Hi everyone,

Well, here's an update on my build... I'm very pleased with it as this is my first aircraft model in almost 20 years ;-)

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the great comments...

Dreammh: Here's the process I use for the build...

1) I airbrushed on the base color(s) (I used Gunze Sangyo Acrylics - Acqueous Hobby Color)…

· I put in about 5% Tamiya Acrylic Paint Thinner to each batch of Gunze Acrylics I airbrush on.

2) I airbrush on clear gloss (again Gunze Acrylic) - not too heavy because I don't want to seal too many of the panel lines with too much paint;

3) I use Citadel acrylics and mix my own panel wash (approx 80% water 18% black Citadel paint and 2% dishwashing detergent - I kinda eye this bit and add more paint if the panel lines are not coming up as vividly as I like)…

· I don't apply the wash too liberally in fact I try to get it in the panel lines as much as possible... let dry for 2-10 minutes then I rub of excess with paper towel (Citadel paints dry very quickly)... apply a bit of moisture to stubborn spots on the paper towel... you may need to re-apply wash if you rub it out of panel lines. The clear gloss coat ensures that the excess panel wash comes off quite nicely;

4) Apply another thin coat of clear gloss to seal panel lines in preparation for decaling;

5) Apply decals with Micro Set and Micro Sol;

6) Apply matt coat (Gunze acrylics again)... actually I applied 3-4 coats. But I let the model dry at least 24-48 hours between any coats… again I was going for the painted on look of the decals.

I used a slightly different technique for the landing gear to get a different effect. The landing gear was just aibrushed matt white (Gunze) then panel washed (Citadel - as above) into crevices, then dry brushed with Citadel white... allowing maximum control of the amount of darkness coming through the white. The effect is quite good for landing gear on aircraft that are kept immaculately clean… the resultant shading looks grey... more like layers of dust as opposed to dirt and grime.

dragan_mig31: The color I used for the body was Acqueous Hobby Color H305 Gray FS36118

Best,

-Greg

you have managed to do something that many people, myself included, have had a hard time doing...you have brought life to an overall FS36118 painted jet. Very nice work and very well executed. My hats off to ya!!

20 years since your last aircraft model huh?? I dont believe it!!! :thumbsup:

Looks awesome Greg!

Will be printed and added to my coveted "tips and techniques" binder

when you are finished. :)

Since the airframe looks so good, how did you tackle the instruments?

Yup... I have taken a number of picture of my old models... see my Old Models folder on my Photobucket account... All hand painted with those crappy Testor's small square bottled enamels ;-)

These were all done between 22 and 18 years ago ... my first model ever is that green camo'd F-16... I was in grade 8 at the time ;-)

However, I must admit I did complete 2 models about 8-10 years ago but they were armor...

http://s98.photobucket.com/albums/l249/lgl...Tamiya%20Tiger/

and just prior to that one

http://s98.photobucket.com/albums/l249/lgl...miya%20Hanomag/

I actually went out and bought an airbrush and used Citadel paints on both those kits... the Hanomag was an experiment in getting back into the hobby... the Tiger turned out quite well...

Yup... first aircraft model in almost 20 years... but I must admit before making the plunged I must have read every article on this site and read hundereds of posts since I wanted to do it just right :-)

Best,

-Greg

Greg,

I am a relatively new model builder. I have built some in the past but when I was younger and impatient and just threw them together. I was wondering if you have any tips you could give me as a novice to help turn my model into a masterpiece like yours. Any help from anyone else reading this would be greatly appreciated too. I am particularly interested in your panel line technique. That was always the hardest thing for me to attempt. Thanks in advance for your help, tips, and knowledge.

Welcome to the dark side of modeling Jason...

I spend more time on here than in the Garage working on my kits since I found this place...

Best place for questions besides the In Progress section is the Tools and Tips Section.

You did a great job but dude you have your white in your intakes too much. 6 scale feet in the color of the outside of the aircraft is on the insides other wise I will give you a 10 for sure.
