  1. Cool photos, you are very fortunate to be able to see all those cool Russian airplanes. I saw my first Soviet (at the time) planes at the 1986 Abbotsford Air show, and Mig-29's at the 1989 one. That year they also flew the AN225 at the show. However one of my most memorable displays was at te 1991 Abbotsford Air show when the SU-27 flew. The pilot (sorry his name escapes me) put on simply a jaw dropping show, maybe the best demo in a fighter jet I ever saw, with the exception maybe of the days when Maj. Bob Wade and Capt Nowzad were CF-18 demo pilots (mid 80's) The flight displays the
  2. Well we can hope that the govt. sees the value of such an investment spread out over time as wiser than trying to keep planes to old in flying shape. In reality it is not too much of a request as the money will be amortised over a good period of tme. I'd say that in reality these possibilties have a better chance today with the Federal Govt. having books in the black now for many years, than say 10 years ago when we had huge deficits. I 'd also say one must add the fact that the govt. wants Canada's military compliment to foreign policy, working with the UN and NATO among other gro
  3. The Blues will be staying with the legacy F-18 varient for a long time. If they were to change anytime soon I'd suggest it would be going to the T-45. If the F-35 pans out, maybe in 10-15 years the Blues may go to it.
  4. There has been some talk, but nothing has really progressed. There was talk of using CF-18s, but that would be very expensive. Same thing with the Harvard 2 and the Hawk....both are expensive options...there was even talk that if the Snowbirds went with, say, the Hawk, then the number of aircraft flying in the teams shows would have to be cut nearly in half. There has also been talk of outright cutting the team all together...which would be a shame, because the Snowbirds are a true Canadian institution....they are Canada in my mind. I hate the thought of losing the team. CF-18 wou
  5. I heard on the news that two planes touched causing the missile rail to fall off and into Lake Michigan. No injuries, but of course an investigation is in order. I take it as just an incident and not likely to be anything serious.
  6. Cool video. The camera man was a little lame at times but it did show what thrust vectoring could do. Don't want to go up and do that afte downing a few shots of Vodka though The Mig29 was already great plane in maneuvering, thrust vectoring makes it better yet. I wonder if the Russians plan on adding this varient to their force structure or will it possibly be only offered as an export bird?
  7. It does seem to be this incident as the terrain looks very much like the area around CFB Moose Jaw. You can see as the plane turns away the town in the distance and it is very flat terrain. The pitot tube does seem to match that of a CT-155.
  8. As noted here, the Corsair would have probably been very similar to the P-47 in how it would have fought in ETO. I think the Corsair would have flamed many a German fighter. It had speed, range, toughness and good fire power. It handled itself against very good Japanese fighters and I think it would have done very well against the German fighters.
  9. Neither team will switch any time soon. Way down the road maybe both will switch to F-35. But IMO more likely going back to a trainer type jet such as a T-45 Goshawk. As with even in the USAF paring down to fewer and fewer combat jets, the fact that trainers cost less and less to upkeep. I can see both going to such planes many years down the road. But it's just my 2 cents. Don't bite my internet head off ;)
  10. The Blues have as noted previously travelled abroad often. Europe, Canada, Cent America, Asia etc. They were documented on film a number of years ago in a Eurpoean tour includingf Russia and the East Bloc nations. They have been to Abbotsford, Canada 9 times if I recall correctly. The Thunderbirds are as well travelled as noted by the flags on their airframes. They have been to Abbostford, Canada 8 times if I recall correctly. Unfortunately for non-North Americans. The Snowbirds have not left the continent as the Tutor lacks the range to do such and cannot be air refueled. One day w
  11. Bunz, The problem is that threads of the likes of this will degenerate into the proverbial pissing match. F-14 lovers will defend their favourite ( notice I said favourite plane as a fact that it skews their POV ) Hornet be they legacy or Supers will be defended until the death by their lovers as favourites. Logic and realities are imparted and discarded at whim by anyone who is too devout in lust for their favs. So the discussion turns to an argument. I tried in my previous post to settle things by stating it does not matter what, where and how a Super Hornet is better or worse than
  12. To sum it up here. The F-18E/F is now and will be for along time the main combat platform of the US Navy. It nolonger matters which is better ( as if such can be clearly defined anyways ) between the F-14 and F-18E/F. The Tomcat is on its last legs, nothing comes from debating such here anymore. As for F-18E/F vs SU-30, two remarkable planes among a host of others from other countries and militaries. The end result would likely come down to numbers in the engagement, who has the better real time picture and the better air crews.
  13. Stuff like this and from other cool posters here is one reason why I like dropping by. The cool stuff you learn here even if at times trival from others who know or have real world experience is great. The ability to comfortably share info with others is also cool. I enjoy my av books and magazines, and searching other stuff on the web. I like av shows on t.v. But the spontaneous responses to the many varied questions from people here is great. Be you a well informed aviation fan and hobbiest and of course all those here who are in the forces, comercial and the industry.
  14. The results are as expected. The bike easily walks away until it reaches into heavy drag due to the shape of the bike and rider probably around 140mph. It has a top speed of about 175mph, the Porsche eventually passes it and of course by the end the jet will win. The best thing is that the jet did pass em both before it hit rotation. So figuring that it rotated at around 150mph. In the end it was champ. The bike did let up once the jet passed him and thusly the Porsche blew by him. Which in the end the Porsche would because it is more aerodynmaic than the bike and rider/combo.
  15. I've seen the Snowbirds perform every year except one since 1970. They are a fantastic demo team. The Tutor is a great jet for them, however in time they will need to move from the Tutor. It is going to be a while though. However my bets are that one day funding will come through to move to the CT-155 Hawk. Or some other varient of such. Hell I'd even be ok with finding some lower hours used Hawks as long as the Forces can keep em serviced within budget. I've seen the Blue Angels in F-4's, A-4's and F-18's. Thunderbirds in F-4's, T-38's and F-16's. Frecce Tricolorie in 1986 at the Abb
  16. Talk about lucking out. My dad is one who enjoys going around various consignment and second hand stores always looking out for odds and ends. Well to my surprise he picked up a heavy duty industrial type fan that would retail for around $100 for all but $4.00.... It's like the fan in the FSM building a spray booth article of a few years ago. Now I have a good reason to build a real quality airbrushing spray booth... It just goes to show that bargain hunting can pay off. About 8 years ago he found at a garage sale a hobby style compressor that would be about $150.00+ for only $15.00. &
  17. Good for her. Hey if females can fight in war, they should be able to fly in demo teams. Recently (2001) the Snowbirds had a female demo pilot, Captain Maryse Carmichael.
  18. Yes, esp. the sound of a HOWLING 104.
  19. CF-104 in Tiger meet colours, flying over Germany. Cool close in pass shot of a CF-104.
