nikosmeta
Hi all I am building a Prowler of the VAQ-132 and I want to tint the canopy gold. What is the safest way to do it? Thanks Nikos Edited May 13, 2014 by nikosmeta
viper730
Try some Yellow Transparent tint. Spray it on the inside....I'd use an acrylic based paint like Tamiya or Vallejo...
kmk
Look for Alclad paint, there perfect for tinting canopys http://www.megahobby.com/alcladiitransparentlacquersforairbrushingonly.aspx Succes Rudi
metroman
I used Alclads Titanium Gold AFTER a future coat was fully cured. I know, I know - never a 'hot' paint over a delicate surface, but with mist coats it was fine, especially (thanks to the future) when I got it too dark the 1st attempt - with ammonia the future came off with the gold in tow. 2nd attempt much lighter, one pass and it looks great. Whichever route you pick leave the windscreen clear...
David C Moore
This is my first post here at ARC, so I hope I am doing it correctly! I come from the dark side of car builders, and one of the tricks for tinting windscreens was to use clothing dyes. In the States, you can use RIT dye, and basically follow instructions like you were going to dye some clothes. The nice thing is that if it doesn't come out dark enough, you can re-dye it numerous times. I do not remember the exact article, but it was in either Scale Auto or Car Modeler along time ago. ikar
Our "A" models at Korat had the gold canopies. But you could only see the gold show when you were really close, say, 8-10 feet. Otherwise they lookedlike any other piece of canopy plastic.
dehowie
Afv club have released only recently some canopy tint film. Gold i think might be one of the colors. Check LM they have it for pre order or in stock..

I've tried this on some spare canopies myself so I know this for sure.

Crystal clear with a hint of gold.
Vodnik
NO it did not. Well, I had these same results as Fly-n-hi, so I'd be very careful with technique.
ilGamma
hi Nikos! The best way, in my opinion, is Future + drawing inks (windsor&newton). I used this "potion" oh my Prowler. Reflection ad darkness depending by light another example on my Growler (only on windshield) and last, on Phantom windshield, to reproduce reflection of thickness glass (only a drop, just to see with a light condition) Hope you help! Ciao! Carmine

otis252
That Future+Windsor & Newton tinting looks great. What shade color did you use for the Prowler? Mixed it up and dipped the canopy? Chuck
dehowie
Agree those inks look very authentic the Prowler canopy is outstanding. Well done..
nikosmeta
Thanks all of you for the answers. I think I will go with ink and future. What was the color of the ink and in what was the % of the mixture?
