  1. Using the Julian calendar got me something more interesting than the SRAM missile I initially was. It seems 72-0227 is/was an A-7D Corsair II that went to AMARC in July 1992. I'll take a SLUFF over a SRAM any day.
  2. The only comic I ever got hooked on was the Rom Spaceknight series from Marvel, it ran from about 1979 to the mid 80s as I recall. I remember it as a very cohesive and compelling story line by comic book standards with lots of crossovers to other Marvel series such as the Avengers and X-Men. It also happened before the Rogue character reformed and joined the X-Men, she was different in many ways before she went good. Unfortunately, the likelihood of a film being made on the Rom series is next to nil as Marvel didn't retain the rights to the character after the comic ran its course and I unde
  3. As with Mingwin, it seems I'm from a rather large 72- block of SRAM missiles
  4. At least Testors went to some effort to make the scene look like the model was fresh from the workbench and usually had good lighting for the picture. Most other companies who put pictures of the real model on the box didn't exercise even that little bit of care. Not so inspiring, I agree, but definitely more attractive on the shelf than contemporaries who were doing the same on their boxes. Less inspiring from Testors was their "Hobby Shop Only" boxings net photo I knew one or two fellows who worked in model shops who just hated the HSO packaging with a passion because the plain brown b

  6. I don't know if the MiG-29 is that particularly difficult to draw, I've never tried, but it certainly has been abused in box art: This one's bad all around, not just the Fulcrum net photo net photo net photo net photo net photo (Dis)honourable mentions that I couldn't find decent images of: AMT 1/72 MiG-29 vs. F-16 set Hasegawa 1/72 MiG-29 "Striji" Hobbycraft 1/144 MiG-29 kits (they made at leas two boxings and they were both of dire box art) Trumpeter 1/32 MiG-29M (It looks like the artist just quit partway through and never came back to finish)
  7. I think there was some legislation in place through the late 70s and early 80s about honesty in advertising and having packaging imagery truly reflect the contents. Revell, Monogram and Airfix all went through that period with photos of finished, sometimes poorly, models in place of proper box art. That was a very uninspiring time indeed.
  8. Older Hobbycraft box art from the 80s and early 90s springs to mind for this: net photo net photo net photo net photo net photo
  9. Yes, they were so absolutely bitter at the Phantom that they took out their frustrations on it by turning a bunch into target drones. ;) Of course, if you turned A-10s into target drones, they might just be reusable after a hit if you kept the armor in them.
  10. The Phantom is still an intimidating beast to behold. The Turkish brought a pair of them to a show here back in September; they were a heck of a presence if only as static exhibits.
  11. I thought Israel retired their last Phantoms around 2004 or 2005. My understanding is that, outside of Iran obviously, the remaining Phantom users are Greece, Japan, Turkey and South Korea.
  12. Nice looking ship. It seems pulling down the practice "ski jump" at RNAS Yeovilton was really premature considering that this carrier has one.
  13. It's highly variable; which particular kit are you looking at?
  14. I'd like to see a Fulcrum from Zvezda too, on the condition they don't do it the same way they did their Su-24 Fencers a few years back. I still can't think about Zvezda's choice to reissue the Italeri/Dragon/Revell Fencer kit without my blood pressure going up a couple of notches.
  15. The trouble with that is how Streem engineered their Fencer so that you had to have the nose landing gear leg installed in the bay before you closed up the nose halves. They engineered the main gears into the fuselage in similar fashion. They molded the larger nose gear doors closed (as they typically are on the real Fencer) so I'd have to cut those out first so the whole gear well would be open to accept the Trumpeter gear leg. Believe me; for the trouble it was to get a Streem kit and the fight it's been to build so far, I'm not cutting it up any more than necessary. I'm still hoping t
  16. So does all this chatter mean I shouldn't stop wrestling with my Streem Su-24 just yet?
  17. I saw some of it on the news last night after work and just shook my head. Of course, all condolences to Cpl. Cirillo's family. It was reassuring to see that police in both Ottawa and Quebec were on the ball and got things under control quickly. Certainly, particular thanks goes out to Kevin Vickers for not hesitating when he had the opportunity to stop the nutter in Parliament. I shake my head because, as much pride as Canadians take in being and open, inclusive and tolerant society; we can be such a horribly naive lot on the same front. Yesterday, it looks like that naivety came back to b
  18. Yes, the nose does look off along the bottom contour. Almost as if the radome was attached upside down, if the radome in this kit is in fact a separate piece. I hope that's not going to be a decal option in the kit, it's definitely not the best Gripen tiger bird the Czechs have come up with.
  19. Ah, OK, I get the point of it now. Thanks.
  20. I think I did get the order of the R and the M/MF mixed up. My question comes from two angles: First, the R is firmly in the third generation of the MiG-21 while the PF and PFM are definitely in the second generation with all the differences that entails: http://www.mig-21.de/english/technicaldataversions.htm Second, Eduard already did an R version using the same molds as their M/MF: http://www.eduard.com/store/Eduard/Plastic-kits/Profipack/Aircraft/1-48/MiG-21R-1-48.html I'm just trying to figure out why the R is being mentioned in conjunction with this PF/PFM kit when Eduard has alrea
  21. I´ve noticed the R version being mentioned a bit here. Wasn´t that a third generation variant based off the M and MF variant?
  22. Cutting edge modern combat jet - check Highly precise and very expensive guided munitions - check Competent pilot of the female variety trained to the highest standard - check THAT time of month - double check! You are cleared for take off, good hunting!
  23. Thanks for the good comments, I'm glad the photos are appreciated.
  24. Oh yeah! When the last B-52 and KC-135 go to the Boneyard, a Herc is going to fly the crews home.
