  1. I have only painted Alclad II over Mr. Surface 1200 grey primer. I sanded the primer with 1500 grit, cleaned up the surface and painted according to the instructions (very low psi, airbrush pretty close to the surface 1-2") and have been happy with the results. I was even able to mask over the alclad to paint red-white and blue for an F-84G Thunderbirds scheme. I used Testors Metalizer sealer over the alclad and decals which kept the original sheen sealed the decals. To this point I have been very happy with Alclad II! I also like the exhaust manifold color they have.
  2. I agree with Andre's assesment above- One thing I found odd about the Academy kit is that it has absolutely nothing for wheel wells! There is a socket for the gear and that is it! I you are building to have the underside viewed..be sure to at least pick up the CMK resin wheel wells set!

    X-32

A couple of my observations regarding the X-32/X-35 competition: 1) Boeing did fly the X-32 first, buy a couple of months...but I remember watching it take off on its first flight from Palmdale and streaming hydro behind it from the tails. My understanding was they knew it was leaking but chose to make the flight direct to Edwards anyway to be able to check off that box of first flight. My opinion is that Boeing just did not do anything outstanding with thier X-32. It seemed that they just ambled along meeting the minimum requirements of the competition. 2) Lockheed flew a couple months l

    X-32

I was lucky enough to be part of the X-35 team! During flight test a lot of us Lockheed guys dubbed the X-32 "Monica". (i.e. Monica Lewinski...) If you ever watch the battle of the X-Planes NOVA video, take note of the X-32 during it's vertical landing tests at Pax River. Boeing removed the chin scoop on the intake, replaced the normal landing gear with fixed gear so most of the gear hydraulic system could be removed, and other weight saving measures just to be able to land her vertically. And that was at sea level! The X-35 did a whole series of vertical take-off tests over the hover pit
  5. Never tried that! About how long do you have to work with it? does it adhere a lot better than the decal glues? I wonder if that would be worth trying if you know you are going to have to mask over it?
  6. Some other Ideas for geting into a quality airbrush for less money- Depending on where you live, look for on-line coupons for your local craft stores. Hobby Lobby has a 40% off any one item coupon usually every other week or every third week. That will get you a $200 airbrush for 120 bones. I have seen Iwata and Badger there. Roberts also carries an extensive line of Badger and parts. Again look for the 40% off Coupon, on tuesdays you can use two coupons in one transaction. I have run across airbrushes in Pawn Shops (Best buy was a Badger 100 and a Vega siphon feed together for $15) and
  7. Henry- Thanks for sending me your list. Unfortunately it looks like we had similar interests, There just isn't enough of what I want/need to buy the lot. I wish you comfort and peace with your situation. I hope a couple of the other responses can help you out! Take Care- Mike
  8. Thank you all for the help!
  9. Thanks for the link J.C. ! Hope mine turns out as nice!
  10. Black Magic CEBM72166 F-107 Markings, Canopy and Wheel Hub Masks $4 Do you still have these? Sending PM-
  11. Getting ready for paint on my Dragon P-61A. Thought I had all the reference I needed for the paint colors.... Decal sheets, the kit instructions and other references generally list the upper color as Olive Drab so I am assuming FS34087 ???? The lower color has differing references as to Neutral Grey, Mid Grey, Medium Grey..... Does anyone have a simple answer as to which grey is correct and my assumption is right with the Olive Drab?? I am a modern jet builder and this is one of my first forays into WWII birds.
  12. So the side scoops at the A/B section are gone as well for a B? Thanks-
  13. Could anybody clarify the differences between the B & D thuds? I want to build the thunderbirds F-105B and from what I understand, If I were to swap the B nose/radome onto a D I would pretty much have the external changes needed. Is there other differences I am missing? Looking to cut up a Hasegawa B-model and graft to either the Trumpeter or the Monogram D-Model. Thanks for any help!
  14. If you take a look in the jewelry / beading section of the craft stores (i.e. Hobby Lobby, Michael's etc.) they sell packages of different sized small zip lock baggies. I have three different sizes that I use to keep my spares organized by what kit they came from. I also use them every time I get a kit, I will place the clear parts in one and the decals in another if they are small enough. The sizes I have are 3"x5", 2"x3" and 1"x2". They also work great to keep small in process parts rounded up. A bag of 50 is like $3.00.
  15. they come up on ebay every once in a while and they are very nice! I have seen two different sets, one that has the yellow NASA stripes and the 9the SRW shield for those aircraft, and another that has an F-101 in the sheet as well.
  16. To be honest- I only got the Fujimi kit because I ran across it on Amazon when I was doing some Christmas shopping. It was $43 with free shipping so I got it without thinking much of it. I am a pretty frugal modeller, can't say that I can think of any kit of a 1/72 fighter that I have paid over $50 for. It is a nice kit, but one that in my mind is about a $30 - $35 value if I compare it to the Italeri F-22 that was about $15-17 ( I try not to think that I am stuck in the 80's). I wish I had waited for price to come down...but then again $43 was close enough to $35 To give you a perspectiv
  17. I have the Fujimi kit but not the RoG. Looks to have significantly more detail than the Italeri kit (stating the obvious I know...), have not tried fitting up anything yet. I like the intake trunking and the fact that it has two complete engine cases that can be displayed out of the aircraft. Looks to be on par with the level of detail in the 1/48 Academy kit. Is the 1/72 Academy kit a scaled down version of thier 1/48? not unlike what Revell/Moogram did with some of thier kits? I remeber looking at the 1/48th Hasegawa & Academy kits at one of our club meetings and one of them was way
  18. I will get a scan of Step 40 shortly so you can see what I am working with. I finished it other than the lines from that step and it looks cool the way it is. Go a good response from my local club last week. I will upload some photos shortly. thanks for the interest!
  19. Make sure that each component is adequately blended in thier respective container before measureing either of the two. Accurately measuring by weight is tough to do with small amounts of resin. You usually have to be within 10% of the recommended mix ratio for the catylist to work properly.
  20. I would really like to build the Revell 1/144 Shuttle / 747 stack that I did as a kid in the 80's. I see them on ebay every once in a while, but never for a decent price. I believe it was the only kit to have the tail fairing for when it is being transported across the country. A bit of trivia regarding the 747/ Shuttle transport. I think this happened back around 2001.....One shuttle was just finishing some maintenence at Boeing's Palmdale facility at Plant 42 when another shuttle made a weather diverted landing at EAFB. The one at Palmdale was mated with one of the transporters and the
