1/48 Mosquito FB XVIII 'Molins'

Recommended Posts

Here we have the 1/48 Tamiya Mosquito FB VI which will be converted into one of the slightly lesser known variants, which is the FB XVIII 'Molins' Mosquito that was equiped with 1 x 57mm cannon in place of the 4 x 20mm guns under the nose. It will be modelled as NT225 '0' of 248 Sqn, June 1944.

Here's a couple of pics of the real aircraft (note the slightly uneven invasion stripes).

Decided to use the CMK cockpit interior, pic shows the sidewalls installed and the main components assembled, although how much of this will be seen once the fuselage is assembled could be open to debate!

The flaps have been cut away and will be replaced with resin items fitted in the lowered position, the elevators have also been removed and will also be replaced in a slightly deflected position. The underside of the inboard flaps will be ground away and replaced with the underside flap sections of the FB XVIII (lower middle of the pic) because they have external strengthening strips, it was found that the blast from the 57mm cannon damaged the standard inboard flaps.

A few more bits that will be added along the way, the replacement section which fits in place of the standard bomb doors, underside nose piece that houses the gun barrel (in place of the 4 x 20mm guns) and the three nose pieces which have external armour plate added to them. Also shown is the replacement canopy which has a bulged side window on the starboard side only.

Cockpit interior has been painted and is close to being complete, Humbrol 78 Interior Green was used which was lightened with some White. A wash of thinned Matt Black was then brushed over everything and allowed to dry, then dry-brushed with Humbrol 78 heavilly lightened with Matt White. Various boxes and panels are in Dark Grey and a few switches picked out with some colours. Decided not to use the resin CMK instrument panel for a change, instead I used their photo-etched panel pieces with their film instrument dials behind them (the backs of the film dials were painted white) fitted onto the Tamiya kit panel which had the surface detail removed first.

Thank you kindly, folks. B)

Elevators are now fixed in place and the underside of the inboard flaps has been ground away with the Dremmel ready for the FB XVIII reinforced flaps to be installed. Wing tip lights have been glued on after first painting the bulb lights their respective colours, and all of the resin nose and replacement bomb door sections are in place. Also note that the two outer 0.303" gun ports in the nose cap have been blanked off with plasticard discs (made with the Waldron punch and die set) because this particular aircraft only retained the two inner guns (see black and white pic, above). The added armour plate on the sides of the nose was achieved by masking off the relevant areas and then spraying them with about 10 or 12 (!) light coats of dark grey, spraying this number of coats of paint gives a very slightly 'raised' area compared to the rest of the fuselage, and then the lines were scribed into the paint once dry. (You could simply scribe the armour plate on and not bother with paint).

The crew entry door will be left in the open position, with the access ladder in place.

Wow, you make working with resin replacement pieces look like they are part of the kit. Love the effect of the armour plating on the side of the nose. Great progress! I am thoroughly enjoying your build!

Whoa, great footage of what those Mossies could do with that 57 mm gun and the rockets. Devastating is the word for it! Thanks for sharing that with us as well!

Neil,

This looks great. I am really keen on some of your 1/48 Mosquito conversions but I wonder what is one to do about markings ( codes and s/n's ) as the only set that I am aware of for one of your conversions would be an Aeromaster set I have which has markings for the TR33 Sea Mosquito.

Cheers,

Tom

Great job on the model! :salute:

Great video!

"...equivalent to the broadside of a cruiser!" Now that's firepower in a small package! Small package AND agile AND long-ranged! The Mossie sure was a great plane!

Thanks again people. :)

Neil,

Is this a Paragon resin set? I think I have a older set for the Airfix kit but do not recall right now. Is this set avaliable for the Tamiya kit? Thanks and keep up the good work.

Jim Root

Jim, yup it is for the Tamiya kit now (and is alot different to the previous set!).

Hello Neil, that mossie is fantastic, well done.By the way,did you ever finish the bronco you where doing

....Neil p

The Bronco is still here sitting on the 'to-do' pile, I still need somebody to cast me the undercarriage legs in metal.

Tom, I think there are some generic code/serial number sheets out there, or a quick look on Hannants site comes up with this link:

http://www.hannants.co.uk/search/index.php...%5B%5D=code+asc

The front and rear of the u/c bays now have some added detail from plastic sheet/strip, the bonus to this is that it neatly covers the awkward join line in the rear part of the bays. The firewall/bulkhead in the forward part of the bays has been extended to meet the rest of the nacelles, this is as much detail as I intend to add as I do not want to get bogged down trying to replicate bucket loads of detail which in truth will not really be seen once the u/c legs and doors have been added. Drop tanks are glued together and rubbed down, the filler and drain points come already moulded to each drop tank half but just ignore those when rubbing them down, it's not worth trying to work around them to get a smooth join, just rub them off when sanding and replace them with plasticard discs made with the Waldron set. Lightening holes have been drilled into the mud-guard brackets, and an additional bracket has been added to the two 'X' shaped cross braces. Additional bracing and struts have been added to the door guides on the u/c legs, made from short lengths of stretched sprue, and also the cable rollers have been added to the front of the legs made from short lengths of plastic rod and small discs again made with the Waldron set. The copper wire hanging from the bottom of the legs will be the brake lines, and will be located into holes drilled in the wheel hubs once everything is assembled.

Am quite enjoying putting this together. :)

Fantastic build Neil.

Nice to see you have also filled the panels on the inboard fuel tank covers. Most models I have seen this has been left, and even a wash put around it as though it is an access panel.

I was examining some details on our FB-VI HR339 on Saturday and feel it is time to do some more work on my Tamiya Mossie.

Keep up the awesome work and thanks for the inspiration!

Cheers

Anthony

The areas which will be the White part of the invasion stripes has been sprayed, and the spinners now have a coat of Sky on them. Undercarriage legs were airbrushed in Humbrol Matt Aluminium with a coat of thinned Tamiya Matt Black acrylic sploshed all over them to darken all of the recesses and corners, then once dry they were dry-brushed with the Matt Aluminium again. Drop tanks were also Sprayed Matt Aluminium with some Kleer on top to make them slightly shiny.

Will be masking the White areas and spraying the camo on soon.

Beautiful work Neil

Thanks mate, I now have my Tamiya FB VI Mossie on the bench to do a Kiwi one!

Do you have, or know where there are any photos of the camera instillation in the nose for the big strike camera that the coastal command ones sometimes had fitted? I am modelling mine after NZ2338 which survives a few hours north of me in Nelson. She has the nose with the big camera port but the nose is all sealed up and you cant see inside. I have built a new nosecap but am thinking of using my Aires nose gunbay and was wondering how the big F24 camera was mounted in there.

Stunning work there indeed, cant wait for the next installment........

Neil, where can I purchase your long carb intakes that has Paypal?

Cheers

Anthony

Anthony, not sure about the camera installation pics, I will see if I have any references but don't hold your breath.

Not sure who stocks my stuff that uses Paypal to tell the truth (I don't use Paypal either).
