Horizontal Stabs I cut them to be more MiG like. Right side has been cut, left has is marked to be cut

1/48 scale Foxbat fin halves (their mates were used for another project-- another shelf queen I completed years ago in fact) So I needed to measure and cut and scribe some new ones using sheet styrene

And in place (I had a picture that showed the detail of the new halves but it was too blurry to use)

I find the flanker to be very similar to the tomcat. Viewed from some angles, both appear to be enormous wings with engines hanging down. Are you going to make the nosecone bigger too?

Great question! I'm going to try and make it appear larger by moving the demarcation line further aft to make the Radome appear bigger. I heard the Academy kit has a more bulbous nose, but I have never bought one (plan to soon) it might have been more ideal, but Lets see if this works!

speaking of the nose cone:

Homemade, with a pin and some spare tube. Russian birds tend to have longer probes

cleaned up

So the Academy K-36 seats kind of leave something to be desired.

I just cut the ejection loop handles off the top and then painted them (reasonably) close to a MiG-23.

Su-27 Exhausts

Canopy masked to look Russian like. Used twin seat Sukhoi Su-22s and MiG-23 for ideas.

Underside painted a gray who's name escapes me.

The joys of removing gross nasty masking tape that was applied about 5 years ago.

Dk Green on Top, with a rattle bomb. After that I painted by hand Euro I Green, Military Brown and Finally an off black I mixed on the spot. So I stepped back to admire my handiwork and...

I didn't like it. :( There are way too many cool schemes out there. More cool schemes than I have models in the stash (and I have A LOT of models in the stash.) So even though this thing has been a shelf queen for a long time, and the finish line is in sight, I'm going back to the drawing board. More updates to come.

It reminds me of SEA special forces cammo as depicted in the movies.

Dont give up!

It very much reminds me of the MERDC patter, which was not my intention. I wanted something a lot more block but it got away from me. :crying2: The nice thing though was deciding I didn't like fast and finding an alternative to start on pretty quickly.

Sat down with SWMBO and we looked at some of the excellent profiles from Richard Chafer

Decided on this one

Its also helpful because I probably couldn't replicate that masking job on the Canopy, so this one had Dk. Green.

Jade Green rattle bomb.

Masked with silly putty

White went on well enough. I went a little heavier on the nose and tailfin with the idea that they would be dielectric panels but it caused some issues some cracking on the nose and bad stuff on a fin:

Wow what a mess!! Silly putty and tape to save on scarce silly putty

Euro I Gray Radome. I couldn't do white, and I needed to pick a different gray from the underside.

By pure coincidence they even matched up! didn't even try! :woot.gif:

Last shot on a freshly cleaned work bench.

Much happier with this.

Looks very Soviet...errr...Russian to me  . What ifs are always neat to see. A lot of creativity and artistic interpretation. Looking forward to seeing more.

Don.

Thank you for all the positive feedback! Glad the new scheme is a hit!

Couple quick updates:

1. TTomcat and Mrs Tomcat had a baby Tomcat 7 weeks ago yesterday (my boy is now 50 days old today!) So things on the bench of slowed to a crawl. It took me 2 weeks to apply 10 decals. Yes I am series. I did a couple every other day or so.

2. Those decals then promptly flaked off, and had to be redone :bandhead2: :bandhead2:

New star

17516395699_fe4b13889a_b.jpg

Blurry pic of new bort number. on a positive note, the landing gear strut in the background is perfectly in focus

17702921431_3074e47df5_b.jpg

I used Tamiya weathering pastels to color the "metal" Ridiculously easy to use and very fun effect. My only regret is that I didn't tinker with it more and create more intricate panel work with more masks. very nice to have something go well!! some of the paint peeled off earlier but hey its all "weathering" right?

17702718945_6a1dea74e6_b.jpg

Finally a wash.

Thanks for stopping by.

Oh wow a newborn!! Congratulations!!! Mine is almost 15 months but I remember the early days with her. Dont worry about sleep - it does get better! Also, the necks on onsies are designed so that they can be taken off without it going over his head.....you'll soon find out why thats handy.

Thanks Corsair, your posts here since you had your little one have been what has told me "you can do both" when it comes to being a new dad and a scale model attempter.

Thank you to everyone for all the well wishes!!

This will be the last model I finish in the state of Texas:

I am very happy to be finished! Its not the most technically well done model. But as a concept I am very happy with it. Yes its a 3 foot model, but from 3 feet it sure looks Russian!! The back seat is actually set higher to give it that kind of "nose down" illusion like the Flanker has. Its amazing how just changing the lines on the Radome and adding metal to the rear, along with some new fins and a few small details can create such a different look.

Thanks for all the help, Shelf Queen GBs are the only ones I finish for some reason :sunrevolves:

Nice, like the paint job. When I first saw it I thought it

was a Mig-29, it really doesn't look like a Tomcat at first

Sweet! It came out really awesome :) I love the camo. I always have a problem making up a scheme. It always look unconvincing. But Your scheme belongs on this Tomcat! Splendid!

Well done "what-if" TT  . Just add snow and a bottle of vodka and she'd fit right in on any Soviet/Russian flight line.
