Trumpeter Mig-29K 1/32

Recommended Posts

This is my first posting to a forum at ARC, if I mess up please let me know. This is also my first jet kit. With all of the information available here at ARC I've become hooked on jet aircraft. I purchased this kit in July from Squadron for $69.00 thinking I could not go wrong, well with only 2 aircraft ever built, a poor level of detail and all of the rest of the problems mentioned in these forums, I now see why the kit was selling for half price. Nevertheless with aftermarket kits from Aries, Eduard, Zactomodels and some scratch work there may be hope for this project yet. Here are some pics of my progress so far.

To properly fit the Aries seat in this kit I have had to increase the overall length and width of the cockpit. It looks to me that the proportions are still close to the actual aircraft but if there are any errors that anyone can see from these photos please let me know. The cockpit is still modular and should be easy to correct.

Welcome to ARC

That is some beautiful work so far!!!

How did you make everything so precise? The grooves on the back wall and floor? The raised rivets? The buttons on the instrument panel?

Great stuff...

 Chris

Yeah, what Chris said!

How did you do that?

Welcome to ARC ksenna, it's a pleasure to see your work.

That is quite an introduction. Very crisp scratch-building.

i suspect you will go far and I look forward to further updates.

With that level of skill you might consider talking to Zactoman and Harold. Perhaps there would be a market for a new cockpit for the MIG-29?

Good luck with this project. I hope you post a thread in the In-Progress forum so that we can follow your updates.

Yeah, what Chris said!

How did you do that?

Thank you Harold and Chris.

First, all of the Evergreen plastic that I use needs to be surfaced. I wet sand the plastic before cutting with 600 grit, up to 1500 grit on a side that will be visible. I always sand on a flat hard surface and in the case of thin sheets, I sand against a plane of glass. To get the straight edges on plastic, I cut the strip, sheet ect., oversized, then build up a rig to the exact size I want, insert the piece and sand to size. Hopefully the next to pics will clear up what I am trying to describe.

Sand-1.jpg

The 'gauge' that is stained with red in the top picture was used to make strips, similar to the strips I used to make the guage for the floor and back grooves of the cockpit tub. The strips were then used to make a 'lattuce', see next pic.

Dimp.jpg

Now I lamanate the lattuce with a .005 plastic top sheet. When dry, I create the grooves with an empty ball point pen, pressing down on the unsupported parts of the top sheet. Before using the grooved panel let the finished piece dry for a few days. I've attached more than one panel right away, only to find out I over glued the piece two days later.

Over glued:

Rivets are made in same way, drill a hole in the guide and press with the pen.

As for the buttons on the I/O panel, it will be easier to make a drawing, scan and post. I have a new office printer that scans but have not set it up yet. It will take me a day or two to post because I'm talking about drawing by hand, I'm to old to screw around learning a drawing program. These pictures will give you an idea of how the I/O panel was made.

IO-Comp.jpg

This makes the buttons adjustable and easy to airbrush. I've rarely seen excellent painting done by brush, (I know I cannot do it) so the design of the cockpit is based on airbrushing. That is also why a resin cockpit was not an option. Sorry about the out of focus pics of the panel, my photography is not very good.

I strongly suggest You remove this post & go hide in a dark secret cave for the rest of Your life !!!!!

If the aftermarket-industry get's word on this one You'll definately be in some serious trouble !!!!!

:thumbsup::thumbsup: :D

"Check Six....."

Spooky.

P.S.: 2 small tip's;

* stick in a recognizable item (coin) in the pic's and most certainly 75% of the ARC-population

will go banana's !!!

* post this one at the "in progress" section

WOW. Awesome work. I'm building one of these right now too (using the black box Mig-29M cockpit, in fact, which is a bit inaccurate, but I'm o.k. with that since I'm going to pose the thing "in flight" anyway). Picked up Zacto's burner cans and they're awesome, so I'd recommend those if you don't already have them. The kit itself does have many inaccuracies, so I'm sure you'll have a lot of work on your hands. Please keep the posts coming!

Great work again,

I like your engineering. Very well thought out.

What is your background?

I have not thought about actually sanding the styrene sheets. It gives your work a machined look.

Thanks for sharing.

Keep it up and keep posting.

Cheers,

Harold

NIIIIIIIIICE, one of the cleanest scratch builds I´ve seen so far. I´m currently scratching parts for the cockpit of my MiG-29A and the way you did the grooves is exactly what I was looking for.

Please, post more pics of your magnificant work :monkeydance:

  • 2 months later...

Hello again, I apologize for taking so long to update this topic, there has been the holidays, a vacation and a 3 week "touch of pleurisy" that has occupied some of my time. I have not touched the 29K cockpit since the end of December. First let me say thank you to everyone who replied to the first set of pictures, I am overwhelmed by all of the kind words and that have been posted. Thank you for the suggestions also. The following pictures may be the last on this topic for a bit, I have been working on another project for the past few days. The new project is a 1/32 scale MiG-29A cockpit for the Revell kit. I has been designed to fit Zactomodel's new Mig-29A kit (Chris's kit is excellent by the way!). The 29A mock-up of the cockpit tub has been finished and fitted, I'll start on the details in the next couple of days. A new topic will be started for the 'A' and when similar parts for both cockpits are produced they will appear here also. The following pics are of new I/O panel parts (I cracked the first one) and some parts for the HUD.

Here are some more pics of the previous parts. The parts are just fitted together, not glued, so they may appear a little off.

I just noticed that there is some sagging on the top of the row of large buttons. I did kind of force that piece in there, glad it's not glued!

Wow! That's great!! So crisp and neat work! :)

Eager to see the stuff complete!

BTW, what tools d'u use?

Happy modeling!

Alexander.

:P

Thank you, I have two exhaust kits that you did and they are excellent. Although pictures of the exhaust kit parts are impressive, when I recieved the kits I was knock-out by how thin and detailed the parts actually are! I had no idea on how to improve on the 29K kit exhaust. You saved me alot of time and I know I could not have come close to the quality of the work you did. As for tools, I only use the typical hand tools, x-acto no. 11, pin-vise with 61-80 drill bits and a good quality pair of calipers are my main tools. Years ago I made a kind of a drill press for a pin-vise and I use it alot. Its pretty beat-up but still works well. Besides sandpaper (never files) and sometimes a x-acto saw, that covers most of what I use.

Hiya, Mark! Thanks much for my work appreciation so high. As for the exhaust pipes, you know, there some moments to be critisized, I was a bit on a hurry and didn't make the petals to be more crisp and accurate as they tuned out. :)

As I can see, you use the same tools like I do but your results are really of a top notch quality.

Well, Fulcrum madness still goes on! Back to the bench to keep it up! :D

Happy modeling!

Alexander.
