My models on display at Vermont ANG!!!

Recommended Posts

A few years ago some might remember the series here on ARC I did of modelling the complete history of the Vermont ANG, 14 planes from the P-47 through the F-35 today.  Decals did not exist for most of the planes, and no kit existed of the EB-57.

Last October I was welcomed at the VT ANG in my birth city of Burlington, VT (I am in Tucson AZ now).  The Wing Commander welcomed me as I donated my entire 14 model collection to the unit, and I was thrilled to be taken right to the edge of the runway while the F-35's were taking off.

This week I received photos of the GORGEOUS display case that was constructed for my models, from Vermont maple wood.  I am absolutely stunned and honored.  I was a bit heartbroken to lose the models, but what better place for them to be than at the actual unit??

Anyway.  Here are the photos they sent.  Notice perched high up are the P-47 and the F-35 together, the first and the last (so far).

Okay, so, your models have now 'flown the nest' and will be living their own independent unseen lives, but, hey, at least they weren't merely set loose in the world without adult supervision. 😁

And, man, that is a nice display case they built. 👍

What an honor!

My GP is the Flight Surgeon for the SC ANG and gets back seat time in a D model F-16.  I built him the plane he flies in.  He keeps it in his office but talked about putting it in the Officers Club on base.

But I know the feeling.  It was tough to let it go after all that work.

Excellent! It's great when models end up in an appropriate setting, and they've certainly done you proud with that very impressive display cabinet...

....I worked at RAF Mildenhall when the 100th ARW became the 'host' unit there, and the commander of the new Wing was very keen to honour the past history of the 'Bloody Hundredth' and the Eighth Air Force in general - during the latter half of 1992, I had a series of articles published in Scale Models magazine celebrating the "50th Anniversary of the USAAF in Britain", which someone made the Wing Commander aware of...

....we had a couple of largely-empty display cases in the Officer's Club bar area, into which, at the Colonel's behest, my models from the articles were placed, with a backdrop that I put together comprising some facsimile wartime newspaper front pages, an original copy of 'Target Germany', and a few patches...

....it was not only gratifying to see people stop to look at the display, but when someone - especially a veteran - made a comment or asked something about it, I had the added benefit of being able to tell them that the models were my handiwork! For some strange reason, I never took any photos of the display, but still have, 30 years on, a handful of the models themselves, as I retrieved them all when I left...

Very, very cool!  Congratulations!  I am lucky enough  to have several models displayed at thhe Ft. Stewart training facility, along with  many, many other builders, but it really feels wonderful to have your work appreciated to that degree.  Great  job!
