  3. Seems like the Buffalo would be a relatively simple replacement. Fairly small purchase (10-12 aircraft?) and no shortage of twin engine turbo props of similar performance between tactical transports and commuter aircraft to choose from. They could even replace the Buffalo with the Buffalo since someone has bought the type certificate and is offering new build aircraft. That is more of what I thought. With something like 20 nations using the Sea King as well as commercial users flying the S-61, and 3 or 4 licensed manufacturers it is hard to believe all were built within a short 10-15 year t
  4. That is why I was thinking a "basic" category would be a good replacement. It could be clearly spelled out what skills could be applied, rather than the current OOB which leaves things such as finishing techniques relatively unmentioned, and simple but "outside the box" techniques are prohibited. Personally I don't think a heavily weathered model really fits the intent of OOB but I believe is acceptable under the rules, while snagging a couple of drop tanks out of another kit (very simple and well within the means of almost any builder), is not allowed under current OOB rules.
  5. Don't actually do this though. I made that mistake as a kid. I didn't have any weights so I filled the nose with Squadron Green Putty and melted the nose off. I was thinking that in the other OOB thread. I think it is time to replace the OOB category with a basic builder category explicitly stating what techniques are allowed rather than relying specifically on which kit is being built and a list of exemptions (example being complex aftermarket decals ok, but a very simple kit bash or aftermarket conversion is not).
  6. Pretty much this But also agree with this, I don't buy a model for the box art so I'm just fine with bagged kits, blister packs or a plain box so long as the parts don't get mashed in transit and I can see what I'm getting (available building and decal options).
  7. and we have the sound stage to prove it. ;)
  8. Ok, when I think Mig-21 Vs. I think F4 Phantom, not F-104 so I was a bit confused. I'm not that familiar with the F-104 in international service, but I can see how both were aimed at the same market segment on opposite sides of the Iron Curtain. Both aircraft are on my build someday list, so I tossed in a yes vote.
  9. Oh, where to start, where to start???? See you in a week or so.
  10. Sorry more of a rhetorical question. Understand at this point the Sea King is out of production so something new must be found, although I did not realize that production ended so long ago. My comments were really looking at short sightedness of letting it go out of production when it did the job so well for so many. If production ended in the 70s then it must really have been one heck of an initial rash of orders, I would have guessed they were still turning out new aircraft into the 90s. Wow so even the baby S-61s are pushing 40 years old.
  11. Understand there is a time where it makes sense to update to an entirely new airframe, but I am still a bit baffled at the need to replace the Sea King with anything but an updated and new build Sea King. It was well designed for the job it was asked to do, and don't see how upgraded avionics and engines would not make it continue to be a very capable helo for long overwater missions. The EH-101 has very similar capabilities, and the CH-148 is actually a bit less capable although a tad faster. Neither seem to offer major improvements and clearly do not have the long proven history of the S-61.
  12. Is their a connection between the two aircraft other than being able to spell Star(fighter) - Fish(bed)?
  13. It is annoying but essentially harmless adware. Just a stupid program that highlights words of interest in its programming and creates little links for you to follow. Most malware programs will hunt them down and kill them for you. Malwarebytes is a pretty decent one and has a free version you can download. Works well against much nastier ones as well.
  14. I spent 3 weeks on the Big Island in 2010, only changed planes on Oahu so just saw Pearl Harbor from the air. The Big Island was awesome, but seems to me of more interest if you want to be outdoors hiking, camping, day trips etc. Really amazing place with a huge variety of microclimates. We stayed in Volcano Village which is in a rainforest and what I always imagined Hawaii being like. We were less than a 30 minute drive from Volcano National Park much of which looked a lot more like the high desert of Nevada (still very cool, but nothing like I expected on Hawaii). I got to travel around t
  15. That is because you are an adult, and a generally classy guy.
  16. and motels. I think they have an arrangement with all the big chains.
  17. Would also be interested to see the numbers if you remove sport aircraft including "home builts" such as the one John Denver was flying when he died. Much lower level of oversight because they are restricted in performance and passenger capability (pilot only I believe). Of course at the moment GM is recalling 20 million autos after years of denial that they had a problem, so not exactly an aviation only problem.
  18. I agree with Joe. OOB except for (insert 3 page list of aftermarket bits) is silly, but OOB except for one or two aftermarket / scratch built / kit bashed items outside of a contest setting doesn't bother me in the slightest. It is a handy shorthand to say most of this is what you get in the kit.
  19. To finish every kit in the stash. As my purchases outnumber my completions most years, I have concluded that the only possible option is to live forever.
  20. Got an update on the Boomerang too. The fit on this one is much worse than the Buffalo, but still a workable kit as long as you take your time and dry fit everything. While checking colors I found out that the early Boomerangs used approximations of RAF colors, while later aircraft used RAAF colors similar to but generally darker than the RAF Dark Green and Dark Earth. As this was a later production aircraft it appears the correct colors for this aircraft were the RAAF standards. I used Polyscale's RAAF colors Foliage Green, Earth Brown and Sky. The underside has the worst of the fi
  21. Finally an update. Got the paint on, and starting decals. Hope to have this wrapped up by the end of the week. I'm sure this kit has been surpassed by newer kits, but I haven't found any serious issues and I can't complain about the price of these old Airfix kits.
  22. Nice to see Tamiya jumping into WW1, although a motorized kit seems rather odd, something of a throwback to their early days. Looking around a bit it there are several options for 1/35 WW1 armor besides the Emhar kits. Meng, Takom (never heard of them before today) and Roden have added some WW1 AFVs within the past few years.
  23. Ultimately price will be a deciding factor for me, but I love seeing unusual subjects like this being offered. It would be a very neat addition to my small but growing SAR / CSAR / ASR collection. Also very cool seeing more kits being designed with CAD / 3D printing.
  24. As weird as this may sound, I think this may be a case of somebody reposting from another site, not as a claim of building the model, simply saying hey this is neat check it out. The blog seems to have lifted his post from the site word for word. Why someone would do that instead of just posting a link I don't know.
