Sean Bratton
don't know what all yer fuss is about !!pft !! you aint even a contender !! we are having an aircraft carrier with imaginary aircraft !! That's real out of the box thinking. That and an island nation that gets 90% of it's trade via sea getting rid of their long range maritime patrol force. The mind boggles. Cheers, Sean
CorsairMan
Wow!! Just........WOW!!!I honestly had never heard of this before. I wonder though..... ....would I have sat there night after night, building Defender models, for Defender pilots, dreaming away, hoping, that just on the off chance I'd finally meet the right Defender pilot that could point me in the right direction in working towards some Defender Backseat time??? Hmmm........ I remember seeign this as a kid and thinking ..... this guy is completely bat poop insane!! Now I look at it and I think this guy is either insane or a comedic genious. Can you imagine if that whole situation occured in todays world?? Good lord.....the 'reality show' nut job producers would be tripping over themselves trying to get to him first!!! But it sure was an interesting story. If you exclude the whole "Defender" thing, the aspect of the story that was about the Zero was truly amazing. The lengths that guy went to get the plane in the first place, plus the long road to getting it airborne. That's just staggering. To me the guy seems brilliant, with a side order of looney!!! Cheers, Sean even more scarey is the fact they are allegedley using the budget to fight our present wars ironicly the harrier ( the best aircraft for afghanistan ) is being scrapped in favour of an aircraft with more down time and we're cutting back on an order of much needed chinooks !! it is still the farce of those at the top unafected whilst those doing the job are made a farce of !! Jay Chladek
Speaking of flying Humvees....http://www.defensenews.com/story.php?i=4783521 And that is why I mentioned it. :) As for brilliant with a side order of looney, it takes both traits to really get something cutting edge off the ground. What side of it rules the person in question and how it is perceived can mean the difference between ridicule and acceptance. Besides, I can think of one perceived (at the time) looney who changed the world. Granted Leonardo Da Vinci sketched one out hundreds of years ago, but it took a guy like Igor Sikorsky to flesh out the single rotor helicopter, test fly it and refine the design to the point where military and civilian applications the world over can't function without it. I imagine during the gestation of his design, a lot of people wondered just what the heck he was doing. Edited October 22, 2010 by Jay Chladek

And you're right, it often takes both aspects to result in something pretty impressive.
SBARC
I say put the Spit IX back into production.....they'd make a dandy interceptor.....and make them available to the civilian market as well. :)

SBARC
We had an aircraft carrier...unfortunately we sold it for razor blades. :P (HMCS Bonaventure) I'm no expert on Canadian Carriers, but I am aware of 3 of them. HMCS Warrior (CVL 20) HMCS Magnificent (CVL 21) HMCS Bonaventure (CVL 22) HMCS Warrior HMCS Magnificent HMCS Bonaventure Currently 11 countries "have" Carriers. I say "have" because the lone Chinese Carrier isn't operational yet. US has 12 carriers (this number might be one too high as the new Ford Class Carrier might not be operational yet) India has 3 carriers UK has 2 carriers (not sure how accurate this number is due to recent budget cuts) Spain has 2 carriers Italy has 2 carriers Japan has 2 carriers France has 1 carriers Russia has 1 carriers Brazil has 1 carriers China has 1 carriers (isn't operational yet) Thailand has 1 carriers New USN Ford Class carrier

However, Steve, The only one I recall was HMCS Bonaventure, as the rest were decommissioned before I was even born. And HMCS Bonaventure was decommissioned on July 3, 1970, less than a month after I was born. So I guess I can say I was part of the generation where Canada was a carrier utilizing nation. SBARC
I have a friend in his mid 70's that is a retired destroyer Captain with the CDN navy and he's got plenty of memories of the CDN carriers. I've got to talk to him about it more. China bought a carrier a while back from the Ukraine for $20 million......it was in pretty neglected shape. China said they planned to turn it into a casino. That plan changed and they are now refurbishing it for operational use. The interesting part of this little story.......is I could have sworn I heard a few days ago that China was going to buy one of the Royal Navy carriers and turn it into a "casino". But it could be my memory is playing tricks with me.

I think its safe to say Canada is all set with not worrying about getting attacked by naval air power unless yahs pee in Nato's cornflakes B) Was looking at Taiwan's and sounds like they only have one harrier jet air worthy. Eh? Then we can take "Canada's game" on the high seas. Eh? And mebbe we should take back all them "Arrow-techs" yous guys at McDonnell Douglas, and Grumman and so ons forth stole after Diefenbaker decided to cancel the Arrow...and put Avro outta business, eh? Then we Canooks...get 'em fancy F-22s eh?
