Any Gamers in Here: Re: Blazing Angels, Squadrons of WWII

Recommended Posts

I'm not much of a gamer, but I bought a Wii 2 years ago for the fiancee and step-kids to play around with. So far, there haven't been many games that interest me as a grown-up.

I found Blazing Angels - Squadrons of WWII at Wal-Mart and thought it looked interesting for $20.

Basically it's a WWII combat simulation - heavy on the combat, not so heavy on the flight sim side of things. It's one of those all-inclusive games (meaning, they start you with the RAF Eagle Squadron, send you to Pearl Harbor, then Japan, then somehow you are a B-17 crewman as well).

So far I've completed two missions - London during the Blitz and some North African combat as an RAF flyer - Pearl Harbor being my third and next mission.

I'd definitely recommend it, although there's a bit of a learning curve for the controls, and the constant intercom chatter of your "wingmen" gets a little cheesy at times.

Anyone else play this game?

I made it to the level where you have to take out the Japanese airbase flying F-4U Corsairs. But I traded the game in for Call of Duty Black Ops. :woot.gif:

I haven't gotten there yet - is that the really hard one everyone talks about -- the Rabaul Raid or whatever?

I had Call of Duty: World at War but I found I couldn't play it around the younger step-kids, so I sold it.

This one on the other hand: Went to an arcade the other day and they had Blazing Angels as an arcade seated shooter. My 4 year old step daughter rode shotgun with me while we played, and when we got off the game after crashing, she looked at me and said: "WOW! That was just like a movie!"

I'll have to take a look for that one. I had not heard of it before.

I picked it up a few months ago, I didn't have high expectations so it was easy for the game to live up to them. It is fairly entertaining for an arcade style flight sim, with a nice variety of missions and aircraft while being simple enough to play with kids.

IL-2 for the PS3 is great!

I didn't know IL-2 was available for consoles, I'll have a look for it since my computer is getting too old and cranky to run most real flight sims. While they worked in the past, recently it just won't work with IL2, CFS2 & 3, European Air War or Mig Alley so I've not been getting my dogfighting fix.

Yeah, it is one of the few actual sims for the PS3. I remember MiG Alley!

I can't agree on IL-2 - it gave me the biggest fit trying to fly. I just wanted something I could "fly through" (no pun intended) - I play video games to relax, not wear my mind out; simply in it for the fun factor. IL-2 really wasn't fun - even on easy. Plus the aircraft selection was lousy.

On the other hand - I had a blast on heros over Europe, and it had a fantastic aircraft selection (even an He 219!!!) I can play that one a lot and not get bored or frustrated.

I could literally crash myself in IL-2 by hitting the joy stick at the wrong moment at the wrong rpm... Stupid mess like that.

I am mainly in it to play the B-17 Mission, but I'm enjoying the other ones along the way.

I'm also looking forward to "Combat Wings: The Great Battles of WWII" which I saw on Amazon yesterday, scheduled to come out for Wii in June. Looks like they took the arcade style of Blazing Angels and bumped up the graphics a bit.

The biggest bummer was seeing how nicely they rendered the B-24's in the Blazing Angels intro video, only to realize that's one of the few planes you can't get in the actual game!

My sister told me she bought this game for my dad. Didn't know there were B-17 missions in it. We got a Wii (haha) for the fam for Christmas and I'm not interested in it at all but I'll probably pick this game up.

I rented IL-2 for the PS3 a while back as I'm a huge PS3 fan and airplane as well. It was cool but tedious and if you set it on simulation realism it is impossible to fly. I've flown almost every flight sim game and even had the controls of an actual airplane on a ride once but this was ridiculous. Idk if it's the translation to the PS3 controllers or what. Maybe if you had an actual flight stick it would be easier. I've been meaning to pick a used copy of it up though just to have.

There's a new Ace Combat game coming for PS3 soon. There not much on realism side as far as the missions go but there's usually a ton of aircraft and you can fly in the cockpits and they look great. Always fun games.

Big-***-Ham on PS3!

Unfortunately, the B-17 mission is, like, Mission 19, and you have to beat all of the prior missions before you can go on that one.

It looks cool from the Youtube vids I've seen. You can bounce around between the various gun positions and then take the controls for the bombing run and flying.

I've been flying Apache for the 360 alot. VERY cool game if you like helos.

Mike

They have that on PS3 as well I believe. At least I played the demo for it. Was definitely cool. Reminded me of an old game I had on my old old computer. Think it was called "Gunship". I must have played that game for hours. It was a true sim as well as you had to take off, fly to your mission with limited ordnance, then fly back and land. I remember some missions took me hours.

The blazing angels games are pretty cool, the second one is better though. They are fun to play and easy to fly.

I like heroes over europe, another fun game. Heroes of the pacific was fun too, I played that on PS2 though.

IL-2 takes a good bit of getting used to. I hated it at first but stuck with it and got used to it enough that I could play competantly. I happen to buy IL-2 and heroes over europe the same day, played heroes for a bit and had no problem. Then I wanted to try IL-2 for a while, played it long enough to finally get used to the controls and went through half the game. When I tried to go back to heroes I couldnt fly to save my life, dont know why.

Oh, I cant remember which one of the above listed games has it, but there is a bomber escort mission. You fly a P-47 escorting B-17's, pretty fun mission. From a modelers point of view the B-17's are very accurate except that the 91st BG had red tails, not light blue like in the game.

I'm gonna have to look into combatwings when that comes out.

There was a mission I just finished in Blazing Angels where I was defending some bombers briefly so they could land. It wasn't a full escort mission and I think I was flying something other than a P-47. That sounds like a fun mission, wish I knew which game it was in, so I could buy it!

That looks like fun!

Did I miss it, or did they forget the A-10 Warthog?

Don't go by just the trailer for the aircraft that will be used in game ...

Most Ace Combat games have about 35-40 aircraft once all are unlocked ...

Then with variants and special paint schemes, it can be close to one hundred once all of those are also unlocked ...

I have that game... gave up when doing the strafing run through holland over the canals. radar stations pffft..... i found a better game with more play time and tactics was "Battlestations Pacific" on X Box 360 basically your Jap or Yank but you are in control of battleships, aircraft carriers and also aircraft, with the ability to flick between units.... thus far i have been Jap and captured the Solomans , invaded Australia and the Fijian Islands, sunk the USS Hornet and invaded and landed at Port Moresby.... on my way to Pearl Harbour next....each level can take upto 2- 3 hours if you let it!!!!... graphics are pretty good... aircraft selection in the training grounds is ok...and ok im not a pilot, but i have flown and have a fairly good idea, and always thought the zero would be a nice thing to fly, large wing surface and quite stable, and it kinda is in the game, 1/2 the time i get bored and do strafing runs and aerobatics...... lol

I picked up that one for the 360 also, it was cool at first, then I got stuck on one mission Sharks in the Water or something like that. I spent a few hours trying to beat it trying different techniques but I would always have the boats you are trying to protect get sunk. Eventually I must have figured out how to fly it and since then all the missions went smoothly. If your stuck on the same mission give me a shout I'll tell you how I beat it. Besides that one mission the rest of the game is great I hope they do another one.

cheers

Mark
