spellbinder99
Are there any resources of detailed pictures of the Hornet prototype, either online or recommended books? I just picked up the Hasegawa 1/32 Prototype kit and when it gets to the top of the build pile I would like to do it right. I do have over twelve years experience working on Hornets so I know what the operational version looks like but I was wondering about smaller details in the cockpit, undecarriage and such like. Rex
you might try to find Detail & Scale Volume 6 it was "Part 1" " Developmental & Early Production Aircraft" a later volume dealt with the Production aircraft Maybe it is being sold by someone on Amazon or such, it was released in 1982
Nev
The old Salamander aviation fact file on the F-18 was published in the early 80s and has lots of colour photos of the Hornet prototypes, it can be picked up pretty cheap on Amazon 2nd hand http://www.amazon.co.uk/F-18-Hornet-Aviation-Fact-File/dp/0861011139/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1361107135&sr=1-
habu2
I remember seeing lots of prototype photos in one of the old KokuFan Illustrated specials on the Hornet.
graves_09
No LEX fences, smaller ECM bump on tail, no notches in VEN, curved AOA probe. I've got a few pix of 160775 now sitting at china lake but the photo quality is low.

Incaroad
I have a bunch of shots of 160775, living and working at China Lake helps. I really don't think it represents a prototype F-18A Hornet very well though... It's in great shape with a couple tons of paint on it, it should last forever... Graves_09, when were you at China Lake? Cheers
habu2
I remember seeing lots of prototype photos in one of the old KokuFan Illustrated specials on the Hornet. Illustrated #15 p 11 is a full page, full color shot of the instrument panel of one of the prototypes. Don't know which one but the visible part of the LEX is blue. Center MFD replaced by analog gauge panel outlined in orange, several other orange bits in other areas. Lots of photos of T1, T4 & several others, both color & B&W Edited February 18, 2013 by habu2
spellbinder99
Thanks for all the help guys. I will have to chase down some books. The upside is the Hasegawa kit is meant to be a pretty accurate rendition of the prototype, so at least that is a head start. Cheers Tony

Joe Hegedus
You need to decide which specific airplane you want to build, and at what point in the development program. They didn't all necessarily look the same when built due to changes added from test results, and some changes came along at diferent times. The Hase 1/32 kit, IIRC, pretty accurately represents the number 1 FSD prototype, as it was built. For a later time, or a different jet, you may need to incorporate some or all of the mods made that bring it up to the production standard. I think that the only production mod that they didn't eventually get was the larger antenna fairings on the fins. There were a couple articles inthe old IPMS Quarterly back around 1980 or so that did an excellent job of pointing out the variations from one jet to the next. I have a copy around here somewhere. spellbinder99
Thanks guys, I will check them out at home as the work net filter does not like drop-box apparently. Anything is great as I picked up the kit last week and it really is quite nice. In answer to the question I would like to do the model as the #1 prototype at rollout, but some of the later prototypes look interesting as well. Cheers Tony
catfan
so what color is the right shade of blue for the blue gold and white hornet? i have seen every thing from the dark blue which looks like dark sea blue to a lighter blue. so should i just choose a picture and go off of that ? habu2
The document Joe linked to states: The aircraft is overall gloss white, with special dark blue (similar to FS 15042) and gold trim. Personally, I'd match it to whatever decals you're using.
