Airfix Nimrods in the shops in UK

Recommended Posts

Try sbxmodelshop .. free shipping worldwide.. ( unlike hannants ) works out cheaper too

Free shipping is great, if they actually have anything in stock. After trying a few searches, from what I could see on their web site they do not offer a fraction of what Hannants offers or has in stock ready to ship.

Other than the "free shipping", their prices were no different than Hannants (at least on the few items I could find that I am looking for).

I think I'd sooner pay the shipping and get everything I want all in one box.

Just for everyone's information . I ordered my Nimrod at Hannants and they charge half the price of the kit (!) for shipping it across the Channel .

If I could do things over, I'd surely buy from SBX .

So people : better think twice before ordering !

Julien,

Being as you're the first to claim ownership and have actually fondled plastic, you have been elected to do the in-box review and post pics of it.

"No" is an unacceptable answer.

I shall expect your posting in 24 hours or less.

:deadhorse1:

Rusty,

I had a fondle the other day but dont get my hands on it as It was too large for me to carry home on the bus (with the other stuff I got at the same time) so I will only be picking it up at the club Tuesday Night.

I will try and get pics out if no one has done them by then.

Julien

Be my guest ... He has never let me down .. unlike hannants . His shop has more stock that actually shows on website . You could always e-mail him an order . Then again if you want to waste money on shipping rather than having another kit or two , i know what i would do.

The kit is pretty impressive, especially when one considers the variable quality of Airfix kits over the years. It's not quite up to the standards of the 48th Lightnings but it's crisply moulded, good engraved detail and pretty accurate in shape.

There are some minor bits which might benefit from improvements such as the wing tips and the fin-top fairing but nothing serious. The only area I'm not too thrilled with is the clear piece for the flight deck - the windows are set-back slightly but the moulding isn't too sharp and it also has the windscreen wipers moulded-in - not good. Personally, I think I'll clean-up this area and mould a new clear piece as a replacement. Some people have actually complained that the seats don't have arm rests... I kid you not!

Otherwise, I guess the only improvement would be an etched sheet for things like the reverse thrust loeuvres which would be much nicer in a metal mesh, and maybe new vortex generators on the wings (they're a bit over-scale), plus other minor bits and pieces. A detailed weapons bay would be nice but it's hardly vital if you simply leave the doors closed.

I've seen a lot of fuss on another site about the decal sheet and it isn't all that great - good artwork but it's badly printed. Pity, as the thickness and the glossy finish is quite good. However, I don't know why people are obessing about the print quality - the stencils are good enough to use and I would think any modeller would have plenty of national insignia in their spares box to replace the kit sheet examples.

In short, I think it's an excellent kit! I will certainly be looking forward to the Meteor F8, the Hawks, the Canberras (in both scales) the Valiant and the lovely (still secret) release scheduled for next year. Let's hope Hornby's enthusaism continues!

I got one yesterday and would echo most of the above comments. I'll be building XV260 so I've ordered the Model Alliance sheet for that airframe, but as far as the kit decals go mine look very good. However using them shows that the whites are translucent and there are extensive areas of carrier film that go beyond the varnish coat around each design - strange!

The seats do have armrests - they're in the "up" position!

Just to let you see what the Nimrod kit looks like, crisp mouldings, with plenty of details and weapon load,I know some were dissapointed with the lack of detail in the bomb bay but with a full weapon load in you wont see much. Painting instructions are full colour and the decal sheet is very comprehensive though it looks a bit thick and glossy.

Main airframe assembled ,masked and primed just waiting for the airbrush and a tin of hemp.Very easy build with only a couple of minor problems (I think caused by me) that needed a touch of filler.

As you can see, it's pretty impressive. I'm fairly sure the fin-top fairing is just a little bit too bulky from some angles, but that's something you could fix quickly or simply ignore. The only disappointing bit is the clear glazing which could be better. Hopefully someone will produce a better replacement piece - if not I'll make my own. As has been said, the mould was made by Trumpeter and they've done a commendable job on it.

Engineman, the Valiant is on its way; it's been rumoured for a long time and now it appears to be in the schedule. The next big release after that is equally impressive but I don't think they want it broadcast to the world just yet, but there's no doubt that Airfix/Hornby are on a roll!

Now all I'm waiting for, is to see who tries making a Comet out of it! Not as difficult as it looks really - remove the panier, cut-down and re-contour the undersides of the engines and intakes, and you're pretty much there!

I hope you are correct and they are going to do what I consider to be a underated historically significant , and beautiful V-bomber.

I hope they stick with great British subjects perhaps a VC-10 in 72?

my 2 cents

Oh that would be great. I heard a rumour that the big secret project for next year was a VC10 in 1/72. Well this is a rumour network isn't it? Oh no, wrong site! Come on Airfix, you know you want to! Afterall with the £1 Billion savings in next year's UK Defence budget the VC10 is going to be in service until 2014........ 2015 ....... Any advance anybody? Perhaps the Mighty 10 will make its 50th birthday in RAF service.

Sorry. Slightly off topic.

They might be doing just that - but then again they might not be. I'm sayin nuthin until somebody else does! But regardless of that particular subject, Hornby are clearly throwing a lot of money into an ambitious programme - good luck to them say I - the Nimrod was certainly a great start!

We already know what the next Airfix limited edition "biggie" will be, the 1/48th scale TSR2. I would imagine that any decision on other large and specialist subjects will depend on a thorough examination of the numbers generated by that and the Nimrod.

noo, we're talking about next year, not this year! Who would have thought that such an encouraging situation would exist?! :o
