Flankerman
Finally finished the model - in the colours of the PLANAF...... Underside view showing the weapons fit. This is the same as on Trumpeter's box art - but Trumpeter don't supply the Kh-59M missiles and their associated ARK-9 designator pod..... They do include the Kh-31P missiles - but neglect to supply the correct launch pylons.... .... so the 2 X Kh-59M, the ARK-9 pod and 4 X correct pylons have to be sourced from the ICM Air-to-Surface missiles set. Thanks to Yufei Mao (Haneto) for the heads-up re the pylons and ICM missile set. This view shows the corrected fins.... Side profile... Head-on... All in all it isn't a bad kit (its the best 1:72 scale tandem two-seat Flanker currently on the market!) - but annoyingly you need to correct the too-short fins - the main distinguishing feature of the Su-30MKK/MK2 Come on Aires/Quickboost - give us some corrected resin fins..... Ken PS - The build webpage - with a few more photos - is here The In Progress thread/discussion is here
murad
that last mugshot is surely scary! great looking model there, kudos. :)
haneto
Great work as usual Ken! Congratulations! By the way, have you compared the windshield of twin seat between the single seat ones? They should be the same, but they don't look like same made by Trumpy. Because in their 1/32 ones, the single seat windshield was made differently from the twin seat ones, and just as usual, it seems Trumpy just scaled down the 3D data from 1/32 to 1/72. Maybe some areas corrected, but nit include the windshield...shame Yufei
dryguy
I agree Yufei The 2 seat flanker in 1/72 doesn't seem to have as nicely shaped windshield as the single seat version.
dryguy
Ken, 1 more flanker in your collection for me to be jealous of!!
lyn
hi ken nice well done
Sebastijan
Well done, Ken! (its the best 1:72 scale tandem two-seat Flanker currently on the market!) In what way better than Su-27UB? I guess the latter is better having (more correct, but not perfect) fins ;)
Flankerman
In what way better than Su-27UB? I guess the latter is better having (more correct, but not perfect) fins ;) Sorry - I meant it to say "The Trumpeter 1:72 scale tandem two-seat Flanker kits are, currently, the best on the market" But that's only because the Heller Su-27UB is no longer available and all other tandem two-seaters are rubbish. That isn't a ringing endorsement of the Trumpeter kits (MKK & UB) - but I guess we have to make the best of a bad job.... Ken PS - At least you get a load of spare parts with the Trumpeter kits
janman
That's a beautiful Flanker, Ken!
su27rules
PS - At least you get a load of spare parts with the Trumpeter kits Yes, a lot of spares for other Flankers!! Great work on this one Ken!!
Sebastijan
just noticed - check the side profile photo - looks like R-73 pylons are attached at wrong angle, forcing the missiles to point skywards.

Naughty Sebastijan...... "Fellow modelers....please remember that unsolicited critiques are not to be offered in the Display Case" Seriously though ... trust you to notice !!! It was actually done deliberately to check if you were on the ball..... I should have photographed it from the starboard side - it's OK there - it's because the lug on the pylon isn't seating properly into the recess on the missile. I'll go away and don sackcloth and ashes and do penance........ Ken
HOLMES
Mr Duffey, EXQUISITE Flanker.. SHE looks MEAN but GORGEOUS. The Load-out is OUTSTANDING...I like it.. BRAVO.... {And please don't put a sack-cloth over your head other wise you cannot turn out such BEAUTIFUL builds and Photos ... }
Alex Sidharta
Beautiful, Ken !!! It's just beautiful....
Supertom
Fantastic job, Ken. Did you use Gungze Sangyo 338 or Humbrol 147 for the grey? I have Humbrol 147 but it really bothers me as the photos of the 1:1 bird appears to have a blue tint to them, and I'm not sure if it's due to atmospheric or lens distortion. Even the photos you did had a blue tint (which could again come down to the blue background). Edited September 7, 2012 by Supertom

Even the photos you did had a blue tint (which could again come down to the blue background). I used Hu-147. I tend not to get too hung up over exact colour matches - unless you have access to the real thing, you have to take a match from published or internet photos. And that gives so many variables, like you mention, it isn't worth the hassle. So, it could be totally right - or totally wrong Happy Flankering Ken PS - Is your built yet - if so, what did you do about the fins?? PPS - When will someone PLEEEEEESE do a set of resin replacement fins - so I can do an Indonesian/Venezuelan/Vietnamese/Ugandan/Russian Su-30MK2.

Hi Ken, I haven't started mine yet - our club has a 90-day build contest starting on the 3rd week in September and I'm to bring the kit unassembled to present it at the meeting. I'm hoping to get some aftermarket fins too, but barring that I will probably build straight out of the box, along with a set of ICM's missiles.
tonal
Great work on your Flanker Ken, I just put this in my save folder to make sure I do a good job whenever I get back to modeling. Keep up your stellar work!! tonal

Supertom
Hi Ken, Just wanted to let you know I've started on my Su-30. The fuselage halves don't go together that well, do they?
Flankerman
I just received the Dream Models 'Su-30MKK2 conversion kit' from Hobby Easy. I ordered it on Monday 3 December, I got a confirmation email the same day, an email to say it had shipped on 5 December and it arrived this morning, Thursday 13 December. A total of ten days from order to delivery - excellent service from Hobby easy........ :thumbsup:/>/> :worship:/>/> Anyway, what you get is two new taller fins - with different sized, correct intakes, plus two hinge quadrants to display the tailerons drooped as normal, two main undercarriage fairings and inserts for the lower intakes with the correct 12 slats, rather than Trumpeters wrong 24 slats.... The new fins correct the too-short Trumpeter items - they are a tad shorter than my scratch-built ones - but mine are a probably a shade too tall anyway.... They need to be carefully cut away from the pour stubs - which is on the trailing edge where all the aerials are :woot.gif:/>/> This is an excellent correction set that is a must for anyone making the Trumpeter Su-30MKK. Ken PS - Note is says 1/48 on the label - this is wrong - they are 1/72 scale !! Edited December 13, 2012 by Flankerman
Sebastijan
Cool stuff... a definite must buy when I'll be building mine
