to the races...
  20. Greetings, I'm going to do an Eduard 1/72 Aero L-39 Albatross. Got this off of Evil Bay a while back and have been wanting to build it. A really nice little kit. Not sure of the markings I will use yet. Probably something from the box.

    External Fuel Tanks

Verlinden makes a set of paper tanks for the Mustang. You could use those. Clicky
  22. I already asked Eli to scale down his 1/48 P-61 sheet and this was the reply: "Guys, I've made several 1/72 WWII decal sets when the 1/48 were also released. I have sold out of the bigger scale everytime and still have the smaller scale on the shelves. The vast majority of modelers, specially in America, prefer the bigger scale over the 72nd offering. Really, it's a big investment....... I need at least a min. sale of 300 sheets to at least to cover expenses. Thanks, ER" You can find the thread here... Clicky I will ask Mark from WolfPak decals. He only does 1/72 and sells out most

    fixed or free

I usually just stick the prop on the shaft. I can take the prop off for transport to contests, etc. Maybe you could just leave the prop off until the end and "glue" it in with white glue. It will secure it in place, but you will be able to remove it if needed.
  24. Welcome. Try this site, called "P-47 Heaven". Nigel runs it and he roots out more obscure P-47 photos than anyone I know. Clicky
  25. Thanks guys. I have the 1984 Squadron/Signal B-17 in Action book. I'll keep an eye peeled for the Detail & Scale B-17 Part 1 book.
