How many hours does it take you to finish a kit

Recommended Posts

In FSM reviews the authors usually finish up with a statement indicating that it took them x amount of hours to finish a build. I began to think what my average build time comes out to, and I came up with a figure of 30-40 hours. I'm curious how that compares to others builders here.

This of course pertains to those modelers who actually finish things. ^_^

Are you including drying time in that figure?

Excluding waiting for things to dry, I'd say that on average, I probably spend about the same as you, apart from the quick builds I do for the boys ceiling, which are prone to being removed and played with.

Depending on my enthusiasm, that 30 ish hours might be spread over a weekend or a year ;)

Depends on the kit. I know I can do a 1/48 Phantom in ten. Paint and decals included, minus drying time. Tomcats I would guess maybe 20-30.

I did a Hasegawa 1/48 Tomcat in 3 days for a challenge Group build a couple years ago. Turned out pretty good.

Depends on the kit and scale.

I built a 1:72 scale Arrow in about 10 hours. My 1:32 F-86's and CF-104's are probably about 50 hours. My 1:32 scale CF-18 and F-14 are easily well over 200.

Looks like I need to get my finger out and make some progress.

On the "started not finished" list I have:

Monogram P 51 - "Blondie" - 4 years

Monogram P 47 - 20 years

I did finish a 1/24 Triumph TR7 rally car recently that I started about 30 years ago !!!

Can anyone beat that?

LOL my 10 hours would be spread over 10 years....

And that is why all those kits I picked up for you today are asking to stay at my house........So they will be built before their molecules break down.

If I kept track of the hours I put into my current 1:48 F-14A in the past 6 months, I would be fitted into a straight jacket and hauled off to a nuthouse immediately  I probably have as many, if not more hours into this build than I have accumulated work hours this year.... Yes, it is true, I have no life :crying2:

To those guys who take years, decades, whatever to finish. Is it simply due to a lack of time, or do you have some secret meticulousness that makes your models awesome?

I ask because I find that after my 30-40 hour average (spread out over anything ranging from two weeks to several months), my builds end up being only ok. I don't think I have a single finished model that doesn't have some lamely hidden dork-up or two on it.

I think I'd like to sit side by side with some master modeler and build the same kit, and follow the master step by step. And if that means spending two weeks masking a missile for painting than so be it.

Somebody should produce a series of videos like that.

Lack of time and life gets in the way..... But I do loose interest when I come across a problem I can't fix, model goes to the shelf. Right now I am working on a 1/144th scale Avro Arrow..... so much detail for a model and it was in resin..... pressure to build for someone else also adds so this project has taken me some time and a lot of beers. First real total resin kit too so I don't want to F!@# it up.
