Hawkeye's Hobbies
For some reason this concept popped into my brain and I had to act on it. What you get when you mate 707 wings to a 727 fuselage. It looks kinda like a Boeing knockoff build by Tupelevski. This will be interesting project to follow, I have no idea where it will go. Next up is the engine configuration. It sorta looks like a VC-10.
boeing767mech
So they have 727-200's and 200 Advanced, This must be the 727-200 Even More Advanced. David
The Rat
HH, I do 'what if' stuff almost exclusively, and I will be watching this one with my tongue hanging out!
svaz
Kinda cool! Need to sling the outside pods to make her a funky three holer - oooorrrrrrr - ALL SEVEN ENGINES!!

habu2
So, you've got some parts left over... if you put the 727 wings on the 707 fuselage, would you have a Boeing commercial airglider?
Kingoalie
Cool! I'd put the two inboard engines on and leave the outboard engines and the two rear engines off. Kind of like a mini L-1011...sorta...kinda...not really but ok...
Toad
Looks like a VC-10 to me !
David Walker
Looks like a VC-10 to me ! It definitely has that look to it. Or the B727-200ER. Edited December 5, 2007 by David Walker
Trojan Thunder
Well I would never have thought to bash those kits together, I will be keeping an eye on this thread
Hawkeye's Hobbies
Here's a shot comparing the wing area between the two. Still not certain about the engine configuration. I leaning towards either the conventional with bigger motors or a tri-jet setup. I'm thinking there might be some external buddy type fuel tanks too.
kitnut617
A slight fuselage stretch wouldn't be amiss!
Hawkeye's Hobbies
I thought about stretching the fuselage since I have another kit in the stash, but generally old school thoughts on extended range aircraft would be leave it as is or shorten it. Hence the 747SP conception. Getting the fuselage square would have just made it more complicated that I wanted for this project. I decided to stay with the stock powerplants as I didn't have any larger engines that matched up well. Had I removed the centerline tail engine that would have allowed me to use some big fans off a 757. The tri-jet concept with two on the wings and one in the tail also would necessitate some pylon conversions so I stayed stock. What I am going to do is use the 707 or 757 landing sticks because the 727's are not beefy looking enough for that big wing. Plus I may mount a radome under the belly. The 707 gear balance out the airframe rather well during test fit. Pondering marking ideas, military or NASA markings seem to be appropriate. But personalize livery hasn't been ruled out either. David Hingtgen
I'd suggest an airline that never had the 727. Nor 707, if possible. KLM? Swissair?
elmayerle
Well, you could mark it as a C-22C with some USAF scheme.
robert61267
I was going to suggest some huge 777 style engines to hang on the wings, but the landing gear clearance would make that untenable. How about replacing the little side engines with some huge modern engines? The 727 would need some more thrust to lift the bigger wing and all.
David Hingtgen
An uncommon conversion for real 727's is replacing the side engines with JT8D-200's (MD-80). The center engine is then just run at idle most of the time. It's easier/cheaper than replacing all three with Fokker 100 engines, but not as quiet/fuel efficient. boeing767mech
That can be the new NASA high altitude research aircraft, to take the place of the WB-57's. David
Jay Chladek
So if it is a 727 XLR, will it turn into a giant robot ala Megas XLR? :D Seriously though, nice kitbash thus far. Edited December 7, 2007 by Jay Chladek
Hawkeye's Hobbies
I think I mentioned before, I picked through my stash and spares but could find engines suited for this project. Everything was way too big. The best I had was a couple 757 engines, but with that little hole in between them it looked stupid. I did add little canards, I'm speculating they would be needed to assist with pitch at low speeds and high AOA. Anyway, not sure why I chose these colors, but here it is in its base primer colors. Maybe she'll evolve into a longer range sister ship to the C-9B Nightengale. Having both a side cargo door and rear stairs, this could have been a possibility. I remember reading articles about flying the 727, having a high sink rate during landing and a pilot had to be well ahead of it while flying it. The larger wings would probably reverse that, greater lift and lower stall speeds.
JasonW
Add an E-3 AWACS radome to it...... Sorry, I get carried away sometimes.
Hawkeye's Hobbies
Add an E-3 AWACS radome to it...... Sorry, I get carried away sometimes. That has possibilities...got one? One from a (1:144) E-2C would work.
JasonW
That has possibilities...got one? One from a (1:144) E-2C would work.Sorry, unfortunately no, I only have the Heller 1/72 E-3 AWACS kit. I don't have a lot of 1/144 kits, only a few Russian bombers and transports. But it would make for an interesting twist, wouldn't it?It would be a little hard to make from scratch only because of the contours on the disc. I am the worlds worst scratch builder though, so maybe it is within the realm of possiblities...... Edited December 7, 2007 by JasonW
Hawkeye's Hobbies
Adding some touches to the paint by doing some of the cowls, radome and wing surfaces.
oldHooker
Adding some touches to the paint by doing some of the cowls, radome and wing surfaces. That's looking GREAT Hawkeye!! One can conjure-up all kinds of possibilities, and that's what makes "what-if's" so interesting! I chopped a 72nd scale B-17G into a Rutan type Canard with contra-rotating pusher props one time, and it was so much fun! I know you're enjoying this, thanks for the progress reports! Take care, Frank Edited December 8, 2007 by oldHooker
