beingthehero
Really hope this is sarcasm. Old has been paints being discontinued isnt a big deal. There are far better choices available. I still have a moment of silence in memory of PollyScale... :(/> But yeah I more or less only use AKAN nowadays, or Vallejo when it comes to figures. mawz
Sorry to hear that paint in the mail is hard to do. But at least it sounds like there are still shops around up there. In our case the US hobby shop is getting harder and harder to find. I have to either source paint from one of our distributors or mail order a specialty brand. I'm extremely lucky, Toronto is pretty much heaven in terms of LHS's. We've got two of the best Model Railroad shops on the continent (Credit Valley Railway Co and George's Trains), multiple excellent scale plastic shops (including Wheels and Wings, again one of the best shops on the continent) and multiple excellent RC shops. And there's enough crossover between lines that all of those shops are worth visiting even for a specialist (as someone active in all three hobby segments it's wonderful). The only downside? All of the above had consistent issues getting paint from companies other than Tamiya or Testors. Vallejo's the easiest of the others, but they still have some issues. George's Trains even started their own paint line because of this (Proto-Paint, soon available continent-wide from Rapido).
RCAFFAN
http://www.elmcityhobbies.com/shop/ For those looking for Vallejo in Canada. You do realize that that store is over 4,300 kilometers from my house whereas at least one local store carries three different racks of Vallejo products but thanks for trying.... Mawz stated that he had issues getting it so the link was for him. If you need it and cant get it local its an option. I order stuff from Redstar and Hobbyworld both of which are between 800 and 1700 miles from me, depending on the shop. Oh and you're welcome.
Paul Boyer
So they discontinue Voodoo Grey right when we are get revell to re-release 2 seat Voodoo's and there are rumblings of a 1/48 2 seater (new tool)... Well, for RCAF Voodoos, yes. USAF birds were painted in FS 16473. But Canadian Voodoo Gray is also "Boeing Gray" used on things like E-3 Sentry AWACS (overall) and on things like wing-root fairings on Boeing airliners (and maybe others). IrishGreek
Paul, I didn't know that the Canadian color was also called Boeing Gray. Thanks for that info! Love this site!
Scott Smith
NASCAR models don't use those colors. Plain and simple. As mentioned above, they are in just about every hobby shop across the country and car models are the bread and butter of the industry. The more I use Acrylics, the more I dislike my old enamels I grew up with. I just stocked up on 6 or 8 bottle of Gloss Gull Gray for all my Navy kits in the stash needing this color. I'm regretting that decision now after getting the hang of Acrylics. My local Hobbytown USA only stocks the MM and Tamiya paints. I guess we are going to have to get use to ordering paints now too. If anything, I think these decisions will hurt the LHS more that it hurts us. Either they have to start up a whole new line of paint or suffer with less walk in's. Around here car models are the poor stepchild of the market. Planes and Armour dominate. Only one local store even carries a decent selection of cars (and mostly because there's a couple dedicated car guys on staff). Of course, up here in Canada motorsports are not nearly as popular as in the US or Europe.
eraucubsfan
NASCAR models don't use those colors. Neither do the Foose-mobiles.
Paul Boyer
Paul, I didn't know that the Canadian color was also called Boeing Gray. Thanks for that info! Love this site! It's actually a color that matches FS 16515. Apparently the RCAF preferred this color over the USAF FS 16473. Boeing also likes this color for some of its assemblies. So it's a coincidence rather than an alternate name. Before Testor bottled it, I'd never heard the term "Canadian Voodoo Grey." I doubt the RCAF calls it that.
Johnopfor
I still have a moment of silence in memory of PollyScale... :(/>/> But yeah I more or less only use AKAN nowadays, or Vallejo when it comes to figures. The irony is that Testors is the reason why PollyScale paints no longer exist. They did adapt a lot of the PollyScale colors into the MM line, but a lot of those colors were just axed by Testors. I haven't switched over from MM enamels because they easy for me to get here, and I'm already well invested in the line....it's too expensive for me to switch over at this point. scotthldr
Guys, modeling is dead as we know it. Aweful news :crying2:/> Unfortunately he has a point. With companies quick to discontinue popular and widely used paints, manufacturers charging through the nose for new kits, Postal services Worldwide clamping down on what can and what can't be sent through post, then charging extortionate prices, it's getting harder and harder to pursue the hobby.
