New-tool 1/72 F-102 from Meng

Recommended Posts

The review at Hyperscale looks pretty good.

Thanks for the link Kursad! My kit is on its way here, and I can't wait to get going on it! Did you ever figure out if you were going to be able to downsize your Deuce sheet to 72nd scale? That would kick *** ;0) Fred K.

Compared to the Hasegawa aftermarket ones, the AIM-4s are a step forward in some areas (wing leading edge shape, for instance) and backwards in others (noses, and the unfortunate decision to fill in half of the area between the moving tails and the delta wings). See photos of the real thing here.

The plane looks pretty good, although I'll let the experts do the panel-line by panel-line critique as time goes on.

Nice. By the look of it both natural metal and SEA schemes are included?

FS 16473 and camo. No in-service F-102 ever flew in natural metal that I've ever seen. A few were painted silver, but the vast majority spent their entire lives in FS 16473.

Got my 2 today, arrived home from shopping and celebrated this really nice kit with 2 fingers of the new (also) Dark Horse whiskey!

I have to agree with the HS review the kit looks great!! It's good to see we already have some super decals coming along, got a feeling I will have to buy some more 16473 paint and 102 kits!!

If your interested in ANG F-102s almost all of them are in the works at Draw Decals. (www.drawdecals.com)

The first sheet features Louisiana, Florida, Tennessee and South Carolina and is currently available. The second sheet has Northwest ANG birds. Montana, Idaho, Washington and North Dakota. That too is available. Sheets three, four and five will be available shortly. Sheet three has California, Hawaii, Arizona and Oregon. Sheet four is Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York and Vermont, and sheet five is Wisconsin,Minnesota, South Dakota and Texas.

These sheets cover almost all the ANG F-102 squadrons. California and Texas both had two squadrons and we covered the more colorful of each. Maine operated only one squadron for a very brief period and they had no significant markings.

If you want 48th scale, send Greg a note requesting that and he will print them for you.

Mine arrived yesterday, and I love it! I second the call for a F-106!

On a slightly related note - I must confess I like the box as well. It's a lid and tray (always good!, even if the cardboard is on the thinner side), and I love the matte effect of the cardboard. I will be buying a case XX as well, when they pop it out :)

Norm - are the Draw sheets being silkscreen printed, or are they the normal Draw Alps type print on demand decals??

No, they are printed on a 21st Century state of the art commercial grade printer. They use the same decal paper that Microscale and almost all other decal manufacturers do, and they are comparable in quality to silkscreen printed decals. The advantage of these decals is there is never a registration problem, and limited interest subjects can be offered at reasonable prices

Got my new F-102 kit today and it looks fantastic in the box! I really don't need to start another kit right now as I have several others on the bench but, I might not be able to wait :)

I do hope a 1/72 F-106 is next from Meng.

Hi,

Mine is on my way - having been ordered from LM like 2 weeks ago.

From the information I got over that post I also ordered all 3 available decal sheets from DRAW decals (I was more used to ordering nice airliners decals from them) and I will order their 2 other sheets when available.

Now I expect an F-102 case XX wing (don't know what liveries would apply but I am sure decal designers will provide) and of course an F-106 too - and yes I'll also take a single seater F-101 if she ever shows.

Meng (never knew of that brand before - it will be my first kit from them) really fills a gap here. I had been hoping for a Convair Delta fighters replacement for the Hasegawa models for years. My real expectations date back when Revellogram downsized some of their 1/48th scale models (F-4, F-101B, F-89..) and I would have thought F-102 and F-106 were next on the list. Unfortunately that never came true. That is sometime strange how established mainstream model brands miss what I would think are opportunities.

OK for Meng then. Now some other important aircraft would also need a 1/72nd scale treatment : as said F-102 case XX, F-106, F-101A/C plus F-84F, P-47N, F4U-4, NA FJ Fury series to name only aircraft from the mid/late forties to early sixties... Meng if you hear me, set the trend!!

Cheers

Eric B.

If you ask me, the draw decal has them mixed on their sheet. The Pennsylvania ANG option is iirc a XX example.

You have to go from the serial 56-1317 which has been the first XX equiped dagger.

so for their decals: option 2 and 4 from the 1st sheet, 1 and 2 from the second sheet, again 2 and 4 for the 3rd and 4th sheet are XX aircraft.

For the TF-102s the first XX aircraft was the 56-2317.

Greetings

I understand how the printing works. I've not had any luck getting them to conform to compound curves due to the stiffness and thickness of the UV cured inks. Other people have reported the same thing.

Case X wings have the wingtip going flat out. nearly like the raked wingtips on modern Boeing airliners (f.e. 777-300's). And the Case XX wings have the curve from the wing from wingroot to tip. It looks actually like a scaled down B-58 wing.

Greetings!
