  1. Thanks to ALL above for taking time to respond - and yes, once I posted I found the original thread D'oh! UK Tax & bureaucracy - the Gift that keeps on Giving!
  2. Apologies if this question is answered else where....... So the Caracal April newsletter has arrived and yet again some great new sheets appear in the pipeline. However there is a genuine apology from Caracal Models stating that: "We regret to let you know that due to recent changes in UK VAT rules, Caracal Models will no longer be able to ship orders for less than $180 to the United Kingdom. We will still ship orders for more than this amount, but you will be responsible for paying VAT upon receipt. " I thought Caracal was based in Texas, USA and thus not part of
  3. Just ordered the F-4G sheet for a Revell "e" that I've already converted but coul;dn't get the decals - my lucky day I guess! Question: What is the difference between the slatted wings on an "E/G" and a NAVY "S"? Can I use these to convert the Tamiya "J" to an "S" (acknowledging the need for the inboard modifications) Thank-you
  4. Thank-you for posting. I think I'd given up hope of ever seeing this kit in production. "June 2013 before the A-6E TRAM" - perfect! enough time to save the money AND of course our politicians will have resolved the current financial crisis so importing this kit from china will be as cheap as chips...........do you think trumpeter will except Greek Euros?
  5. Royal Navy still use them at RNAS Yeovilton. Mind you the way things are going there soon won't be any planes left to protect from birds
  6. Great post, I really didn't know that. (M61 Vulcan muzzle velocity 1050 m/s....F-4 at MACH 1.2 (ground level (fight seems to be <1000ft) is 412 m/s - so that must be some 'lead' he was giving to his aim to hit a turning aircraft! Did F-4E have radar aided gun sights or was this real "Kentucky Wind age"? Thanks for the YouTube link. I'm not an F-4 expert, but I thought it was only the F-4D that carried the AIM-4 Falcon? ....and by 1972 AIM-4 on any F-4 was surely no longer carried (pilot has to initiate (gas)? cooling of seeker head approx 60 secs before firing, requiring some "heads down
  7. Just finished a Revell F/A-18F using the Wolfpak resin flaps 'n slats (from Lucky Model - still cheaper than hasagawa).....but the surface detail is not as detailed as Hasagawa's and very shallow (very difficult to get a "wash" to hold)> Shape is OK, but I would question the shape of the spine (but would defer to experts). The big issue is the "depth" at the front. (i.e. around front windscreen to nose) - way too shallow making the nose wheel look over scale. So the dilemma here for me is which Super Hornet next? I cannot afford the retailers price here in the UK for a Hasagawa 1/48th, b
  8. Another boring Falklands ditty for you: My 1st visit there was in '87. This was in the days before SATNAV (the GPS type) so our navigation onboard was by visual bearings and radar ranges off prominent coastal features. All our navigational charts were freshly printed, but in the small print that explained "date of last survey" i was expecting something in the singles or even 10's of years......however most of the area was "last surveyed by Capt Cook year 17xx" (!)(?). All fairly accurate stuff, but in the early '90s when GPS SATNAV became a regular feature it was discovered that most of his c
  9. Woodwards "100 days" is the best (although very much from the British perspective). Again "Air War South Atlantic" is recommended (written just after war? I recall). Scooter's brief overview post above is pretty well spot on. I joined the RN 3 years after the war and have had various stories recounted from both the ordinary sailors/marines viewpoint as well as senior management. Sadly politicians (hyped on by media?) who have never been fired upon in their lives seem to relish stirring up the 'crowds' for their own gains at this 30th anniversary - regardless of the feelings of many UK/Argentin
  10. Great series of books that has opened a whole new chapter to how I do (& enjoy) my modelling - Thank-you. (I'm at the 90% stage of finishing Trumpeters 1/32 F/A-18F , having found the courage to "open up" the engine bays thanks to your book.) I traditionally am a great starter, but interest all to often dwindles with large kits, but with your book as a guide, each section of the plane is like a seperate kit and the logical format of your book drives me to keep going with genuine enthusiasm. Would there be interest in other US NAVY types? I'm thinking A-6 & EA-6B. Whilst I know these s
  11. Why not run a poll / sweepstake? Which will come out 1st? a) trumpeter 1/32 A-6 intruder b ) Academy 1/48 F-4B c) neither of the above? Concerned that with the world predicted to end sometime end of 2012, that both release dates will be in 2013 <_<
  12. I've always wanted to do that Low Viz scheme as VF-102 on AMERICA was sort of our sister ship when she was out in the Adriatic in 93 & 95. How are you making the decals? My mate was lucky enough to get on board for the day & i have some non-digital phots taken from AMERICA of these birds flying.
  13. Oct 2010 USS Enterprise during C2X (Air Wing One embarked): Hornet had just trapped, taxied back and was waiting to be spotted at aft end (just awaiting final a/c to land during that 'event' - hence held behind "foul line". Subsequently shut down at aft end (= with tow bar attached) and launched approx 90 mins later during next 'event'. Aircrew hosted by VMFA-251 (the Marine Sqn embedded in Air Wing One). An unusual visitor none-the-less!
  14. I've obviously missed something here. I tend to use Car Auto accessory sprays decanted (in the UK Halfords Appliance White) which I spray into a small cup, then “tip†into my airbrush. If I DON’T spray this paint within a few minutes it begins to cure and ultimately I end up spaying “silly string†of dried paint out the airbrush. I was unaware that “decanted†spray paint could be kept (air tight container? – or does this not allow the gases to escape) without drying. Is this problem with dangerous gases limited to certain types of canned paint o
  15. I saw a marine "D" trap & remain on deck until the next event launch (90+ mins later) on the Enterprise in Oct 2010. i understand that, although rare for a "D", any deck that is operating within range of the beach is used as often as possible to help keep the skills up to date. So as the ship was en-route from Norfolk to the Florida coastline a VMFA(AW)-533 low viz bird came out. I can post a couple of phots at the weekend on this thread if interested? So the staff answer is “No†they don’t embark, but will occasionally keep the deck warm on an opportunity basis. The oth
