Flankerman
There are other builds elsewhere (Cyber..., Hyper etc) - but I thought I'd share my build with you... This is the fourth iteration of Amodel's 3M kit in their 'Amonster' range - the others being the earlier round-nosed 3M strategic bomber, the V-MT 'Atlant' piggy-back transport and the V-MT 'Atlant & Buran' version. This new kit is the final bomber versions - the 3MD with a re-styled nose plus other changes. I bought it in Gelendzhik, Russia - without a box, decals or instructions - but it was cheap. Without a boxtop to photograph, I had to make do with this small copy..... As with all the Amonster range, the main components are made from glassfibre resin - with some decent panel detailing.... The rest of the parts are injection moulded - loads of them on dozens of sprues. Typically Amodel, the parts are delicately moulded, but they are low-pressure, limited run, so every part has to be cleaned up..... Ken
mario krijan
It would be another masterpiece! It would be nice for me to get Il-76 cheaper than real prize in future lik You Ken! Edited May 19, 2010 by mario krijan
Flankerman
Here's what the real thing looks like - at Monino..... I decided to jump the kit instructions (thanks Jon for the photocopy ) and move on to the main wheel bays. First job is to open up the holes in the fibreglass resin - and remove the nose 'dome'...... The wheel bays are very well detailed with loads of parts making up the roof, bulkheads, pipework etc.... all very accurate... There are two 'boxes' to make - and the instructions would have you assembling them in situ - by sliding the parts down the narrow fuselage and cementing them together inside the hollow fuselage. It's all a bit too fiddly for my liking - so I am going to ignore the instructions and make the 'boxes' outside the model - and then try to slot them in place. The only trouble is, the 'roof' of each wheelbay is wider than the aperture in the fuselage - so the wheelbay 'boxes' won't fit in. I am hoping to widen the apertures, cement the wheelbays in place - and then make good the resultant gaps... Watch this space. Ken

DDC
Good timing Ken. I've just been gearing up to build my A Model V-MT Atlant. Im sure your build will be all the inspiration i need! Denzil
Flankerman
The things I do for you guys....... :D Last time I was at Monino - I stuck my head inside the wheel bays and took a few pics...... The front bay was easy - it is at head height, but for the rear I had to crawl in the grass to get inside - but once there I could stand upright - it's about the size of a small room !! Note that this is a 3MD - the other variants may differ slightly.... The front bay..... looking aft Looking up at the roof and rear bulkhead...... Starboard side wall.... Starboard side front end.... Port side.... Front bulkhead - I'm not sure what the canvas tube is - but it is directly below the upper gun turret. It looks like it covers the turret mechanism - and is a means of servicing the turret....... Amodel have got it spot on - and very well detailed, although it's all a bit fiddly - and you won't see much on the finished model anyway !!! Ken
Flankerman
The rear well.... As you can see, you have to be a contortionist to get inside.... Rear bulkhead..... Port sidewall... Starboard sidewall... Starboard side further aft... Rear bulkhead and roof.... Front bulkhead with door operating arm... Wheel bay door on the outside... Have fun..... janman
Most excellent photos, Ken! Now I only need a hobby room, more knowledge on how to work with fiberglass resin, more time, more patience - and this kit. Possible another time of the year than summer might help a bit too. Flankerman
The rear wheelbay 'box' is done....... The 'arch' at the bottom holds the mounting axle of the undercarriage 'truck' - and it should be possible to slide the arch (and wheels) in place at the end... Looking up into the well - Amodel have done a good job detailing it - superdetailers could go to town, but not much will be seen with the truck and wheels in place .... All I have to do now is make the fuselage opening bigger - so I can slot it in - then make good the hole!!! The parts for the rear undercarriage - every one of which had to be cleaned up. The axles are not very substantial - they need to be strengthened. Some of the wheel hubs are also not very well moulded - fortunately it's on the inside facing hubs. Atlant
Good start Ken! I was contacted by russian modeller, who poinetd out to not-so-good representation of wheels by A-Model. There are much better repacement to kit's wheels made by Equipage. Here is a link to article, describing replacement wheels: (sorry, russian only!) http://scalemodels.ru/modules/myarticles/a...oryid_2617.html To make long story short: Equipage wheels are much better than original. Here is a link to comparison picture: http://scalemodels.ru/modules/myarticles/i...wheels.jpg.html This guy got some pictures of 3M, and is ready to help you with some data. Thanks, Leo. Flankerman
Good start Ken!I was contacted by russian modeller, who poinetd out to not-so-good representation of wheels by A-Model. Thanks Leo...... I had completely forgotten about Equipage wheels ..... I just emailed my Russian friend in Moscow and asked if he could pick me up a set. The only trouble is, they are getting hard to find - the Club-TM website does not have them listed (although that doesn't mean they don't have them.) Guy Holroyd's Linden Hill site also says that they are no longer in production - although I picked up a set of Equipage Tu-22M3 wheels from NeOmega at Telford last year - so someone is still casting them..... Cheers Ken
Flankerman
I have fitted the made-up rear wheel bay into the fibreglass resin fuselage. I had to make the aperture bigger to allow it to slot inside - now I have to make good the gaps at either side...... Much easier IMHO, than trying to make up the well inside the fuselage The front well is much the same - a 'box' made up from 37 parts - each one of which had to be cleaned up and 'fettled' to make it fit..... It was a big enough struggle making it up outside the fuselage - trying to do it Amodel's way by constructing it part-by-part inside the fuselage would have tried my patience to the limit!! :( As you can see - the 'box' is much bigger than the hole - so it too will have to be cut away - and then made good. I still reckon this is the easiest way..... Ken
