CD 48235: F-89 Scorpion

Recommended Posts

Designing decals for a 60+ year old aircraft is hard - it is not like an F-16 sheet where there are thousands of multi-megapixel photos posted on the Web every week. If I can't design it to my standards of quality using the reference materials I can find, I would rather not do it at all. This sheet will take some time to complete.

I’ve got the Schiffer photo chronicle book if you need to borrow it!

Any news? With a Revell’s reissue it will be definitelly hot. Not to mention that there is nothing interesting for at least 20 years were printed 😉

Very much agreed!  The F-89 is one of, if not THE, favorite plane of mine.  I've built all the 1/48 Revell kits using all the aftermarket decals that are out there for it and I'm just champing at the bit for this new release!  Maybe I need to find a new favorite plane while I'm waiting.  LOL!

More progress - these silver-backed stencilling will look great on the few ADC gray ANG options on the sheet:

These might be a good addition to your basics line of decals.  I'd certainly pick up a couple sheets.

Don't know if you are considering it, but this was one of the most attractive gray Scorpions. I found a picture in the Aerofax monograph on the F-89. Then there is this shot in the grave yard. It's a Minnesota ANG J model. I made my 1/72 Revell kit with tiny white stars from a really old Microscale sheet that had markings for wargaming armor. The tiny Minnesota lettering under the horizontal stabs came from a railroad lettering decal sheet. The modeler will have to do the red-white-blue tail and tank scheme with paint.

I have seen this scheme, and it is very striking. I always thought it was a one-off as all other Minnesota jets were pretty plain. This message on the Flickr post of the graveyard photo provides an explanation - apparently it was one of the three jets decorated this way for the 1965 Ricks Trophy. I will see what I can do with the limited information I have but it is likely it will be on the sheet (and the 1/72 version which will follow)

A +1 from me for F-89 decals in 1/48th scale. I purchased the 1990 F-89C and F-89D/J kits and built the F-89C; it's a great kit however the decals were literally like applying cellophane and I still have the F-89D/J in the stash awaiting a decent set of markings. My request would be for a 57th FIS bird based at Keflavik in Iceland in the late 1950's but I am happy with any option that gives me the excuse to apply lots of Arctic red paint 😉
