Desert Storm GB coming up soon!

Recommended Posts

Hmm, I may have to join in on this one.

I have Superscale's A-7E sheet for VA-76 & VA-46. It has the camo A-7 w/ Desert Storm across the top of hte wings. According to the instruction sheet, it says it was applied to the CAG a/c upon returning to the US after completing combat operations. Would this be an acceptable sheet for this GB? Its something Ive been wanting to build for awhile, but havent gotten around to it.

Ive also got TwoBob's Whiskeys in the Mix sheet, which I believe was a Desert Storm sheet.

As Pete said, the camo brown markings are fine, but I like the war tim mix of low vis / high vis squadron markings better :jaw-dropping:

Just a question for anyone that might know.

Would this kit, work for the decals that I have? I know absolutely nothing about A-7's, so I dont know which kits would be appropriate for this build.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...s%3DI%26otn%3D2

In case it makes any kind of difference, the BuNo of the a/c is 160552.

*edit2*

The instructions for the sheet dont list FS numbers for the colors. It calls for Desert Brown & Red Brown. Does anyone know the FS#'s, or equivalents that would be available from any of the paint manufacturers? I have access to Tamiya, Testors, Humbrol, Floquil.

Cool deal. Im hoping, but not really expecting, that auction will stay low. Im having to do my modeling on a shoe string budget right now, and cant really afford to drop 50 bucks on a kit, so that price is right up my alley right now. I can worry about getting a correct ejection seat later on.

First, yes that kit will work just fine. Just use the late ejection seat in the kit.

Secondly, Jakub's website lists 33711 and 30140 as the colors. The Hasegawa A-7E Desert Storm "Last Mission" boxing gives FS30219 and FS33531. I have no idea which colors look more right; you might want to try them out to see which looks better.

Thanks guys, that really helps out a lot.

I did a little bit of searching, and found a sheet that CAM Decals did, of this bird, in 1/32.

They suggest using 31667 for hte tan and 30233 for the brown. I guess I'll start w/ those, and see how it goes. I did a Pavehawk, awhile back in a desert storm scheme. I remember I used Tamiya for one color, and Model Master for the other. Im thinking these colors might be good for this build, as well as the Whiskey's in the Mix sheet I have.

Roy

I am going to do a Desert Storm F-15E.
F-15E from me :)
I'll be working a Boys from Syracuse F-16 and maybe I'll get that Su-24 we were all worried about done.
Cool, Count me in. How about a Hasegawa 1/48 F-14A with FTD Desert Storm Nose Art decals, just need to decide which decal option, got to have nose art though.
I hope to join with a 1/72 Hasegawa F-4G (SP markings). Not in August, but towards the end of the year, when I'm way more productive than in summer!!!

I'm thinking......

1/72 CC-137. Boeing 707 CAF 13703 or 704.

1/48 H-60 HS-3.

Some cool builds so far, guys! Lots of diversity too. I myself will start with a 1/48 Hasegawa RF-4C using Airdoc decals for a Zweibrücken bird.

Btw, I will start off with either an A-10A or OV-10D ... Maybe I will be super ambitious and build one kit per month of the GB. Does having more completed builds give you a better chance of winning draw prizes? :D

The OV-10 gets my vote!...

Well considering your status as a GB Host I think that automatically disqualifies you from the prize drawing, however if you do a decent job perhaps the gang can have a whip around for you... :coolio:

There's a storm a brewin'

Gonna be a great GB, I cant wait!

I agree!...I'm looking forward to it too!

You're right.

Twenty years ago there we signs of trouble in the Persian Gulf. Saddam was threatening his neighbor Kuwait and the UAE, but most people around the world thought that he wasn't doing more than 'sabre-rattling' or looking for economic concessions. He wouldn't actually try to make a military move, would he?

But it's all so far away, how could it really effect me, I thought, as I watched the news in the dayroom in my dorm at Torrejon AB, in Spain...

Kuwait oilfields next target for Hussein

By B.J. Cutler

Scripps Howard News Service

03 July 1990

Saddam Hussein, the Iraqi dictator with the bloodiest hands in the Middle East, has been issuing ferocious threats lately against Israel. But his next target is likely to be a fellow Arab nation - Kuwait - rather than the Jewish state.

Of course Hussein wants to go down in history as the Arab conqueror who eliminated Israel, and he has threatened to "burn half of Israel" with poison gas if it attacked Iraq.

But if Hussein employs his chemical weapons against Israel, that country will undoubtedly will respond with its arsenal of nuclear weapons, devastating Iraq's cities. Until Hussein has his own atomic bomb, which Iraq is working on, he may content himself with easier victims.

Nevertheless, no one should underestimate Hussein's ruthlessness, brutality and willingness to commit aggression. In 1980, seeing Iran in revolutionary turmoil, he attacked his larger neighbor to seize a disputer waterway and nearby oilfields.

It was a historic miscalculation, leading to an eight-year war that left 1 million dead, 1.7 million wounded and 1.5 million displaced as refugees. Hussein finally forced a ceasefire by using internationally banned poison gas against the Iranians. He also gassed his own subjects - restive Kurds.

A breif two years after his nation and people ceased to suffer immense war damage, Hussein is on the move again. He sent letters to neighboring Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, farther down the Persian Gulf, telling them to cut their oil production.

Officials who read the letters described them as ultimatums. Both countries routinely exceed quotas assigned to them by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. The import of Hussein't message was: cut back, or else.

Saadun Hamadi, Iraq's deputy prime minister who hand carried the warning to Kuwait, said the aim of the Kuwaiti and U.A.E. production decreases would be to drive the price of crude from the present $14 a barrel to $25 a barrel.

Such a boost would be an economic blow to the United States, which imports half the oil it uses, and to other oil customers. Hussein, who has a streak of paranoia in addition to other traits, thinks the two gulf states are overproducing in a plot with the United States to weaken Iraq.

The United Arab Emirates, which is hundreds of miles from Iraq, said it would not be intimidated. But tiny Kuwait, with only 2 million people and a disputer border with Iraq, is vulnerable to Hussein's pressure.

If Kuwait caves in to Iraqi pressure, it may only buy some time. History suggests that appeasing a dictator merely whets his appetite. And Hussein emerged from the Iraq-Iran war with a battle-hardened army of 1 million, which could overrun Kuwait, smaller than New Jersey, in days.

Traditionally Kuwait had a measure of security through its alliance with Saudi Arabia. However last year the Saudis signed a non-aggression pact with Baghdad, which leaves Kuwait alone in its border quarrel with Iraq.

During the bloody eight years of Persian Gulf war, Kuwait firmly backed Iraq financially, diplomatically, and militarily. As a result its oil tankers were attacked by Iran until the U.S. Navy started escorting them.

That has not stopped Kuwaiti rulers from joining radical Arab denunciations of Washington. Nor has Kuwait's war aid stopped Hussein from coveting its wealth. Apparently gratitude is rarer in the region than greed and ambition.

I got myself 3 more kits for the GB today  . Benner's F-117 inspired me to get a kit too, so I bought the 1/72 Academy kit. I also got the Hobbyboss UH-60 and the Italeri OH-58D, both 1/72.

If only you had gotten 1:48 instead ... sigh :)

I'm very tempted to join with a 1/72 F-14 but none of the kits I have includes appropriate decals.

Does anyone know of any appropriate aftermarket sheet? Or if you have leftovers from a kit let me know please, I have largely enough stencils to complete the markings :) I will do my best to do your decals justice.

Thanks and hopefully see you soon for my first ARC group build :tumble:

Check the third link on Jakub's Desert storm website http://www.dstorm.eu/pages/en/menu.html for the most part, f-14s did not carry special desert storm markings. A bash of decals to make one of the participating squadrons will do; that is pretty much what I did for one of my 1/48 Tomcat builds.
