Lockheed MC-130H Combat Talon II, scale 1/72

Recommended Posts

This is the start of the build of a Lockheed MC-130H Combat Talon II.

In addition to my own parts, I also use the Flightpath conversion kit for the Talon II. Flightpath states that the kit can be used for Italeri and Zevzda. However, the nose dome does not fit on the Zevzda fuselage. It is much too wide. What to do? The only option is to cut the nose in half and sand the two halves to size. When measuring, I discovered that the dome is 3 mm (.118 '') too short. This will now simply be extended. In case I mess up the dome when cutting it, I have made a mold. This way I can make a new dome.

Oh yeah baby, this is gonna be cool ! Definitely following this one. Interested in seeing what you come up with for the refueling pods.

Here's a "freshly converted" 130H to a MC-130W, 90-0162, I photographed at my base, the former NAS JRB Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, back on May 19, 2007. She was headed to the 27th SOW / 73rd SOS at Cannon AFB.

Thanks for adding the pics, Steve. I thought that the W-version has a normal nose dome and larger FLIR.

Yes, the refueling pods will be a challenge.

Best,

Jost

WOW, outstanding job on all the lumps, bumps and, antennas Jost. Some appear to be metal, are those lead castings ?

Thanks Steve.

Yes, there are a few metal parts out of the Flightpath conversion for the Talon II. I was  not so happy with the quality of the kit and only used a few parts of it. I was thinking of making my own but was to lazy.

Specifically the strengthening bands

Hi,

I used 0,25 mm (.010“) for the plates and side bands. For the fwd upper fuselage 0,16mm (.0065“)

Sanded all a bit with 400 and 800 grid especially the edges.

Cheers

I love the small details!

What scheme will you paint on this Talon? The modern two-grey or the older "Lizzard/Europe One"?

Thanks.

Scheme will be the two-tone grey.

The Europian One will be on the next one.

Lookin good! I flew the T2 as a Lockheed employee here at Kirtland. The old girl gained

a lot of weight. When they put the hose pods on and other associated equipment the

operating weight was around 102,000 pounds. Max takeoff was 155,000 so it really limited

the payload it could carry.

Cheers...Ron

Here too, work will continue after the summer break. Since I want to build a few more Hercs, I bought a set of Eduard wheels and cast them. That saves some time. The model was prepared for the paint application and then sprayed. I masked off the walkways and then sprayed them on, because the ones from the Italeri kit are not the size of the Talon II. Most of the decals are self-made, some are from the Italeri kit of the MC-130E Talon I.
