  1. If they're not the pre-painted type you can heat the parts with a falame to anneal the metal- it becomes verry bendable. I have a small butane jet-type lighter that heats 'em red hot in no time at all.
  2. Could you stick the camera up against one of those rear fuselage windows? I wanna see the toilet and the Life magazine by it. That's a great lookng build-cheers!
  3. Do it until you like it. Then you'll be happy. Isn't that what's important in a hobby? That said: don't use straight black to fill panel lines, and use highly dilute darkened tones of the base coat to post-shade. I don't give a rat's patoot about trends and contests and what Opinion McGee will say about my model- i just enjoy myself. Oh, and I think shaded panel lines are pretty neat, for the rcord!
  4. Are the Paragon sets stills being produced?
  5. I'd do it before- why stress the nose joins? Good luck!
  6. Hey, thanks, guys! It IS an awesomew subject, with triumph and tragedy aplenty in it's history. Whoa, Randy- you actually moved the hawser? 8-O! I'm confident the whole pressure hull will be a mysterious facter in the kit- I'll display it at an angle that will showcase it to the max. Lookit that single-barrel blob o' bits, Holesot- that's for the lower rear hull. You guys are da best- I'll post more as soon as I can!
  7. I've been toiling away at my Revell 1/72 U-Boat. Got really familiar with the grinding accessories on the ol' Dremel clearing out every little hole in the hull- this really is a submarine with screen doors! I'm adding the Yankee Modelworks pressure hull. It's a nice casting, but not without it's flaws. Seen from above, the piping on the center and rear sections does not match up! It's not quite the "drop-in fit" that's advertised- I had to do a fair amount of guesswork to position it, and then lots of foamcore board to cover the gaps at the sides. Gobs of hot-glue stuck the filler in.
  8. Man, that's swank! Do you have any photos of the starboard side "revised girl? I've never seen a pic of it....
  9. What can I say that hasn't been said before? A stunning model of a favorite subject. Cheers!
  10. It's basically the same as airplane dope- thin it with dope thinner!
  11. Prismas are a better quality brand of colored drawing pencil. Make sure you use them on a matt surface, as they need some "tooth" to apply to the surface.
  12. I can confirm- both flattened and round.
  13. I think Koster might make 'em- try Great Models http://www.greatmodels.com/ The Monogram H-20 kit had them as well.
  14. Your skills are amazing! I'm particulrly inspired by the "trueness" of your angles- everything is plumb and square where it needs to be. Cheers!

    He-111H info sought

You need the Japanese publication Aero Detail 18 Heinkel He111- it's a walkaround type of book, with one of the three aircraft featured being an H-20/R1, a feature of the Battle of Britain Hall, RAF Museum at Hendon. Plenty of detail shots! The book also features scale drawings, detail sketches, etc on all variants, as well as a few color schemes. ISBN4-499-22670-8 c0076 p2987E You'll have a fair amount of mods to change the Monogram 1/48 kit to a true H-20, but it can be done. Good luck, and keep us posted!
  16. Planes shipped out on the decks of ships had all their seams tapes over at the factory (right up the road from me in Hawthorne, CA) to seal 'em from sea air and corrosion. Problem was that the tape pulled the paint off upon removal! The results look like patchy stripes of bare metal on some planes, but most were touched up with fresh paint- often crudely, by hand with a house painting brush! The base coat faded badly in sun on the crossing so the touch-up paint stood out pretty strongly. The Squadron In-Action book is a good ref, as is Warbird Tech Vol 15, Northrop P-61 and F-15 by MBI, an
  17. You made me pull out my copy of the trainer version- I'm looking at quite a project, but with real potential. Great build!
  18. That's looking pretty good so far, Barto! For those wheels, I might try mounting a thick oversized disc on a piece of music wire, chucking in the Dremel and shaping it with files and sanding sticks. Using a circle template, check often to make sure you don't sand it too small. Add the hubs last form slices of rod. Yours don't look too shabby, tho- and as you've said, the originals were crude!
  19. Thanks, fellas! Spruemeister- she's all packed up in a block of foam and on her way to the pilot right now. Spitfirelad- you may notice that she's missing some other areas of scale fidelity as well- like no exhauts!
  20. My pal Gus brought me this kit and asked if I'd slap it together for his grandpa, who flew bent-wingers with the U.S. Marines in The Big One. Gus served with that austere body in the first Gulf War. Could I say no? No add-ons here- I just rescribed the raised panel lines on the fuselage. Wings and tail were recessed! The fit's not bad for a kit that's been around for longer than dirt The fabulous landing gear braces were not half long enough, so I replaced 'em with plastic rod. Decals came from an ancient sheet by Modeldecal- kit's insignia were used. U-rah!
  21. Very nice- Luftwaffe twins rule!
  22. Fixed the links- bloody tags... Mike T.: I enjoyed (on and off) about two years on her (so to speak) with other projects rolling through- work, freelance work, house work, family work... :) I'll be finishing another modelling project this weekend.... knock on wood! Something profoundly simpler- I'll post pics.
  23. That's looking great- I've got the same stuff except for the Flasback set. I'll have to look that up. Are you happy with it?
  24. Thanks, David- I was cross-eyed when posting this late last night. I'll have to check that bomb bay pic from home- it worked in the preview last night.... That interior pic shifted really green- it's RLM grey 02. If only I'd added a little lip of styrene to the fuselage that #@%$$ canopy wouldn't have fallen off twice! I masked it three times, btw... :D
