  1. 1. Will you participate in a Skis and Floats, Anything But Wheels GB

Recommended Posts

This GB is prompted by the Vintage Wings great article, Skis and Floats, Anything But Wheels. While this highly recommended article focused on combat aircraft, military trainers, and transport aircraft, this GB will include any aircraft, fixed wing or rotary, any scale, that had/has floats or skis, even if just under a test program, like the F4F-3S Wildcatfish. This is a great opportunity to do something unique, like a P-38 on skis, or perhaps something as ubiquitous as a Beaver or Otter on floats.

Vince14 and I will be the mods.

As Vince14 noted, purpose-built aircraft or bolt-ons to land-based aircraft are just fine.

The F4F-3S I'm building now has (permanently mounted) floats along with beaching wheels. That would be just fine except it's well underway now. I've got an R3C-2 in the stash that I'd likely build...and endow with an actual cockpit.

Some 'air'craft have skirts, no wheels and they float would they qualify, along with being full of eels?

Are you asking about a hovercraft? I don't think that would be a good fit.

But, how about an Ekranoplan? That would work for me!

is there even a model of that? I don't think I've ever looked, but that would be awesome on the shelf.

Both are available as static kits.

The only hovercraft I'm aware of is the Airfix 1/144 SR.N4.

As for Ekranoplans, both Revell and Zvezda offer an injection molded 1/144 A-90. I built the Revell a few years ago. The Zvezda is only a year or two old; I read that it's a new tool. Anigrand offers 1/144 resin models of the Alexeiev Lun Ekranoplan as well as the Alexeyev KM Ekranoplan. The A-90 is a large 1/144 model; the Alexeiev's are huge!

Yes sir, I'm talking hovercraft. But since it technically doesn't 'fly' I can see your point. Ok back to wings+skis or floats.

I would like this GB.

I think for me there would be a couple of options.

First would be the C-130 float plane seen in Resident Evil Code: Vernoica X

Its basically a C-130 with some floats on the wings.

I would like to do it in 72nd scale but 144 might be how it turns out as I have always wanted to build a scale model of Rock Fort anyway (Im a Res Evil fan)

If not that then I would go for one of the big WWII German sea planes

Now we just need a Pilatus Porter with skies...or at least a AM Ski set! That would be awesome...Those planes landing and starting on glaciers, bringing first aid and transport, etc.
