stevenichols
Hello all, here are some early pictures of a MIR build using the Revell kit with the New Ware detail set. These are pictures of work done so far on the core and Kvant modules. Edited May 2, 2012 by stevenichols
niart17
Very nice so far. I built this kit along with my daughter (her first kit) and I was pretty impressed with the details. With those photo-etch sets I could see it will turn out to be a real gem. So how much, if any of the kit has to be cut up to incorporate the detail set? I'd like to maybe tackle one for real one day. Keep posting, I look forward to seeing it finished. Bill Edited April 24, 2012 by niart17
stevenichols
Bill Thanks for the positive comments. I bet your daughter is proud of her MIR as she should be. The only part's that needed to be addressed on the core module were the e.v.a. handhold's (needing removal)that were moulded into the section were the p.e. ones would go. In the one picture where I have the solar panel mounted, the center section on the core module where the two straps are, the rectangular pieces needed a little cleaning up as they needed to be flat not raised. The hardest part of the p.e. is attaching it to the model due to the tiny footprint of the parts, hair pulling(if I had any) Here are a couple more pictures. Air2k757
It looks awesome! Inspiring. I will have to add this one to my "things to build" list.
Vince Hoffmann
Hey, that looks great! i have the Revell kit and the New Ware PE set... I'm thinking I should dig it out and give it a go after I finish my current build. The only problem i see with the Mir is that it sticks out in every direction when built, so how do you display it? Are you planning to add the shuttle as well?
spaceman
Hi, excellent work on your MIR build so far. As I can see, you love also the details like me, and the PE parts looks fantastically. They are a great addition, those your model revaluations. Keep on building in such a way.

crowe-t
Really nice work so far! What a difference with the PE parts added. I'm looking forward to seeing it finished. Edited April 26, 2012 by crowe-t
stevenichols
Mike, thanks for the encouragement. Here are a few more pictures concentrating on the solar panels and their mounts. I modified the panel mounts using aluminum tube and brass sleeves in the different modules. On the real MIR the panels would rotate to face the sun. Youngtiger1
Super work on the solar panels my friend. New Ware did awesome job with their sets. I know I need to get some of these sets. Mike
stevenichols
Pascal thanks. Mike thank you the solar panels are indeed quite a bit of work and they do indeed make the model. Steve

You know, I just came across my STS-74 pictures this afternoon while searching for reference material. That was the Atlantis flight where they took up the shuttle docking module. It looks like a pretty simple build with just the module and cradle, and the the docking port attached to the crew compartment. I'm looking forward to seeing your build, the Mir station is one of my favorite subjects.

The D.M. was added(1995) before the Spectr(1996) module and it looks like I have no other choice. spaceman
Great 3D pics, which are a big help for scratch-buildig your MIR.
Rob T
This is looking great. I never thought I would be be interested in a Mir build but this has my attention. Rob
stevenichols
Manfred, I must say this build did not start as a scratchbuilding platform for the kit, it is just a simple build highlighting Tomas' detail set. He will be using pictures of the build as a guide for the p.e. detail set on his site. The next one will however incorporate all the scratchbuilding I can muster. There is so much that can be done with the basic kit such as the thermal blanket texture on the various modules and the fidelity and lack of external details that make up each module. I'am just going to try and capture the color of the thermal blankets due to the U.V. and the outgassing of the station. I will however detail and scratchbuild the D.M., Thanks Vince :D Rob thanks, I hope I don't let you down. Some pictures of the module's Priroda, Kristall, Kvant2 and Spectr pictured in that order with the New Ware detail set applied and the fitting of the solar panels. spaceman
Hi Steve, I understand, what you want to say to me, but I don't know the original MIR Kit. The PE-Detail Kit is certainly outstanding and great and uniquely revalues your model. All well done so far, hold on tight and keep on!
crowe-t
Steve, This build is looking great so far! I can't wait to see your next build that you mentioned with the scratch building.
stevenichols
Steve, This build is looking great so far! I can't wait to see your next build that you mentioned with the scratch building. Thanks Mike, Here are pictures with most of the work done on the modules and paint on the solar panels. The 4 modules are barely pressed into their fittings and are not square. For the solar panels I used testors acryl pearl blue but it just didn't have the glittering effect or gloss of the real panel.I recently sent my wife to get me a can of Tamiya clear and by accident she brought back bought some Tamiya clear pearl glosscoat(plain clear isn't available) and it worked perfectly
K2Pete
What a treat to see an in-progress build of yours Steve. This is looking simply outstanding! Pete
